  5. I think people just like the imagery. It's powerful. Natives are a reminder of your wilder more human side I guess. Reminds us of a time when hunting and living off the land was the norm, as opposed to the TV pop culture trash that most of the world has been turned into. I'm into these Navajo or southwestern style Native designs that Chad Keoplinger has been doing. I'm not sure if I'd get one tattooed, but I'd totally consider a small piece if I was around him or knew him.

  6. I remember the first time my brother's friend pulled up in jacked up mudder Bronco, booming Run DMC's "Dumb Girl" out of a box with two 12's-such an odd juxtaposition. My other neighbor who's dad was a wood worker and built a halfpipe in their backyard, had a matching Confederate flag skateboard and surfboard. Such was my childhood.

  10. I don't think there are any trade secrets in TAM or maybe they send me a special version where they take them all out beforehand. I always just thought of it being a magazine where tattoo artists can speak freely without having to worry about alienating potential clients and giving clients too much info for their own good. A lot of the interviews are similar in content to the artists interviews on this site (good thing) in the sense that they are very informative but in no way provide a gate to learning how to tattoo. It is a great magazine and the only tattoo magazine I read cover to cover, although I have been known to pick up a copy of Tattoo Energy to look at the pictures.

  11. I have a few pics, but I'm only posting them in order to stem the tsunami-like tide of Duffa's hate. Apologies for the quality of the pics. It was really, really crowded in there (great art + free beer = lots of people), so it was tough to get good angles, but here's a taste. Julian Zeff (a really nice guy and great artist who works at Unbreakable in LA--we chatted for a while and compared collections): Troy Denning (really hard to photograph a mirror, so I figured I'd at least smile for my camera): Erik Rieth of Seventh Son ("Cloud Dragon"): Luke Stewart of Seventh Son (this thing was about 6 feet tall!): I think this was by Jeff P, and while technically not a dragon, it is technically awesome: Bryan Randolph of Spider Murphy's: Paul Anthony Dobleman of Spider Murphy's (the border on this thing is incredible!): Stuart Cripwell of Spider Murphy's (how badass is this?): Theo Mindell of Spider Murphy's (really hard to get a good shot of this, but for those that have met Theo, you'll appreciate his addition of a 70s wizard): Kevin Pulido of Diamond Club (hard to believe he's only been tattooing a few years--this thing was huge and so beautiful): Junii Salmon of Diamond Club (leave it to her to make a dragon look like a sweet kitty): Yokohama Horiken of State of Grace: Some guy named Mike Roper: Yutaro Sakai of Skull & Sword: Shad (Hori Tsuki Kage): Trevor McStay ( @Duffa: AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE!): Ladies and germs, The Grime: The One Horitomo, State of Grace: Tattoo Mick of Zurich! Kahlil Rintye of Tattoo City: Oops--I went over the limit of 20 images per post. Be right back!

  12. hmm I have strange feeling that claiming to want a tattoo by Oliver Peck is going to be the new claiming to want tattoos by Kat Von D, or any of the other reality show tattooers. Just a note about the Wizard tatt trend. I briefly talked to Tim Lehi about doing one a couple years ago, def still want that to happen. His wizards are the fuckin jam. All evil and magical and metal-ey.

    Panther Tattoos

Looking through this thread again was fun. I have decided on a panther head from Hoyer when I go to New York. Going to get it on my "vacant" thigh (opposite the Lehi tiger on the other) I'm so stoked to finally get a panther tattooo. About time :)

Oh yeah; when you're comparing Shane O'neil with... B-tat... somewhere someone had to look at their portfolios and say "wow. B-tat's work looks like it was done by an epileptic colorblind koala bear with one eye missing*". The only reason he was allowed on was as a sacrificial lamb. *With one eye, the colorblind koala wouldn't have any depth perception. Thats why.. .you know... he doesn't have RAW TALENT. I'm Shawn, and I'm not here to make any friends. That's my opinion.

Every cripple has his own way of walking. I watched the show and while I was neither scandalized or disgusted, uplifted or inspired, I definitely could have spent an hour of my life in a more productive and constructive manner. If anyone wants to watch a genuinely inspiring, humility inducing, constructively critical and real-er than reality documentary, check out BBC Imagine's Grayson Perry-The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman. I also watched a doc. on Netflix recently called Circo, about a small family run Mexican circus, and one called Buck about a horseman. There are so many good documentaries out there about real people living real lives doing something interesting, unusual or unique I wonder why anyone would bother their bollox watching, making or participating in a tattoo reality tv show. Still, bless 'em, whatever gets them through the day.

Combining beer with coffee is not exactly a new idea, but this is one of the better irish offerings. They've done the fancy brewing bit in advance - all you need is a bottle-opener.

