  1. Been getting some little tattoos and filler done by my buddy Ashley Howell. Drawing stuff on me and just going for it. He did some really cool purple smoke behind some black and grey stuff I have that really makes it pop. It's really hard to get a picture of some of the stuff he has done, but will try to post a few more.

@hgiles did the artist who did your right arm advise you that he was not the best in class for your idea? If a customer goes into Burger king does the employee tell them there is a better burger joint across the street? Art is so subjective and most including myself will be very naive about what they are looking at. As someone providing a subjective service(which is usually a collaboration of 2 if not more minds) I would feel compelled to put forward my best efforts , without turning away business. Its part of the consumers responsibility to know what he is in market for. If I sell mid level cars and i have a customer that wants one of them i dont reiterate that its not as good as X brand. I assume that the guy looking at my ford taurus is not in the market for a mercedes benz.

Im one of the most self criticle people I know. I know I suck. And I dont think going to get a tattoo is anything like going to a doctor.

@hgiles I am not speaking for shannon, just my 2 cents on your post. If I was a tattoer especially in a street shop I would do my best to give the best tattoo I can but would never turn away a request. I may try to lead them down a more doable road but the customer came to me for service and I am going to get it done. If customer was interested in specialized custom work he would have researched and 1. not be in my street shop or 2. he looked around a bit and chose me. Most people who get tattooed decide they want one and go to the nearest shop or a shop their buddy got tattooed at and go make an appt. Either way I run a business and have to make tattoos to live.

    Dan Higgs

I personally don't think everything Dan Higgs did was perfect and I think Dan even hated the big deal that was made about him.....at least that's what I walked away with from the convo I had with Eddie! Also the tattoos he did on eddies I saw have held up well and do look amazing....light makes dark....dark makes light...I do wish I had added him while I had the chance! Mike Wilson is definitely on my list of people to add to my collection but I personally figure the best tattooer in the world is probably some guy in a street shop somewhere.....a guy who none of us have even heard of....who pounds out solid tattoos day after day and could care less if anyone has ever heard of him because he loves what he's doing and could care less if his peers liked what he was doing or not! I love well done face tattoos and have thought about getting one at some point once I decide what I want.....and if everyone thinks I am dumb for it I could care less! In fact my dragon tattoo being done on the side of my head (at the end of the month) may actually wrap around the front of my ear onto my face And....I don't like any of the tattoo shows....no matter who is on the show! It might make them a little more tolerable to watch but I still would prefer not see any tattooing on TV......but who am I to tell someone not to take the money they get offered to be on those shows! I learned what i know from spending my hard earned money in tattoo shops and from friends who trust me with the info they have told me....they know I won't talk/share the info with anyone but them! I have learned nothing from any of the shows I have seen and usually turn them off in disgust! I know you were being general and not specifically talking about my post but I thought I would at least throw out how I feel on the subjects you addressed! These are just my opinions of course....... And I totally get what you are saying too! But.....i do enjoy coming here and seeing others opinions on the subjects that are addressed and voicing my thoughts! I am very interested in the community even though i don't tattoo and here i can be a small part of it! :)

  17. In 2008, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco invited Horitaka of State of Grace to participate in their MATCHA series. Horitaka not only gave a lecture on Japanese tattooing--he also tattooed a client in the museum, as did Horitomo, Horiyuki (aka Jill Bonny), Colin Kenji and Shige (who was also accompanied by one of his clients). Horitomo put in a few hours on my arm, then worked on Khalil Rintye's ribs for a while. It was a very odd experience. I've been tattooed at conventions, but this was very different. At conventions, most of the attendees are tattooed. At the museum, that was not the case; tons of people were coming up and asking me all kinds of questions. (If only I'd brought earbuds--plugged into nothing--I could've played it off like I couldn't hear them.) In the end, I was happy to participate. Until last week, I never knew there was a video of the event. Check it out: at 3:40, you can see me and my buddy Clem comparing open spots on our legs. Clem's the guy with the huuuuuuge Jeff Zuck panther on his back (as well as lots of other awesome stuff). But my favorite thing about this is that the top youtube comment says, "0:59 is that Ami James?" :D

if it was anything like going to a doctor, i'd gladly accept $60 to tell you to see my specialist buddy and then also gladly accept another $60 to have you come back and see me to tell me how the visit with my specialist buddy went. or really what would be great is if we could get someone else involved like a large corporate insurance group and you can make regular payments to them of say $250. then come see me, i'll take $15 from you and then i'll send a bill to the insurance group for $100. then you can see my buddy and come back and give me another $15 and then i'll send another bill for $100 out and we'll all feel better about the situation since you only had to pay me $30 to not really do anything other than have a little chat. i'll actually come out ahead on the money side. so it's kinda nothing like going to the doctor. not to be inflammatory, just an observation as far as being treated like cattle, i agree but the whole premise of this show is designed for sheep and the help mold new sheep for the herd.

you are not the average walk in. My whole point was about how ''Ink Masters'' seems to try and play a double standard.Taking some ''specialists'' and trying to see how diverse they are. It doesnt make sense to me. A friend of a co tattooer of mine is/was on this show, he specializes in Jap/style, he seemed uncomfortable with some of the projects. Its shameful, I would not like to be on any of these shows, I would come off an idiot. although I feel proficent at a few different crafts displayed on this show, TV seems to be more about humiliation , rather than uplifting the craft. Lets face it, Just because your a rockstar, it doesnt make your opinions valid. All these reality shows are about conflict more than anything. I knew a guy that was on ,I think the first ''Real World''. He was handpicked by his uncle an MTV producer. he was picked because he liked to rub people wrong, just to see if he could get under thier skin. Its TV, not reality. Your average tattoo customer , doesnt care about any of this, blogs,TV, any of it. I seem to do more cover ups than ever, lots of tattooers wont even try.So, I try and help people with thier tattoo problems daily. Its not easy. Its hard. But, I try and do the best that I can. To quote my friend,S.Sylvia....''It beats cuttin' pork chops''. Because I care about what I do, I could make a better living doing another trade Im qualified to do, But I would rather push myself personally, Doing something I care about. Doing the best that I can , while Im here.

