  2. Do yourself a favor and follow this blog: TRUE NATURE TATTOO Brian Kaneko tattoos out of True Nature, a private studio in Arcata, but I met him (briefly) at Diamond Club. I can't claim to know him at all, but the few times I've met him, he's been really nice and very humble. He's an old friend of Bill and Junii Salmon's and, like Bill & Junii, adheres to the Horitoshi style of tattooing: BLACK backgrounds, white-tipped peonies, and...well, you know it when you see it. On his blog, he's documenting a full suit he started on a client who had no other tattoos. It's really great to watch it start to come together.

  4. This came up in the other thread http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-101/1728-tattoo-what-you-want-misleading-true-page2.html#post24847, people getting religious tattoos, while being a atheist. I personally enjoy the strong emotions religious imagery stirs in people, whether they are a theist or atheist. What are your opinions?
    3 points
  5. I'm getting an overtly religious tattoo. People I know have been very funny about why I would do so as I'm definitely an atheist. I don't need to believe in god to like the art (especially catholic and orthodox) and besides my atheism doesn't translate into anti-religious feelings. Therefore I don't feel uncomfortable with this at all. Western society is full of Christian imagery and custom from hot cross buns to celebrating christmas and most of us engage with it on multiple level's taking on the aspect we identify with and ignoring the rest. I don't see the appreciation of the artistic side of religious art as being much different. Also a large amount of religious art and custom's have roots that can be traced back even further to paganism or Judaism or before even all that ultimately (although I'm absolutely no expert). For me things like the ROA or praying hands or Jesus portraits are things to be appreciated aesthetically and if people see more into it that's great for them.

  6. IMO, I think that whether it's a dorje, rock of ages, Om mani padme mantra, or Quetzalcoatl, it's all iconography. Which can translate well beyond the boundries of the faith it's associated with.

  12. "Religious: : relating to or manifesting faithful devotion to an acknowledged ultimate reality or deity" I think if someone is drawn to an image, there's something in it they relate to-whether it be through personal experience or cultural influence, or a combination of the two. I'm a baptized and confirmed (through the rite of confirmation) Catholic, but rarely go to church. Like I was telling someone the other day "People might see my bookshelf and think "That's a spiritual guy"; in reality, I'm just a guy trying to understand spirituality". I don't operate under the pretense that every person with a religious tattoo is spiritual or even trying to be.

  13. I'm not sure I'd call myself an atheist, per see. I'm just not religious to any faith. That said, I'm leaning heavily toward a Rock of Ages back piece (with a twist) in 2012. I'll have the time and the money to do it right. That image just screams "TATTOO" louder to me than any other design I can think of. I figure if your gonna do a ROA, it ought to be a full back.

    Calling @MsRad

One of the greatest contributors to the LST forum @MsRad seems to have fallen off the face of the earth (or this board at least) the last few months. I wish she would join us again, and I bet I`m not the only one.

    InkMasters??

not a fan of anything put on television that uses our craft and art as a means to fill a corporate suits pocket. Most advertisors and people involved are the very same that refuse to hire tattooed people. Its sickening.

  22. I like to give the person applying the tattoo the leeway to do what they do best. Seeing the stencil or watching the artist draw on my skin is enough for me. I choose the artist for their skills and might as well let them use em! Last tattoo I got I was asked to look in the mirror after the stencil was applied and declined. My thoughts are do I really know what I'm looking at???? What error could I find? I enjoy the finished product, so I stay out of their way.....

    To laser or not..

I would just get more ink. I have a tattoo that I don´t like very much and have attempted laser removal and with colorful tattoos this could take years and thousands of dollars to remove and might still not be completely gone. I gave up and did a cover up on it which I am also not very happy with but it is much better than it was before and I am also thinking about getting more tattoos so it´s not the first thing people look at.

  24. Over the course of the last year and a half I got bit by the tattoo bug really bad. I've been in the chair 14 different times in that span, and it's all because I found the artist who can translate my ideas into tattoos i really want to wear for the rest of my life. Every time I've gone in to see him so far it's been one of these three ways: 1) "I've got this old tattoo from the (80's or 90's), would you be willing to fix it? You can do whatever you want to make it better." 2) I don't tattoo, but I can draw respectably well, enough so that I can take an idea to him on paper and say "Can you make this work where I want it? Do whatever you need." 3) Go in with the vaguest of reference materials and say "I'd like something with a lucky horseshoe and a black cat, do whatever you want." Almost shit myself when I saw what he came up with. And ended up with my current favorite tattoo on my body. So far, trusting the the guy that is gonna tattoo me has been working out really well for me. Maybe it helps that I don't attach any deep meaning to any of my tattoos, I'm just really drawn to the style of art that tattoos represent. Just my 2 cents.

  25. I agree with Iwar. I try and be a little vague just to see what they can come up with. I will say sometimes I stare over their shoulder during the drawing process and yell violently to add or remove shit.

  26. Hey Iwar - the gallery system isn't hooked up to the 'notifications' system at the top unfortunately. You should be able to receive email notifications by selecting 'receive email updates' under 'image tools' for each image in your gallery. I'll keep an eye out for enhancements for this. I agree that it should be better. Cheers

  27. So I just read the first 15 pages and I'm skipping the last 10. What have I learned from all this? Next time I go to get a tattoo, I am just simply going to point at the artist, point at the location I want something done in, and then point to the reference material I brought with me so as to not offend anyone.

    Food and Drink list

Ate at some great restaurants not a million miles away from Frith St. Tattoo. Friday night: Abeno Too. Pretty authentic (in taste, if not setting) okonomiyaki place. They served Asahi kuro nama (black lager), a bonus. Saturday night: Hawksmoor Seven Dials. Shared a 1.4 kg steak with beef dripping chips. If you like Old Fashioneds, the bar makes an interesting 'tobacco Old Fashioned' using a homemade tobacco bitters. They spray some kind of alcohol on the ice and light it to fast-melt them into icewater also... Unusual take on preparing the OF, basically, but it tasted reassuringly traditional. Sunday lunch: Polpo, a venetian tapas place in Soho. The bartender mixes a pretty good Old Fashioned here also.

That's true. Especially as of lately, my OCD is kicking in and staring too much at 'em. Good thing I'll have something new to look at today

  30. I like to give the artist a rough idea of what I want. I can't draw, so I leave that up to them. And I agree that seeing the stencil for the first time is half the fun. When Tim Lehi unfolded the huge drawing for my tigers, I went wide-eyed. I don't believe in dragons, but they sure do make awesome tattoos. Along the same lines, I'd still like a Rock of Ages and maybe a curly-bearded Jesus at some point.

    Hello All

Cheers. Scott's work is awesome. I went to the convention the day after the chestpiece so I wasn't in the mood for anything else. I wish I'd got a few small ones though now. So it goes I guess It's a ROA backpiece but it's not finished yet. It's by @valerievargas, it's in the @stewartrobson Frith Street video on here but that was a while ago now. As I said. I'm a very lucky lad

  32. My cover up went from this: to this: Because the original tattoo had a lot of black in it, and colours all over the place, I honestly had no idea if it would work out but figured I'd ask anyway. I am pretty farkin happy to say the least!!! (and yes that is Venom lol)

  33. One day at the shop this chick was telling us we should pay to tattoo her. We said the only way it would happen was if the artist got to put his signature one her. She said she would do it if we gave her twenty bucks. We said that for twenty bucks we would have to sign her and her friend. They both did it... Not the worst tattoos I have ever seen - just the worst decision.
