Chicano Tattoo Style
Stewart Robson and 4 others reacted to Tim Hendricks for a topic
I started with 'homemade machines' and sharpening my needles on matchbooks. All I knew at the time was single needle and black ink, I was totally clueless to anything else. When I met real tattooers and learned to make real needles I was instantly hooked, there was no turning back. I rarely use single needle these days, I want my tattoos to last as long the person I make them on, but I am very proud to know how to wield a single needle when need be. I believe Chicano style comes purely from where you came from as a tattooer and how you learned. Some try and copy it, some actually do an amazing job at creating it as well, but in my opinion the only people who can tattoo that true Chicano style are the people who lived it. ps - Ben Grillo tattooed my foot yesterday, he busted out the single needle, ouch.5 points -
I am never too experienced to learn something new, and always humble enough to ask a friend/co-worker what they are doing when they do it better than me. A student for life.4 points

@Kev I agree I also would like to see the dehumanisation aspect and how different sets of ideologies play out in the fight for survival. Would you value the life of your fellow man when he could hinder your own survival? How many packs of young capable men would be raping and pillaging weaker camps of survivors? I think season 3 could be awesome if they dwelved into some of these scenarios and introduced a different group or 2.1 point -

I feel like the writers are missing out on some interesting opportunities to show how people deal with trauma differently. There's this overall theme of fight or flight, but all the characters seem to either fall on the gungho Shane side or the orderly Rick side. I think that's why Daryl is so interesting to me, but I definitely think they could go to further extremes with that.1 point -
yup friday at 1. no idea what im getting. going to show up early and just pick something off the wall. i will post pics for sure1 point

I mean I knew either Shane or Rick was gonna go at some point. I was still surprised though when it did happen. I'm looking forward to the next episode.1 point

The race to get covered vs the desire to still be able to get tattooed.
Dan S reacted to posterboy7596 for a topic
My experience has kind of worked itself out organically. The first about 5 years I was getting tattooed, for one reason or another, it was about once a year that I got tattooed(started at 21). I didn't even realize it was working about that way until about a year ago. When I realized it I thought it's a pretty good pace. My tattoos average about 36" sq so I figure that gives me a decent amount of time to keep getting tattooed. I have to admit that my last 2 were only 6 months apart, but once I get my right arm and my chest finished I think I'll be able to slow back down...maybe ;-)1 point -

because I worked for GTC in Modesto for yrs it is part of my lexicon, and I do feel like I ''get it ''having grew up with many Chicans in the suburbs of the East Bay ,Nor Cal,So I feel like It being strictly So Cal is not true. Charlie left ELA in 85'. To quote Tim...''that fish has been fileted''.Do to the internet and media everyone ,now, can pretend to be part of it. Even in south Alabama they like my ''California style'' lettering. Not because I imitate, But because its part of who I am. although BJ's books are beautiful and helpful to the masses, that's not where'' I'' got It....heck I did Scott S's belly rocker 20yrs ago...''Loco Amor'' .Scott and them at American Graffiti used to ask me how and what spanish words were spelt and meant...hehehe...another Huero..Soy Como Soy.1 point -

Pick an artist you like and go talk to them.........then save up the money you need to get done what you want done! At least you won't be floored now when you find out you probably won't get it covered up for $200 and why consider building around a tattoo you already are thinking you want covered? Like I said....go talk with someone....you aren't wasting their time if you are serious about getting tattooed by them! :)1 point -
I agree on the staleness of the farm, but did you see the last one? Spoiler alert, where Rick kills Shane? In the previews there is going to be a stand-off with a shit-ton of walkers! This last part of the season has been edgy....1 point

I don't plan on having a lot of tattoos, but I'd like to have one really nice, unique piece. The ones I have are pretty tame. I think I can just add and eagle or a panther to the one on my shoulder and have something really cool.1 point

From what I understand, the downstroke should always be the heavier side - such as the right leg of the A, the middle stroke of the N, The left middle and final stroke of the M, and so on. These three letters are the ones I see backwards most often. This is what we are talking about, right?1 point -

who: Ryan George @ Almost Famous Tattoos - Tattoo & Piercing - Miami, FL | Facebook what: Oni Head when: a few months back, maybe November 2011 why: I gave my friend Steven Vanni a ride to almost famous because he had an appointment with Greg Christian who was in town. I walked into Ryan George getting tattooed by Greg Christian. I had some serious small talk with Ryan, Showed him the machine I bought from my mentor. So stoked on catching a glimpse of a great tattooer tattooing a bad ass design on another great tattooer. I asked Ryan if I could schedule an appointment.1 point -