  22. Yeah, the weird ambivalence I feel with this kind of thing makes me think immediately of Pendleton blankets (and, more specifically their new Portland collection that just came out and caused a huge ruckus... my wife is into clothes.. a lot.. so I hear about things..) As far as designs go, this is actually what Pendleton did from the beginning; creating non-specific native-looking designs that appealed to both white folks and tribal people -- and were hugely successful for both -- and for many tribal people the blankets became important (and still are) for certain milestones, even though they weren't tribal specific. Also, I have a buffalo head and skull with feathers tattoo, planning to add a couple other things to it and still want a native lady head tattoo. I just wondered if anyone had discussed these types of tattoos or if it's simply a non-issue at this point.

  23. I live in oklahoma aswell and as shmitty says many white looking people are at least 1/16 indian and in the case of cherokee that means your legit and on the rolls. (vote and possibly get benefits from tribe) I am adopted My brothers are on rolls and vote and one of them is blonde haired. The tribes are really promoting indian arts as of late. I doubt someone would get one negative look for a tastefull naitive piece aside from a close minded person who decided long ago they hated tattoos.

  33. Greenpoint and Three Kings are both great shops. I check Chuck Donaghue's blog often (he is at Greenpoint), and most people on LST know that I have been tattooed for many hours by Matt Arriola (he is at Three Kings). I am probably a bit biased, but I think that Matt is one of the best tattooers around. Honestly right now Smith Street is the last place I would go in NYC. I have been tattooed there, and everyone was really cool, and I love the tattoo I got. Dan wasn't tattooing there yet, and Bert was working at Top Shelf the day I went in. Steve did the tattoo. The problem for me right now is everyone is going there, and it is all starting to look the same to me. They make great tattoos, but don't lose the forest for the trees.

Most of those guy's live on the east coast, and don't do traditional work,so i know what you mean about not knowing them.Your right the quality does go down after those four dudes.Although i think Bili has some talent. Those two black dudes are horrible. That girl Heather's work should be much further along considering she's been tattooing for around 13yrs.This is her site- The Art of Heather Sinn I guess they needed some eye candy on the show.I was thinking the same thing about why there isn't any traditional tattooers on these shows.I guess there might be a code of conduct for some traditional tattooers to not be seen on these stupid soap opera tv shows.

  36. It's only a matter of time. It's cheap to make with a tried-and-tested formula. People like to watch it and people LOVE to talk about it. That's why this type of programming has flooded the schedules over the last 5-10 years. Tattoos are just the most recent application of the formula. Right now, as I type there's a reality/contest show with a wedding theme on the tv, next it's probably cooking or someone's children. Crappy tattoos are the tip of the amoral tv iceberg. I'm still waiting for The RunningMan to hit the schedules for real. I'm just left thinking - A conversation about how good something is lasts 5 minutes. A conversation about how bad something is can last hours.

  38. @exume - Same thing with me, I have to actively make myself not see the crosses. I see the point about the nature of his blog, and his followers: It seems surprising that someone would be signed up to follow his posts and yet be offended by a pattern like that (surely it has featured before, even if only incidentally, in a pic of Jondix's work or similar).

  43. I don't enjoy doing full paragraphs of lettering in a "type face" style. If someone asks for something "hidden" in their tattoo, such as lettering or a name,I ask them......Why are you getting something tattooed on you that you aren't proud enough to wear openly in the world? I was taught to tattoo anything that walked in the door and I hardly ever turn down a tattoo.I just cannot understand the reason that people want to mess up a perfectly nice tattoo with, names.initials, vines that turn into names, names in white ink, names hidden in flowers,etc.. I wish more people in this area would figure out what they want, stop watching TV and get a tattoo that in no way involves a sad story or their favorite 15 lines of Sylvia Plath poetry or a half page of bible verse tattooed with brown pigment.I quit doing solid bands around anything and I have never tattooed a face.I don't believe in it.Inner lip is fine.I just tell them that it's going to be the most painful and expensive 10 minutes they have had in a while.

  45. I'm Sure it's been said previously but I am at the point I enjoy every tattoo that walks in the door. With all the shops and people not having money I'll be happy if a taz comes in the door..lol. Honestly if someone has an idea that may not make for a good tattoo I enjoy helping them make it in to something that will stand the test of time.

  48. Trees. In the last two years I've done about 100 of them. Trees with hidden words or initials anywhere in the design (in the trunk, branches, or roots) Hidden words or initials. If you've got something to say, SAY IT! Arm bands. They break up the arm in such weird spots it makes it difficult "add to" or expand on with future tattoos. Cherubs. Naked babies?! For reals?! Art. You really need V. Van Gogh's "Starry Night" on your arm? Go buy a t shirt!! Superman logos. You are from right here. Not Krypton This list can go on forever. Sometimes it's not the what that you are tattooing but the who. Arrive on time, be respectful and don't figit around. Bring a good story to tell. Tattooers love em! Most of all, leave your tuff guy attitude at home. You ain't as tuff as us.
