Buying a king size print from one of your favorite artists, getting it framed properly, hanging it on your wall and taking two steps back. I´ve been staring at the original hanging by Marius´ station for hours while getting tattooed, so when he decided to make giclee prints of it I had to rape my wallet and buy one. Stoked!7 points

@irezumi here's a great photo showing the scale of that tapestry, it's ridiculous. Plus the dude who made it is a bona-fide weirdo and that makes me like it even more. Knowing how something like that is made, it really blows my mind the scale of it.3 points

Haven't seen a dedicated all-around art thread, and Hogg couldn't think of one either. Tattoo-related or not. Stuff you've done or stuff you like. Hobo Nickels: Appalachian History » Hobo Nickels Coin collectors today consider the hobo nickel a numismatic treasure, a tribute to long- forgotten folk artists who often literally carved for their supper. The Buffalo nickel debuted in 1913, but it wasn’t until the Great Depression struck that hobo nickel carving reached its peak. During this period, buffalo nickels were the most common nickels in circulation. The sudden scarcity of jobs in the early 1930s forced a huge number of men to hit the road. Certainly some coins were carved to fill the idle hours. More importantly, a ‘knight of the road,’ with no regular source of income, could take one of these plentiful coins and turn it into a folk art piece, which could in turn be sold or traded for small favors such as a meal or shelter for a night. In a community of generally anonymous drifters, two carvers rose to prominence among hobo nickel creators. Bertram ‘Bert’ Wiegand was born in 1880 and carved from 1913 to 1949. He signed his coins by removing L I and Y from L I B E R T Y, leaving only B E R T. He tutored the man coin collectors consider the giant of hobo nickel carving: George Washington ‘Bo’ Hughes (born between 1895 and 1900 in Theo, Mississippi). Bert met the young teenager in a jungle, or hobo camp, along the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio railroad line, and Bo’s first nickels appeared two years later, in 1915. Bo carved till about 1980, when he was last seen by his friend of 40 years, Williard Chisolm, in a Florida camp. Life as a hobo took its toll: the rigorous manual labor Bo undertook to survive during the money-tight, poverty-ridden 30s rendered his hands stiff and permanently damaged. Frequent beatings by ruthless detectives prowling railroads (where many hobos resided) in search of freeloaders and thieves compounded his dexterity impairment. Nevertheless, devoted to his craft, Bo worked through the pain and frustrating impediments throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s, but in 1957, while he was working on a nickel, his chisel suddenly slipped and struck his hand. The injury forced the once-great hobo nickel engraver to resort to a haphazard punching method. Bo continued his work, but with less frequency and diminished quality, and as America moved into the post-war era genuine hobo nickels became a thing of the past. The U.S. Mint ceased striking Buffalo nickels in 1938. Skull Nickels: Skull Nickels | Colossal A number of Hobo Nickel artists etched away the flesh of the subject to reveal these awesomely macabre skulls.1 point

You would have thought that a government organization like the TSA would hire people who've not only graduated high school but who've taken some kind of training to not be so fucking stupid. Not really the same thing but kind of: I once had a Florida State Trooper say to me "for all I know you could be a terrorist, they did get in through Canada after all" he was being dead serious.1 point -

Thanks Ursula, it is a pretty rad tattoo! It's the result of having too much illegal money and getting high on my own supply ;) Fortunately there's a lot of powder grey shading that won't need any laser but some of the black parts are pretty damn black. They did give me some EMLA cream, it's only 2.5% lidocane and really didn't seem to do much. She offered to shoot me up with some lidocane but since it's such a big area I'd have to pay for the time which she said would amount to $150. I figured it'll be done soon enough that I can just bear it. It is pretty painful, it feels like a combination of an electric shock and someone snapping a rubberband on you times 1000. When they stop and start again it hurts but once they get going it's not as bad but it's still pretty bad. I know there's another topical cream called LMX4 that's 4% lidocane but it doesn't have as much as the other stuff in the EMLA. Karl, do you have an opinion on the 2 creams? EMLA and LMX4?1 point

My only question is why would you laser suck an awesome tattoo!! haha just kidding, but I do like it in some ways. Anyways, how bad was it to get done? I've heard it hurts like crazy. I've also heard some places offer a topical ointment that helps with the pain. I'm looking forward to seeing more photos and pictures of when you start getting it re-tattooed.1 point

Yellow
gougetheeyes reacted to Ursula for a topic
Here's what I've found with my tattoos. I will also mention I am a medium dark Italian, so I kind of look Persian, or just really tanned all the time, olive complextion but still pretty pale in a way. If you are of African decent you might have a problem depending how dark your skin is. On me, when a really talented artist has used yellow it seems like it's going to last. The tattoo I'm thinking of is about 2 years old and the yellow is a very golden hue. It looks almost as bright as when it was new. The tattoo is located on my inner arm by my arm pit so it doesn't see the sun very often at all. I also have Homer Simpson's head on my ankle and so does my best friend. Both were done by my fiancé, her skin is very white, very pale and it's held up on both of us really well. I have a large tattoo on my thigh that was done by someone not as experienced and for whatever reason the yellow in that is almost totally gone. It was much lighter to begin with than the other ones. Over all a bunch of my tattoos have little bits of yellow in them and they mostly have been fine. If I was you, I'd get it done in the style of an old tattoo with a heavy black outline and deep golden yellow and make the wings brown or red or both. That's just me though, I'm sure there's other ways of doing it and making it real nice.1 point -

@gougetheeyes I spoke with james spencer briggs on the phone and he verbally agreed and said whenever I wanted to come out but man I havnt been able to get him to reply or catch him for months to pin down an exact time he wasnt in LA. Ofcoarse if i get work from him it will be b&g something light/dark in subject really would give him artistic freedom. I also dig the idea of something a bit more traditional and at that point I would have a harder decision (in my mind) on artist but subject matter would be pretty simple probably skull, panther or something of the like and lots of roses lol1 point

I love his work. I actually own two of the paintings in that portfolio. His lady is a fibre artist like me so obviously I have mad respect for her too. Let me go see if I can find some images of her work..... Ok found some stuff on her Facebook page.. She does free hand machine embroidery (some machines are programmed and all you do is press start, hers she actually guides to make the drawings). Her name is Meghan McAleavy If you were at the tattoo convention a couple weeks ago in SF and saw Robert's banner, she made that too.1 point -

Yea but plenty of owl tattoos aren't hipster and its a fine line with whipshading. My wife calls my (small) owl tattoo my hipster tattoo and it bugs me haha but I still like it. Animals that are humans is getting a bit old. The hipsters themselves annoy me most of all. Ive seen a few with amazing traditional western tattoos but they are still hipsters and thus bug me. They take many things I love and make it a trendy joke and for that I despise this "sub-culture". I1 point
