Yeah, Scott nailed it--and it only took him an hour. I showed up not knowing what I wanted to jam into that weird space. He said, "We'll figure something out." Right before I walked over to his station, my wife noticed a cobra on some old Lee Roy Minugh flash and said, "Get a cobra!" I love that woman.5 points

Here's where I get flamed... So, no, this isn't an intricate, beautiful piece, but the style and execution were hot stuff in the street-club "Greaser" culture of the late sixties. This one was put on with a sharpened shoe-nail and boiled ink from a BIC whilst in a "youth home" around 1968 or so. I've thought about having it covered or removed, but for some reason, just can't bring myself to do it. It was the third tat I put on myself, the other two are long covered. Oh, and if anyone here is into old watches, let me know-always open to buy/sell/trade for Elgins and other good quality old watches.4 points -

ok here's mine. was easier than i thought to photo my elbow with the help of a mirror and my iPhone. done by Chris David, then of TCB tattoo toronto, now he works in BC i think in victoria somewheres. People are always shocked he did the heart red and that i haven't had it touched up. It looks a little darker in the photo because I used lotion right before it was taken. It could use another pass on the red, it's a little blotchy when I bend my elbow all the way, but it's in there pretty good. looking at these pics makes me realize i need to get some more shit around that thing!2 points -

It's not a drawing contest- it's a tattooing contest----- and a visually attractive and commercially marketable contest as well. I was talking to my husband after watching the result portion of a few of the episodes, and based on the work shown I felt confident that I could "out tattoo" them so to speak. And he pointed out that I would never get chosen for the show because of a number of factors, the number one being that i'm not relevant in today's market. I'm old(er), chubbier and less model like than the participants. These factors may fly with a male contestant or judge, but never a female. There goes my hundred grand ):2 points -

Congrats on the PR! Always feels great, especially when it's a number like that. ;) Anyone else here ever use chains? I first tried them in @Hrubarb's garage and went out a bought a set right away. I really like them for Louie Simmons-style "speed" days. That's what I plan to do tonight: bench with chains and box squats with chains. Trying to add break through some sticking points on those lifts.1 point

It's not like you have to go to failure on the GVT. We aren't talking Crossfit here in the realm of forced reps and do it until the clock runs out. I find that doing a compound move with light weight (roughly 65% 1RM) and high volume will help you assess and fix your weak areas. If you have a weak lower back, the volume of squatting by itself will fix it. In a 10x10, the weight should be light enough that you shouldn't have to worry about injury unless you're just doing it wrong. To exaggerate a little to further my point, you should be able to do a 20x20 injury free as long as the weight is properly set and proper technique is used. In my realm of lifting, I finally hit a huge PR on dead lift this week that I've been aiming for. Since numbers on the internet don't matter, let's just say it was 8421lbs. Gotta love getting consistently stronger. If I keep up this rate, I might dabble in strongman next year.1 point -

@RoryQ, it's always, always better to start too light than to start too heavy! I'll let @kylegrey weigh in here with a much more authoritative voice, but my two cents is that you should squat instead of leg press if at all possible. I got a lot out of a high-rep squat routine, and I'm sure you would, too.1 point

I don't have television for the reason of shows like these. I'm still an apprentice, have been for the past 4 years and I know I may not know a whole hell of a lot yet but I try to read as much as possible, talk with older folks, and find as much as I can. I feel as though shows like this portray tattoo artists as a joke. They over dramatize the industry for ratings and make every viewer an expert on tattoos. I work with great people who've been tattooing for many many years and I respect the hell out of them and to see something that they've worked their whole lives for and that we all love shown as a high school sissy fighting contest I feel saddened. Not to mention that being as how people aren't exactly the smartest these days and no one tries to find anything out for themselves they just listen to the television.. we have a barrage of arrogant asshole customers thinking they know better than us and that everything should only take "15 minutes". This show is just another recycled piece of crap like all the rest, top chef, next top model, etc. My thought is if you don't like whats going on, than turn off the television once ratings go down things go away. Just my two cents. cheers, krista1 point -

I have three dots on my finger! It is partially covered up by my knuckle tattoos but it couldn't fully be covered and I didn't want it to be fully covered! I also just added a much larger one on my right forearm as Dave Kruseman is using it as part of his logo for his new shop (Olde Line Tattoo) and anyone that is part of that "family" is being "given" them! Look at the "I" you can still see it!1 point -