I very much understand the creative process, Shannon Shirley. You dont know me. And more than that, I know how to do business with integrity. It's really no different than going to my doctor. He should be well-aware of his limitations and have the decency to refer me to a specialist when he's in over his head. Based on your response (and your pics), I suspect youre one of those primadonna tattooist that I'd not want any work from anyway nor would I from any tattooer that doesnt understand my perspective as a collector and consumer. Moreover, the rudeness of your comments shouldn't be nearly as concerning to you as their divisiveness and the manifestation of your ignorance.

  34. he most definitely was not a banker... i know he moved furniture for a few different places, and built barns, worked in a lumber yard, and worked in his brother's cabinet shop after we moved out into the country. the details some of his arm tattoos have left is surprising based on all the years of outdoor construction work. on a side note, he was 23 when he started going to Charlie. as for being awesome, both of my parents are pretty rad. also had them dig out a frame with Charlie's old business card and care instructions. the blue card and "Keep the world artful" bits are from my mom's brother's time in California, and the card for "Sully's" was the aforementioned garden shed shop.
    1 point
  35. in early 1983, my dad walked into Charlie's shop, watched him tattoo for two days straight, then started dropping money on tattoos over 10 days. in that time, Charlie did his hands, added the dozen roses around the girl on his right arm and clouds around the eagle on his left arm, and tattooed almost his whole chest, except for the wizard/castle, dragon, and lettering on his stomach. in 1984, he went back and had the dragon outlined, the peace pipe on his forearm, and the text inside his forearm. around that time, he had met my mother, and converted her from house tattoos. her first was a Van Halen logo with a guitar string/casette motor machine. the unicorn on her forearm is hers. of the tattoos i've mentioned, none have been retouched since Charlie did them almost 30 years ago, except shading in the dragon and the clouds around the eagle. Nick Cartwright did a tattoo on my mom's other forearm which is currently being covered in a Koi/chrysanthemum sleeve by my boss, Josh Cruse. the butterfly girl in the midst of the dozen roses was done by a guy named O'Sullivan, who apparently had a fully functional, immaculate shop set up in a garden shed. the castle/wizard and shading for the dragon were done later by a guy named Richard "Critter" Trukken, who also did all of my dad's legs, back, both sets of ribs, and finished out what's on his arms. he also redid the clouds Charlie did on his left arm (hence the lack of closer photos of it). at some point, if he feels like it, i'll get some photos of his other tattoos, and possibly some stories. having been fairly entrenched in the tattoo world of the late '80s and early '90s in Kansas, there's a fair few of them. side note... excuse the scratches on his hands... new, fairly violent kitten in the house.

  40. Reading his responses I was almost compelled to send him an 'customer service 101' primer. here's a tip: Eat the shit sandwich. "Andy, I'm so sorry this has taken so long and I'd be happy to refund you and even send you a machine on me to make up for your terrible experience." Then refund. Then ship the comp'd machine. KISS A LITTLE ASS. There are tons of people making machines; you have options out the ass when you're buying a new one. So when someone has a bad experience... hustle. Kiss that ass. Make it right. People never learn. Good luck with the refund, Duder.

  43. I joined just to contribute a photo of my neck-to-knees backpiece done by Dan Wysuph at Samuel O'Reilly's in Santa Cruz, CA. My username here was derived from the nickname I earned by spending so much time naked in their shop. I think Adam Barton originally coined it and everyone there calls me that to this day. It took 20 three-hour sessions over the course of almost 2 years. To answer an earlier question regarding healing, it is not sitting on fresh tattoo that hurts, it's sitting down or standing up, or just about any other activity that makes your clothes (or sheets!) rub the area. Also, having a wife to help with the cleaning aspect of the healing process was a huge help. -1891-

Dear Mr. or Mrs. Juggalove, I was a proud member of your dating site for some amount of time until I tried to log in this morning and found my account was suddenly deleted. Honestly I am at a loss for words. Countless hours of hard work and dedication went into the creation of that page and I now have nothing to show for it. In addition, I had spoken to many "fine ass bitches" and had received not four but a total of five numbers from some sweet ass hoes. I hope you realize that you have managed to ruin my virtual dating life. I have had to move my online profile to OKCUPID. You know how fucking degrading that shit is? Honestly, all the fucking girls are "24 year old bisexuals who are in a god damn transitional phase" All I wanted was to meet a nice down to earth hoe that I could one day marry and have hella little juggalo babies with. Now I'm going to be alone for the rest of my god damn life sad masturbating to videos from this years Gathering. With Regards, Daniel Costello Sent at 10:00 this morning. Ill let yall know how this goes.,
