  3. "But at the end of the day, are you really a happier person? Has this tattoo, for instance, caused you to learn something new about yourself? Has it challenged you? Has it led you to self-growth? Nothing comes out of getting a tattoo. You get a tattoo, and that's it. You do something productive, though, and you see results. That's a genuine, satisfying change in life. Not ink." an easy statement to make if you've never gotten tattooed. and i seriously want to know what grandmother is wearing the type of clothing to show off her upper back whilst handing out life lessons to her grandchildren. so is she saying, don't get tattooed and stay classy so you can be a trampy granny? all that being said, this barely passes for the types of crappy current event journals that people had to do in college. i imagine that this gal went to some college to get a journalism degree and this is the fruits of all that hard work and student loans? nice. i started getting tattooed to let people like this know, i do not think the way you do, i do not want to know your opinion. it does not matter. i reject your thoughts, your institutions, your style, your class, and all the constructs of this mindless brainwashed society in which you wish to participate. ftw.

  6. Watch "Stoney Knows How". He talks about the biker flash that he has drawn, his opinions on it, and its meaning. He is not a fan, but he is running a business, and you got to give them what they want. I love the biker flash that he drew, and I will probably get some in the future, but it is easy to drop the swastika out of most of the designs. Personally I am too old to consider shock-value as a reason to do anything. That is for angry young men, and I am an angry old man.

  7. 2012 is the year of the dragon and after spending the Chinese New Year in Asia I thought it would be pretty cool to get a tattoo momento of the trip. I was looking at getting a dragon in the traditional american style but apart from some sailor jerry flash (which is kickass and I'm leaning towards getting) I can't find many other flash references apart from the odd one or two. Can anybody help me out? Sailor Jerry Col Todd

That Lehi painting is so good, think that has sealed my thoughts on what I am going to do with my right side. Always liked Shoki and tiger so maybe I will just get the tiger and oni's,waterfall and skull rocks. http://www.japaneseprints.net/images/jpg2110.jpg

This is part of why I've enjoyed this site so much so far. I absolutely just learned something by being somewhat corrected, and it was done in a wonderfully polite manner. Thanks for the insight Mr. Flores.

  12. A Native American client put it in perspective the other day. She was looking around the shop and stopped at a sheet with some Pacific Northwest Native Designs. I asked her if she was interested in getting that type of tattoo, because I have a lot more reference in the back of that stuff. She replied "Anyone who takes a look at me can tell I'm Indian, I don't need a tattoo to say it, I want to get a Unicorn or a Pegasus, do you have any of those?" I told her we could draw one for her and she said "I've never been in a tattoo shop that didn't have a Pegasus or a unicorn on the wall." Fast forward, she leaves stoked with her bitching new tattoo. First of all I want to know what shops she's been hanging out at, cause I want to see some awesome unicorn flash. Two I guess it makes sense, while lots of people get tattoos to represent their family cultures and background, others are looking to differentiate themselves and possibly even rebel against the common perceptions. I can see how some people could be sensitive towards stuff from their culture, but with all due respect if we all got tattoos based upon exactly who we are, we would all have the same tattoos (or else we would all have to join the navy or somehow turn Japanese). Look at most tattoo designs. So many animals tattoos are loosely based upon what they would look like in the wild, but very few would be a spot on accurate representation of the species nor is it really intended to be, plus I don't think they wear funny hats or smoke cigarettes either. It's tweaking old ideas that generate new ideas and keep old ideas fresh and new.

Stones are excellent, they came in a little drawstring bag that stays in the freezer until needed. Always cold, doesn't dilute the liquor.

  15. I'm going to see Kim Saigh at the end of the month for my biggest tattoo so far, it will also be the first one that I didn't bring a reference, just told her what I wanted knowing she will make it great... Getting excited! It's an early 43rd b-day present to myself.

  16. Pictures would be great to include, but originally wanted to start a conversation about the designs themselves. I love a native lady head simply cause they're pretty but what's the consensus on whipping up random designs that simply look Native American? You can usually find a chief/lady head design on old flash and they've been a staple of "tattoo history" for a long time. It seems like a fine line though; throw a headdress on em, some face paint and a slouchy shirt with some beadwork and there you go. Is there a worry that we're appropriating a culture that remains essentially unrepresented in America? Has anyone with a Native-themed tattoo ever received any feedback from a Native person? How about some of the strictly graphic designs that have been popping up lately? Should I have just not started this thread and leave the whole thing alone? Sort of a big conversation to have but I'd really love to know what you all think.. or if you've even thought about it at all. Also, anyone know Jack Red Cloud's story? I think he's discussed in the McCabe NYC Tattoo book but I leant that out to a friend.

