That's because your old mate makes his opinions based on the internet and tv shows, not the real world. He obviously has never seen Oliver take walk-ins all day and totally nail every single tattoo drawing, regardless of style in less than 15 minutes. Then execute every tattoo, regardless of style, cleanly, quickly and accurately without rock star attitude. Just to make this clear, Oliver manages to give walk-in customers what they want and make a great tattoo that he can be happy with and other tattooers will appreciate. Think about that for a minute... walk-in customers who don't give a shit who he is... and just want a tattoo they can like.... great tattoos... It's a rare talent among tattooers and even more rare among 'artists' who make tattoos. Making great tattoos, making customers happy and having a great time while being so fucking cool to everyone else in the room and helping tattooers less experienced than him, yeah, fuck that guy. I'd hate for the guy who does my awesome tattoo to have a toothpick, like ewwww, gross, totally not cool.

    Dan Higgs

Last winter i was able to see Dan higgs perform at Robert ryan's studio/apartment in Asbury park. At the time, I was staying at my dad's place in Bradley beach, a town away, so I walked over about a half hour before the show and got there before anyone else had really shown up. I went upstairs and entered this dark apartment illuminated only by candlelight, hazy with incense, decorated with eastern deities and inhabited solely by Bink himself, who was prepping for the show, and three huddled masses sitting in a circle in a shadowy corner, conversing and sharing a joint. I didn't recognize the two facing me, being of the traveller/hippie variety, but I recognized the voice of the bearded, sunglassed man sitting with his back to me as he said "and that's not when I SAW yellow, but I FELT yellow..." I said to myself, "I don't do nearly enough drugs to get this shit", and i went and sat down by myself in the opposite corner. That's my higgs story

Favorite part of the day? Watching "Robare" from NY Ink cutting the line and the door guy shaking his head and putting his hands up, saying, "I don't know who the fuck you are." It was gold, Jerry, gold!!

No. Or if they did, I missed it while being asked 10000 times if I was in line for the 'meet n greet' with Megen Massacre or whoever from NYInked. Let's just repeat that: There was a HUGE line of people waiting to meet a tattooist. At a tattoo convention.

  8. I'll just go ahead and post the link, since I'm sure @Perez is happy to spread the magic. Didn't get to see Polito but what I did get was a little snake from a Lee Roy acetate from Andy Perez. Good times x10: Instagram Also somehow made it through a brutal rib session with Ron "Angel Fingers" Wells, but not quite done yet, so you'll all have to wait for that one.

At the Philly tattoo convention yesterday, they made sure to announce over the PA system that Al Fliction was in the house. All the amazing tattooers there this weekend, and Al gets a shoutout.

  11. Good evening folks, my name's Jesse Fowler, and I'm a tattoo artist currently working in Burlington, Vermont. I'm not exactly a novice, but not yet ready to call myself an old-timer. I am quietly celebrating twenty years of tattooing this summer, with a large portion of that time here in Vermont. I've experienced a wide range of tattoo and work/shop styles over the years, and that has given me a huge range of artistic styles to work in. I don't think I have met a style of ink that I don't enjoy working in, and I probably never will. Black, grey, color, traditional, Japanese, new-school, even "tribal" - they all have a place as long as folks want them in their skin. I have been leaning towards making the work that I do more like a painting than more traditional tattoos, but always remembering to bring the aesthetic of those old pieces along. I want the ink that I give to my clients to be as solid in twenty years as it is the day they leave my shop. Now and then I get to see some of the work that I had done that long ago, and it certainly shows when I was following that rule - and when I wasn't. I love this craft, and I hope to see it at least as healthy and vibrant when my time is done as it was when I entered. I am looking to online community sites such as this one, to find more ways to not only promote and share my work, but also to become more involved in the larger community of artists and collectors - the popularity of tattooing right now poses as much of a threat to our craft as it offers opportunity. I'm looking forward to seeing how this site works, and hopefully connecting with more fellow artists out there. Sincerely, Jesse Fowler Vermont Custom Tattoo - Burlington, Vermont

  13. Funny, too, we did a bunch of filler a while ago and left that spot cause it was just big enough for "something," just in case. And yesterday Perez texted me about three minutes before I popped over to the booth though I hadn't seen the text yet. It fit right in that spot like it was made for it and he used pencil dust for the stencil to boot. And had the exact right amount of paper towels. Not sayin it was fate.. but hey, if the snake fits.

I liked both of those 'pon di Instagram, but I'll like your post here, too. I'm so stoked for you, man. And I can't believe that the stencil fit! I've been thinking about that a lot lately: back in the stencil era, you got what you got, and you got it in that size. Super, super cool.

  47. Um, er, regarding proportionate hydro-propulsion, do you think Nunez is touchy about carp composition because HE did this a few months ago?: Log In | Facebook I'm just glad they didn't get Tim Lehi, Mike Rubendall, Mike Roper, Jason Brooks, Filip Leu, Chris Trevino, and Brian Bruno to compete, with Horiyoshi III judging. Those guys fucking suck.

Thoughts on e2: Ton Jones isn't "heavily tattooed". He's just heavy. My fiancee's 81yo Jewish Bubbe used to have the same sunglasses that Chriss Angel... errr.. Navarro is wearing on the car challenge. Peck calling James "hillbilly" was funny. Al Fliction's glasses are stupid. As stupid as Al Fliction. I want to see Peck and Nunez tattoo a pig in a 32* meat locker, pinstripe a car and braid Navarro's hair to match Al's goatee. I want to eat crawdaddies with James at a hoedown. I can't believe the producers didn't have a backup for psoriasis guy other than two tons of fun. I feel bad for having watched another episode.
