  1. Armbands that connect are bad luck. Variation: Armbands that connect can cut off the circulation and your arm will fall off. Face/hand/neck tattoos are illegal. I always feel bad posting right after Stewart. He goes into so much detail that it makes my two sentence posts seem lazy. Perhaps by mentioning this fact it will add a little bit of 'meat' to my post and make it seem like I have more than a ten word vocabulary.

Today I managed to score TWO cancellations with Valerie at Frith Street for early Jan 2012. What a great start to the year....

  3. Some of the stories and half-truths are pretty amusing and they serve a purpose to protect or obscure some things that should remain at least a little esoteric. What bugs me more than fables and tall-tales are when someone has half a useful piece of information and it swirls around in their busy little mind until they think they are a fountain of knowledge. They then spout that 'knowledge' to their friends or to people who are desperate for crumbs of information on the internet. But that's a different thing I guess. I'm not of the opinion that everything should be laid out and explained to any yahoo that comes into a shop or internet forum. So I don't want to burst too many bubbles. But... In may towns and cities in the north of England, many people believe if you get an 'X' tattooed on the sole of your foot you get it for free. Variations even extend to: If you get the bottom of your foot tattooed totally black, you get any other tattooing free, for life, from any other tattooer, in the world. As if more than 5 tattooers can agree on anything, never mind every tattooer in the world adhering to some secret code. Visitors or customers in those shops were all totally bummed out when I told them that's not true. At least not the way I work. Fucking nuts.

  4. Coincidentally, @dcostello told me that, in many towns and cities in the north of California, getting an X tattooed on the back of your hands gets you free drinks. He was wrong.

  13. There is a really wonderful tattoo by Valerie that isn't up anymore, so instead I will go for second place, which is a tattoo from back in March by Thomas Hooper. It's probably not objectively his best tattoo of the year, but I really love the choice of subject for this chest piece. It is a far less obviously aggressive animal choice than you tend to get on chest pieces, which is great because swans are as hard as fucking nails. I like the wing positions and it's webbed feet.

    General Movie Thread

Perhaps this is my film snobbishness rearing it's head, and really, it's more about clarification than anything so forgive my nitpicking... but I have to throw out there that it's not a remake of the Swedish version; it's an American adaptation of a book that happened to be made as a film in Sweden. Did it 'need' to be made? Maybe, maybe not. But the film is it's own entity. One could argue that the Swedish movie didn't need to be made, that the book on it's own is enough. Fincher is a talented dude, and putting his lens (pun intended) on the source material was great. The book still exists, as does the Swedish version, for folks who love them. (I just got into an extended argument about the Fincher version at work, and I'm still all fired up! :D

  16. almost every person who comes in wanting a "home made" tattoo covered will state that "the guy tattooed my friends and there tattoos looked good, so i don't know why mine looks so messed up" their tattoos were messed up too, you just aren't stuck looking at it all day, everyday.

  17. Got my last tattoo of 2011 tonight. A Christmas present from my girlfriend by way of gift certificate to my friendly neighborhood tattoo shop. Crappy cell phone pic but the best I can get at the moment. It was done by Paul Pearson at Tried & True Tattoo, Smyrna, TN.

I'm flattered! I'll also jump on the bandwagon and go with my tigers. All credit goes to Mr. Lehi. I just had to lie there and take it, and he was kind enough to complete the whole affair in 7.5 hours. And no, I did not get them in one sitting. He actually broke it up over 4, so it wasn't that bad. Who am I kidding? It was the worst, but at least he's fast. Really, though, there are so many jawdroppingly good tattoos that I see almost daily--often from our very own @Valerie Vargas and @Stewart Robson, but also from local shops like Blackheart and Spider Murphy's--that I can't pick a favorite on someone else. There's just too much good stuff out there.

  26. the problem is in my opinion is that just because there are more and more tattooers everyday the ratio of hard working creative and original ones are falling off.. part of self promotion is you have to make yourself and your work public. if not no one outside your town would really get to know your work. its obvious valerie is an amazing tattooer, with that comes all the no tallent as clowns who rip everyones shit off. i think its sad that people arent just willing to sit down and learn to draw a girl head with an animal head of their choice. instead to rip it off. then there is the part of a customer wants the exact thing. fine . try to steer them away but if they are persistant dont fucking publish it on the internet.... i love how people are called out on it...

  27. Just get a tattoo and watch how it ages. If a tattooer has large work in their portfolio, such as backpieces etc, it's a pretty safe bet that some of it will be at least a year old. Most of the problem here comes from the fact that once we've finished a tattoo, particularly with one-shot tattoos, we rarely see it or the client again. Some of the photos on my website or blog have healed work next to the fresh stuff. Thomas Hooper occasionally posts photos of his work when it's settled into the skin. If you're talking about colour portraits, they look like shit 5+ years later unless they have a strong outline and plenty of black. There's many reasons for tattoos to look like tattoos. Another way is to visit conventions and see what people with healed tattoos look like. Remember: look but don't touch.

  28. great advice on tapping in practice I used to never do it even on armbars and I would hurt for a week. my small list of training or fight injuries dislocated toes piece of turnbuckle stuck under nail bed got infected cracked eye socket- didnt know, or even when it happened but an eye exam showedd damage crushed nasal passage broken nose stitches on eye from accidental headbutt dislocated pinky finger dislocated shoulder(fought the first rd happened sometime dont really recall when but the doctors jumped in the ring and I thought the other guy threw in the towel. It was only when the came rushing to my corner did I realize my left hand was dangling below my knee) I am also dealing with a chronic hip issue thought to be caused from muay thai kick box. Doctors are worried that MRI will make the hip joint too unstable so we have been doing all this other crap before MRI

  31. Lesson to the wise ,you can't train through injuries .If your serious about what you do treat any injury accordingly ,this may sound prudent to male bravodo ,but then again you haven't seen the number of guys virtually ruined, depressed or cripped by what started out as treatable .

    InkMasters??

Oliver Peck is one of the hosts and I guarantee he's not a corporate asshole just in it for the money. Go watch his interview and then come talk shit. I don't know anything about the show really, and I probably won't watch it as I don't watch t.v. at all really. Also there's already a thread about this which I'm to lazy to find and post the link to.
