  3. I suppose it depends on whos available. The other factor is how much money I have. Theres not much demand for ageing overwieght rent boys in the runup to Christmas. September was good. I was tattooed 5 times that month. Mainly due to the London Tattoo Convention.

  5. Well, I have been getting tattooed every week in what will become a year very very soon. With a few breaks while my tattooer has traveled to Europe. If money could allow it I think I could go more offten or longer session, but it's better this way so I don't get too carried away.

    White Ink.

Wow, if I thought they'd really come out that cool, I'd get some all white tattoos myself. I think, perhaps, someone has adjusted the colors on this photo. The white pigment is under the skin, not sitting on top of it, so any naturally occurring pigment will tint the tattoo. And I think part of why it fades is that it's a pigment, not an ink, which is why colors need black outlines. But if that's what she really wants then that's what she wants, just find a tattooer who will be cool and make her first experience a good one.

  9. At the moment, I'm going around once every 2 weeks. That seems about right to me - just enough time to forget how much it hurts, and the horrible "hangover" I get the day after.

  10. Once a week if I could. Problem is I don't want to run out of skin!

  12. I was running around the lake the other day (shirtless, duh) and OPD was posting outside of their cars drinking coffee and bullshitting (as always). As I was running by I couldnt help but notice that they were pointing at me like I was either: A: and ex-con B: they liked my tattoos C: they were into dudes, and thought I was hot. D: they were pointing at the hot chicks running behind me and didnt give a shit about me. Id like to think it was B/C/.

  15. I know a lot of the time folks complain about receiving negative comments from the non-tattooed about being tattooed. I get my share of stares, but have ever you gotten any compliments from the general population that just made you smile? Normally on the positive side I get "I love {This/That} tattoo", or "Was that done locally?" I smile, nod and answer politely. Not that I ever gave a shit what other people think of me, but I've gotten "You know, you just wouldn't look right without the tattoos." (or words to that effect) on three separate occasions recently. It just made me feel really good.

  20. I can agree with the doctor thing as well! Also I found over in Newark, NJ (I used to live there so I go back a lot) I usually get a lot of comments by people working in the shops. Also almost every person that works at the Panera Cafe, almost always starts a conversation about my tattoo/their tattoo as they are almost always tattooed. Probably the funniest response I got was in a Starbucks by where I work. I usually go in there in a suit, but once went there on a weekend. The guy working the counter recognized me and was blown away that suit-types can actually like metal (Cannibal Corpse shirt) and have tattoos. It was kind of funny.

  22. One time I was in the grocery store in shorts and a long sleeve t shirt. At the time I had close to full sleeves a tiger snake battle on my calf, but nothing on my lower legs except for the sailor jerry Love thy neighbor. Had some old vet with a couple really cool old tattoos walk by and say that's a damn fine tattoo, it's a shame it's on the back of your leg and you don't get to see it. He elaborated a little more on it, but it was cool just having a conversation about tattoos with someone who appreciates them and not asking me how they can get hooked up with discount work.

    Itchy tattoo?

I personally found a few beers and the itch is almost gone! I very much agree on the itchier at night. That is usually the time it is INSANE. My roommate thought I was on drugs once because I burst out of my room because it itched so bad then rummaged through the freezer for frozen veggies. Freezing cold is the absolute best, greatest, wonderful thing for itchy tattoos. Trick is to cover more than the tattoo with the cold item (frozen peas are my favorite!)

  31. Had one of the guys working in my local Coles (supermarket) stop what he was doing and come over to gawk at me. Some kind of foreign accent (I hate to assume, but my guess would be he was from India/Pakistan?) - "Oh, is beautiful! *stares for ages*... "oh, she's holding a knife! I thought it was just a nice girl! Wow!". He was so friendly ^.^ I've had a couple of really old ladies say things to the effect of "I like your look", or "Good on you for being different". Usually in a nice way, so I guess those are compliments?

There are a lot of people who want the experience of having a tattoo, to have the story of getting a tattoo, but not have the responsibility of having one. It seems like that is actually a huge portion of clients lately. All you can do is treat them well, offer them the best advice you can, give them all the info, and either you don't do the tattoo, or you explain touch ups on things like this aren't free, and give them a clean tattoo to the best of your ability. You might be able to turn them into a person who had a good enough experience that they want more tattoos in the future. Treat 'em well, cover your ass, and take the business.

  33. vain ? no. I really don't get why it's not o.k. to sign your name on tattoo art but it is ok to sign your name on any other kind of art (paintings, sculpture, illustration, etc.) If the person getting the tattoo doesn't care that you signed it or wants you to sign it I really don't see where the problem is. Y'all need to get over it. After all, just because it's on you doesn't make it your art. It is and always will be the art of the person who did the tattoo.

I always get the same questions... Q: Do they hurt? A: Only when my mom sees them. Q: Where is the worst place to get tattooed? A: Prison Q: Why would you go do and do that to yourself? A: The same reason you wouldn't thats just a few.....

    Full Back Piece Thread

I had the chance to go to the Bay Area Convention of the Tattoo Arts today and I now consider myself spoiled silly. Backpieces and bodysuits! Not only was I able to purchase a copy of the impressive 2 vol. Bloodwork: Bodies collection, which documents some outstanding pieces, but I was also able to attend Horitomo's presentation on backpieces. I don't know about others who may have attended today but I found it very enlightening. Essentially addressing a variety of Horitomo's own beliefs on how a traditional backpiece evolved to it's current state since the Edo Period, his belief on traditional composition, what makes up a "completed" backpiece, the differences between pieces for men vs. women, even the traditional belief that the bacpiece should be the bearer's first tattoo prior to adding sleeves. In my own account this was the exact opposite of my own planning, where I'd started with my arms. Jill, had mentioned this to me, and there are many examples of this in Japanese tattoo magazines, but I always assumed it had to do with the traditional idea of hiding the tattoo behind clothing. It was then interesting to hear Horitomo giving examples of how adding sleeves first was potentially detrimental to the composition of background in an artistic composite. Even an artist's signature added to the tattoo, which was debated in another post was discussed. It was a great opportunity for me to look into the traditional Japanese tattoo mindset without having to question the authenticity of the source as there's so much "exoticism" sometimes applied. There's another seminar tomorrow and I'd recommend it. Besides it also comes with Horitomo's new book too. Bonus! Anyone else's thoughts about it today?

  48. Ok, so the Feminism and Tattoos Thread got me thinking a bit about something positive: preferential treatment because of tattoos. This could also be seen as a negative by some, though I'm guessing most folks on here have experienced this as a plus. Maybe you got a deal on a lawn mower or a free cup of coffee or just had a really nice talk with someone you otherwise wouldn't have spoken to. For example, I mentioned I most likely showed my wife-to-be some preference in serving her drinks when we first met because we got to talking about tattoos. That, and she's hot. So, good experiences with preferential tattoo treatment??
    1 point
  49. This isn't preferential treatment, but I blew a tire once on I-95N and pulled into the PA Welcome Station to wait for a towtruck. (someone had borrowed my jack). I was sitting by the car grumpy, and this older gent came up and started hitting me up. Given that it was a rest stop, I assumed he wanted a little roadside fun and cold shouldered him a bit... until he showed me his full DON FUCKING NOLAN backpiece that he got back in the day. We ended up talking for two hours, traded info and all that, but I never heard back from him. Shame I never got pics. I always said tattoos were passports; sometimes they take you to Tahiti to sit on the beach and lounge and sometimes they take you to some god forsaken hellhole, but if you sign up for an adventure, you're likely to get it.