Someone claiming to be Sue created an Etsy profile just to send me a message this morning. It was again going on about the cancer and how hard she's had it and blah blah blah. I replied and told her, don't apologize to me, I'm not a tattooer you ripped off, go talk to them. Re-itterated that I thought it was wrong and suggested if she wants to make a public statement to us (us meaning the LST members who posted in this thread) to do it here and not through my online store. @JAllen is right though, we should all (myself included) maybe focus our mob energy and influence, 'cause it appears we as an online tatto group have one, towards some of the positive things on this site like the amazing interviews and articles Scott and others have posted for us to enjoy.1 point -

I feel like I accomplished something over the last few weeks, everyone I work with has multiple tattoos most done on a whim or just walk-in to a guy that their friend got work done by and get a tattoo. We have a new guy who wants his first tattoo. He wants a dragon and one of my friends who I also work with has a dragon. I could see the young guys wheels turning so I asked him to look at david bruehls or fernandos work at think ink in norman oklahoma before he scheduled somewhere else. He said he liked my bruehl tattoo but he didnt do dragons. I smirked and said does everything you saw look good even if you dont like the image? well yah was his response, I encouraged him to go talk with David at the shop. He now has a tentative start of early april to get his first tattoo with a great artist who will give him a clean tattoo that he will be happy with for ages.1 point -

Waiting lists aren't what I consider. Competent tattoing is. And depending on where you live you can get a badass "walk-in" tattoo. Understanding what makes a good tattooer and a good tattoo is much more important than a waiting list in my determination of who to see. That being said, I would be stoked to be on Valerie's waiting list!1 point -

Are bad tattoos our fault?
Shannon Shirley reacted to hawk for a topic
Here ya go, rough is pretty mild for these two. The back piece owner is very happy so why would I critique? Because I have spent my entire adult life trying to lend credit to the trade and art of tattooing and am qualified to do so but ultimately the meth head who owns this is very happy which illustrates that "tattoos can be as unique as the individual". And this abomination was done by a graduate of the "Tattoo School" in NY that charged more with their 2 weeks experience than I would have with my 32 years of constant study and dedication, and somehow I "needed" to see and comment with "what I thought?" when this guy bounced in to "show and tell", WTF?! The second abomination is on the upper thigh of a lady who was happy with the tattoo but wanted the guns fixed, the skull fixed, the hat fixed, the rose fixed and wanted the lettering to be more legible in the hat....This is to say that the lady was happy with the tattoo but wanted the tattoo totally "redone but better", so the psychology is that the lady didn't want to admit to herself that the tattoo was jacked up, admit she had made a bad decision nor did she wish to divulge who the "tattoo artist" was. Now lets consider that she went to get the brakes fixed on her car and when she left after the payment for the services rendered the brakes didn't work, wouldn't it be proper to warn her friends of the brake shop that did the work? But the accepted norm today seems that people are compelled to defend their actions even if they are wrong and then there are those who live in the bliss of ignorance. This is nothing new, so many times we encounter people asking "what we think" of something that doesn't require much more than a six year old to tell them that it's not "good", in fact a "pleasant reply" would be "If ya have to ask then I don't need to tell ya". So often we see these designs coming to our shops but now they are strolling in from shops that proclaim to be professional and I have to call 'em as I see em' . Often I apologize to them as I feel somewhat sorry for them, short changed by some scammer that is working harder at burning down the overall rep of the trade and art of tattooing. Ultimately, if they are happy with crap then let them sport crap but the general pop needs to get more educated that good tattoos can't be found on craigslist. I know that with some here I'm preaching to the choir but in this day and age when every 29 seconds a kid in a trailer court becomes a tattoo artist and the garden variety customer of theirs is giving referrals to the masses creating the illusion that underground unlicensed tattooing is "better" and that learned professionals tattooing above ground are the scammers is like peddling bad smack on a playground. So to recap, those people who don't see any diff, let them eat cake, and for those who seek honest answers need the advice and opinion of a professional and sometimes blood tests. After 32 years of tattooing I could go on forever with all the stories I could tell of people coming in from shops above ground that were told the redness and granulomas of what was a staph infection "was normal" indicating the tattoo hut was either uneducated or didn't give a dam, this effects the reputation of tattoos and the realm of the professionals whom ultimately become the whipping post's of/for their actions. Sorry for the rant but when the scratchers outnumber the professionals 20 to 1 they can and do create a false representation of true professional tattooing. We all witness daily the faces of those who don't and may never understand anything more of what we are discussing than what they have to pay for "believe" in tiny letters scribbled on their wrist and the truth is in the fact that this will never change and there will always be those whom are very proud to have a Taz waving the rebel flag holding a can of beer with a misspelled name tattooed on their chest at their trailer park bar-b-que. Sorry again for the rant but this thread made me feel like posting.1 point