Shopping on price is a massive mistake IMHO. Tattooing is like anything else you buy and quality comes at a price. My advice for what its worth. Look at the gallery, there's some great tattoos on there. Find an idea or design you like. Find a good artist. Im sure there are some great tattoo shops in San Diego (I'm from the UK so I can't recomend any). Get a quote pay a deposit and set a date. If you need to save some money set a date months away and start saving.1 point -

Scrappy doesn't do single needle tattoos. There are lots of newer tattooers carrying on what the aforementioned tattooers started. Pint and chuey q, Placaso, drew flores, Jose l, jun cha, ruger, chente, chuco, andrew farnsley, Tattoo tony, Mexican tattoo family, Steve soto, tattoo Louie, big Gus, el bros Mendoza, Antonio m, kiki platas, Dave Sanchez, even kat von d. Grillo and Hendricks do it good too but they aren't married to it. The thing with these tattoos is it can look good even when it's bad. The tradition is that it's handpoked or done with homemade machines, so even when you see people with rough looking stuff, it still looks great. You don't find a lot of people outside of southern California that do it right, and while it's a style most associated with inner city Los Angeles, the people that do it the best are in orange county, riverside, inland empire, etc. There are some shops that specialize in this stuff, under the gun, tattooland, oc ink house, Por vida, lowrider, rubes, shamrock, the Slauson swap meet ha ha. But these are just tattooers known by the general public or people who know about tats. Every hood in califas has a few local people working out of their house or in small little shops or swap meet spots that get it in.1 point -

I know exactly what you mean. Isn't it crazy how "covered" you look in the mirror at first? Then, after a few months, you don't really notice anything but the blank spots.1 point

My dislike of Shane is also growing with each episode. I've also fully turned around from my initial feelings about the show.1 point
-
Yeah, I've been watching it. I have to say, if i hadn't seen season 1 and came into this season, I wouldn't understand what the big deal was. Waaay too much arguing about what they should do and very little action. How many times an episode does Shane say "Let me ask you something..."? I'd be like "Asshole, all you do is ask questions and then talk about how you're the only one that does things. If by doing things you mean screwing your friend's wife, killing off an innocent stranger, and traumatizing that's strangers family by shooting all their zombie relatives, then yes, you do things. Now go do your thing out there away from the rest of us." But that's me.1 point

he most definitely was not a banker... i know he moved furniture for a few different places, and built barns, worked in a lumber yard, and worked in his brother's cabinet shop after we moved out into the country. the details some of his arm tattoos have left is surprising based on all the years of outdoor construction work. on a side note, he was 23 when he started going to Charlie. as for being awesome, both of my parents are pretty rad. also had them dig out a frame with Charlie's old business card and care instructions. the blue card and "Keep the world artful" bits are from my mom's brother's time in California, and the card for "Sully's" was the aforementioned garden shed shop.1 point -

in early 1983, my dad walked into Charlie's shop, watched him tattoo for two days straight, then started dropping money on tattoos over 10 days. in that time, Charlie did his hands, added the dozen roses around the girl on his right arm and clouds around the eagle on his left arm, and tattooed almost his whole chest, except for the wizard/castle, dragon, and lettering on his stomach. in 1984, he went back and had the dragon outlined, the peace pipe on his forearm, and the text inside his forearm. around that time, he had met my mother, and converted her from house tattoos. her first was a Van Halen logo with a guitar string/casette motor machine. the unicorn on her forearm is hers. of the tattoos i've mentioned, none have been retouched since Charlie did them almost 30 years ago, except shading in the dragon and the clouds around the eagle. Nick Cartwright did a tattoo on my mom's other forearm which is currently being covered in a Koi/chrysanthemum sleeve by my boss, Josh Cruse. the butterfly girl in the midst of the dozen roses was done by a guy named O'Sullivan, who apparently had a fully functional, immaculate shop set up in a garden shed. the castle/wizard and shading for the dragon were done later by a guy named Richard "Critter" Trukken, who also did all of my dad's legs, back, both sets of ribs, and finished out what's on his arms. he also redid the clouds Charlie did on his left arm (hence the lack of closer photos of it). at some point, if he feels like it, i'll get some photos of his other tattoos, and possibly some stories. having been fairly entrenched in the tattoo world of the late '80s and early '90s in Kansas, there's a fair few of them. side note... excuse the scratches on his hands... new, fairly violent kitten in the house.1 point -

Its tattooing, no matter how mainstream it gets someone things you look bad just for doing any tattoo. This is a non-issue....shes an adult, she wanted it move on.