  17. Yeah so her article talking about how everyone took her original one out of context. Bullshit. She's still an idiot who thinks being skinny and wearing cool clothes is gonna make her happy. There's a poll included in the article "has your opinion of Lisa changed after reading this" 90% of people said NO. She claims no one discussed her POV and just insulted her. I'm pretty sure in this thread alone 3-6 people quoted directly from her article with direct responses, that makes me think that a lot of other people probably did too. Shannon's right, her rebuttal should have been called "19 year old runs her mouth". I wish I could walk down the street with her just to prove how many more heads get turned at the sight of my tattooed attractive self then they do at her. Wearing fancy jeans and doing your hair isn't what dudes like (at least not the smart ones who are looking for more sex). What really gets you a man, or a job, or self esteem is being confident in yourself. Maybe your confidence does come from shopping at the mall and getting your nails done. But guess what, a lot of women find confidence in themselves without all those things. Many women find their self confidence through their intelligence, through their family, their job, their education, their art. I'm sure she'd be shocked to hear a lot of women find their confidence through getting tattooed. Or what about a woman like our own board member Deb or Valerie, who are making a living and supporting themselves and in Deb's case her children through tattooing? I'd say it's a fuck of a lot more respectable to be someone like Deb who owns her own business and raised I believe 5 children and has kept up what seems to be an amazing marriage, then to be some bimbo married to a rich guy who spends her days shopping and getting her hair and nails done. Tattooing has supported me and my fiancé, has given me more opportunity to travel, meet new friends, be inspired, sell my artwork and live a happy life. Oh and the fact that she doesn't mention one thing about men getting tattooed...

  18. Well, I live in SF, so every now and then, I see some awesome work. I have a buddy at my gym from Northern Ireland (shouts out to @RoryQ!) with work from Theo Mindell, Jason Kundell, Jason Tyler Grace and lots of other great artists. That's how we met, actually. I asked him who did his work. There's another guy I see with a ton of work from the guys at Seventh Son--really impressive stuff (and he's strong as hell).

    Whiskey Thread

I grew up round Whiskey. I'm Scottish (such a stereotype) and my dad worked in the drinks industry. One of my first ever family holidays was a house swap with the caretaker of the Bowmore distillery on Islay. My favourite is this bad boy: Edradour 2002 Tokaji Matured Whisky - Master of Malt I don't know what it is about the tokaji maturing that makes it quite so glorious, but it's the easiest Whiskey I've ever drank, and one of the few that I wouldn't even consider putting ice or water in. Honestly I'm more of a Dark Rum drinker but I LOVE this whiskey. My dad loves Bowmore, but for special he'll have a Bruichladdich or VERY special a glass of the 1983 Port Ellen that I got mates rates on because my friend's mum bottles it (like I said, grew up round whiskey!) Now I want some whiskey. Is there a rule about not whiskey before noon and at work?

  23. I see what your saying now, I guess it comes down to the context in which you get the tattoo and how the other person perceives it.. As for my own thing, I drew up some silly little one using the Iroquois flag I'll try to post it, as for all the books, Half my bookshelf is martial arts books, the rest is all books on Native Americans.. And I still can't find one for me to use as a base idea. I'll post again later this weekend about my idea as a whole, if you guys don't mind see if I can get some feed back based off my other arm and what I want to do with my "native american arm"

  26. Re: DOMS - I've no doubt Kyle's right that there's an individual element to it. For me I only seem to really get it bad in the lower body - usually if it's following a workout where there was a lot of volume and in particular if it was single leg stuff: Bulgarian split squats, like Hogg mentions, or even moreso if it was lunges for some reason (think Mike Boyle has written about the physiological reason for this and the less commonly-used muscles involved). I know what you mean about lowering yourself onto the toilet, Cork. This must be what it's like to be 80. In gyms here I don't see that many people who are just lifting who have decent tattoos. The BJJ/MMA crowd seem to be more likely to have some decent stuff, particularly japanese-style work, although the preference seems to still be for fairly uninspiring tribal and black work (not exactly Thomas Hooper / Jondix calibre stuff, put it that way). I remember last year in Chicago I did meet one huge bodybuilder who had a cool Hanna Aitchison pin-up on his leg.

Tattoos can change you. Tattoos can lead to self growth. Her idea of doing something productive "Invest your time, money, and effort into a gym membership, or yoga classes, or new clothes, or experimenting with different hairstyles if you're craving something new with your body, not a tattoo" So instead of getting tattoos all women should do whatever it takes to be skinny and have the latest fashions? So according to her going to the mall is a way to promote self growth and positive change? Wasting your money on overpriced goods so that some guy will want to fuck you is better than investing in artwork you will carry for the rest of your life? Awesome glad I know how to make my life more awesome now. And just to be a bitch I'm gonna go ahead and guess that girl who wrote the article is just dealing with some jealousy as she's not very attractive herself and looks to be rather plain and boring. Way to go lady! P.s. since when is a woman equal to a Ferrari or any other car? Talk about degrading yourself by getting tattoos and then you're gonna write and article comparing women to cars. Shit like this drives me up the fucking wall.

  42. I think people just like the imagery. It's powerful. Natives are a reminder of your wilder more human side I guess. Reminds us of a time when hunting and living off the land was the norm, as opposed to the TV pop culture trash that most of the world has been turned into. I'm into these Navajo or southwestern style Native designs that Chad Keoplinger has been doing. I'm not sure if I'd get one tattooed, but I'd totally consider a small piece if I was around him or knew him.
