painting Don Nolan did to put on his back, but the tattoo never happened. at some point in time some moisture got in there and fucked it up a little. still ill. I have a better pic of it but this should suffice for now.

the only thing that has come to light for me is , that some," great" tattoo artists aren't very diverse. And that pressure will never produce your best work.

  9. i'll throw this one up here too, if not only for the reason of having not one but two of a dudes tattoo's in this month, that has almost no internet presence at all and likes it that way. another from Jaie Devore at perfection in austin.

  10. Well done @Rebushido, superb tattoo. I would have voted for you if my missus @Jade1959 hadn't put in an entry. I've become rather attatched to my testicles and want it to stay that way. :)

  11. Mark Mahoney, Corey Miller, Andrew Farnsley, Sapo, Merdock, Big Ed, Rob Dringenberg, Creeper, Pint, Antonio Mejia, Chuey Quintanar, Danny Romo, Small Paul Stottler, they can all do top notch single needle black n grey tattooing as well as those mentioned already.

  12. Chad Koeplinger. He was cool about it and actually got a nice, clean, accurate outline despite my writhing in pain the whole time! Good thing he tattoos very fast, otherwise itd take me ten sittings to finish! Everyone in that shop tattoos fast. They were knocking out tattoos faster than episodes of Miami Ink. ;)

ive been tattooing for about 15 years now and i can tell you tattooing in nyc was seemingly more diverse than it is now. i remember never being allowed to turn down a tattoo cause we you didnt work in that style. my mentor instilled in me the fact that i should always be well rounded. the only thing i was allowed to turn down was portraits and at that time i would just turn them over to him. as an artist i think it great to have a style but as a technician i know one style doesnt teach you everything there is to know about tattooing. just my two cents of cours

A thousand times yes. When I was getting those tigers on my ribs, I left the station soaked in sweat. That was far and away the worst I've experienced yet. Thankfully, Tim Lehi is super fast (and broke it up over 4 sessions). My longest rib session was 2.5 hours, but they were the longest 2.5 hours of my life.

  23. @gougetheeyes - right hand healed up just fine despite the cracking- very minimal fallout going thru the same thing with my left right now though, I dunno why I was as careful as I can be but I'm sure it will be fine

  24. Idk those rough tattoos look like they hurt way more than any punch I would deal out to a friend.

  25. I can't imagine how the ribs feel. Back in 90 or 91 I was getting my first Tattoo at Divinci in Wantaugh, NY. In the room next to me Frank Romano was working on a large demon on the side of this guy. All I heard was the guy screaming and the buzz of the needle. Frank kept telling him to relax, after 5 minutes the dude passed out!!! Every since then I have feared getting the rib area done.....

  26. I got tattoed today (rib panel) and I feel like shit because I tapped out on him when he was obviously into the piece and wanted to do more. Honest, its my first time I ever tapped out on anyone. And to add insult to injury, it was the shortest session Ive ever had. I feel like a three pump chump. But damn, it was brutal! From the first line I was saying to myself "what the hell were you thinking!" What we got done looks awesome though!

  27. I personally gave up the nice talk. I got tired since a lot of people I know started to get shit and I said...oooo nice. Now I yell at them but they dont listen. I think we need to start reinforcing what a good and bad tattoo look like.

  28. It's not like you have to go to failure on the GVT. We aren't talking Crossfit here in the realm of forced reps and do it until the clock runs out. I find that doing a compound move with light weight (roughly 65% 1RM) and high volume will help you assess and fix your weak areas. If you have a weak lower back, the volume of squatting by itself will fix it. In a 10x10, the weight should be light enough that you shouldn't have to worry about injury unless you're just doing it wrong. To exaggerate a little to further my point, you should be able to do a 20x20 injury free as long as the weight is properly set and proper technique is used. In my realm of lifting, I finally hit a huge PR on dead lift this week that I've been aiming for. Since numbers on the internet don't matter, let's just say it was 8421lbs. Gotta love getting consistently stronger. If I keep up this rate, I might dabble in strongman next year.

Some guy named @Scott Sylvia put a cobra over my elbow. It swelled up nicely: But healed perfectly: Every tattooer who sees it is amazed that he got that red in like that in one pass.

  33. theres gonna be a film and book coming out soon ,on this subject. Charlie calls them '' 2 crackers in Beantown'' but thats not the real title. the movie is about Chican Art with GTC,Jack Rudy,Negrete,Cheech Marin and Danny Trejo, Im told. the book is pretty much Charlies story and is supposed to be available thru Henk.
    1 point
  34. Charlie and Jack pretty much pioneered the style ,in a shop, that is. I worked for GTC for almost 10 yrs. I would have to say those tattoos are nice, but, done in a very traditional style. We used single needles for yrs, but I never touch em nowdays. much of the premades are plenty tight enough. you left out a lot of important cats, Freddy Negrete, Flame, Mike Brown,GTC, These are some of the founding fathers.

i would say they used the same reference. did a bunch of tracing and went for it. but if you notice shane moved the hand and put a mic in it. and if you further notice. the indentation from where that hand was is still in the dress.

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

GREAT experience getting tattooed by Jaie Devore at Perfection yesterday. I surrounded by so many cool pieces of art and history- having an original dragon from Ed Hardy's Dragon scroll project stare down at me while I was getting tattooed, not to mention all the other various pieces of art from various heavy hitters was something else. I also had the immense pleasure of talking to Bob Moreau for most of the tattoo as well, sharing stories about the old days, books, traveling, etc. Well worth the price of admission. Jaie knocked the concept out of the park:

  40. Being young and being introduced to all these great artists thanks to the interwebs, I battle with the idea of "go go go get covered now" and then the responsible person in me says "no no". I'm glad I haven't rushed anything quite yet though because my list of artists to get tattooed by just keeps increasing and I'd like to have room for them when the time comes. I'd much rather have smaller pieces enthusiasts and tattooers can recognize and appreciate by great artists then being covered just for the sake of being covered

  41. You can pay for tattoos with a credit card now? Hot damn, I'm young but I wanna go back in time. When you had to call people on a landline or write a letter. O well at least here in japan cash is still king.
    1 point
  42. Yeah, I basically did that around that age, though it all wasn't in one shot. Shit, most shops were still all cash only so none of this "credit card sleeve" stuff, which, I have to admit, is pretty fucking appealing even as I'm pushing 30. I started getting tattooed as soon as I turned 18 and thank god I was usually broke. But once I got that itch, I had to scratch it, not because I wanted to roll up my sleeves and try to look cool, just because it was always there and I felt like I had to or I would.. die. Or probably something less dramatic. You're right though, the big downsides are experience -- both in life and much more so in becoming familiar with tattoos -- and since I was so frantic, I kind of blew it some of the placement and composition. Don't regret any of it, but there's certainly something to be said for waiting and planning. But at 18, 19, 23, whenever, "patience" wasn't really part of my vocabulary.

    good client behavior

In Australia, its not common to tip really except maybe in hospitality (In general, most industries have pretty decent minimum wages so its not really needed but appreciated) but beers or `jazz cigarettes` never go astray lol. In Japan they dont really tip either, so I brought the catclaw crew a bunch of wacky australian souveniers and a bottle of Hennesy. (and crushed icees because its to friggin hot here!!)
