There are a lot of people who want the experience of having a tattoo, to have the story of getting a tattoo, but not have the responsibility of having one. It seems like that is actually a huge portion of clients lately. All you can do is treat them well, offer them the best advice you can, give them all the info, and either you don't do the tattoo, or you explain touch ups on things like this aren't free, and give them a clean tattoo to the best of your ability. You might be able to turn them into a person who had a good enough experience that they want more tattoos in the future. Treat 'em well, cover your ass, and take the business.

  7. I'm finding this thread quite interesting. When I started getting tattooed I was not particularly well informed, but I had a good idea of what I wanted. I started with my inner-forearms. I figured, if I'm getting these cool tattoos why shouldn't other people get to enjoy them as well? I work as a carpenter, so that is not a field where people judge you too harshly on appearance, more on competence. Reading about the warped tour body suit made me laugh. I'm not there at all, in fact if I wear a hoodie I appear un-tattooed. But in reading and looking at tattooed folk I've started working my way up, gives a more balanced look. Just got my chest done, you can't see that one at all with a t-shirt on. So I'm starting to see the appeal of semi private tattoos as well.

This guy's paintings are pretty phenomenal, and I mean that in the sincerest, most non-ironic way possible. That is an Obama UFO made of tighty-whities. @Ursula, you may have made my morning.

Ive never been 100% happy with a white tattoo that I've done. 95% of the people who want then are not happy with the results either. "Can you just touch this bit up, can you make it a little thicker/thinner, can you make it MORE white"? etc. Most of the time these people don't have many tattoos so all their attention is on this one small thing. At our shop we usually explain why getting a tattoo in light grey is better than only white. (kinda like the drop shadow thing in california style script.) They get the same 'subtle' effect and we don't get the headache of doing an all-white tattoo that may or may not look totally white when it's healed. If they insist, I'll do it, but let them know touch ups are not free for that kind of tattoo.

I have done a couple of them, usually small names or phrases, and healed they end up looking kind of like a scar. That said you should keep the design really really simple. Pro's i would say that it is a subtle kind of tattoo if it holds well. Cons would be that it could almost be considered a temporary tattoo, sun damage will eventually fade it to the point that it is hard to see. Oh and it would be kind of hard to talk most tattoo artists into doing it.

I love his work. I actually own two of the paintings in that portfolio. His lady is a fibre artist like me so obviously I have mad respect for her too. Let me go see if I can find some images of her work..... Ok found some stuff on her Facebook page.. She does free hand machine embroidery (some machines are programmed and all you do is press start, hers she actually guides to make the drawings). Her name is Meghan McAleavy If you were at the tattoo convention a couple weeks ago in SF and saw Robert's banner, she made that too.

@gougetheeyes I agree, when I got mine in the mail I was even more impressed. He's apparently had no art training but still has figured out things like making the top lip darker than the bottom and shading the edges of round objects. Best $100 painting I own.

  27. Today I held interviews for a position that I am hiring for. One of the interviewees wore Capri pants, Flip Flops and ridiculous looking shirt. She was a mess and although she could articulate how she would be a valuable employee. Unfortunately, I couldn't get over her attire and that is my reason for not considering her for the position. What's funny is that everyone else who saw her, judged her based on a piercing over her lip and the tattoos on her feet. Those things didn't bother me in the least. What I didn't like is she didn't dress appropriatly for a job interview.

  28. Piercings>Bad Breath>Tattoos? Bad breath? Really? It'd be foolish not to consider how visible tattoos might affect employment opportunities before getting them. Which is why this topic being brought up in articles/conversation is odd to me: am I going to read it and go "oh shit, I never realised!"?

Shes actually really timid about getting a tattoo. She really wants one but is scared about what her family might think. I think the negatives in this case will overturn the positives. All I told her was that Ill take you to a good shop and they will do what you want to some extent. I told her to just say fuck it and get a back piece. She looked confused and then laughed. This is getting hella emo.

Roses - wrong or right way?

I'm a long way from an expert but I suspect the "right" answer is that the "right" way is the way you like it/wanted it. So tell her to GFH'rself! :D

  34. Excellent thread! I love, love, love Temple. I've been tattooed there by Freddy and Heath Preheim, and my wife has been tattooed there by Freddy, Heath and Jamie Ruth. We've also stopped by to see other friends get tattooed, or just to visit with Freddy when we're in the neighborhood. Those of you have been tattooed there know that things run on a slightly looser schedule, but it's all part of Temple's charm. Just sit back, soak up some great stories and enjoy your small place in tattoo history.

These paintings are done by a guy who calls himself Taco Werewolf. I wish I was in Florida so I could take a photo of the letter he sent me (I purchased a painting from him online). In the letter he mentions putting his finger print on the back of the painting as well as signing it with his real name too just to make sure. Anyways I think they are pretty great and at $100 I can see why they are all sold but one. If you go to his website there is a very detailed description of each painting expelaining why he painted it and what it means. He's just some weird dude who is really into Obama.

    Full Back Piece Thread

I had the chance to go to the Bay Area Convention of the Tattoo Arts today and I now consider myself spoiled silly. Backpieces and bodysuits! Not only was I able to purchase a copy of the impressive 2 vol. Bloodwork: Bodies collection, which documents some outstanding pieces, but I was also able to attend Horitomo's presentation on backpieces. I don't know about others who may have attended today but I found it very enlightening. Essentially addressing a variety of Horitomo's own beliefs on how a traditional backpiece evolved to it's current state since the Edo Period, his belief on traditional composition, what makes up a "completed" backpiece, the differences between pieces for men vs. women, even the traditional belief that the bacpiece should be the bearer's first tattoo prior to adding sleeves. In my own account this was the exact opposite of my own planning, where I'd started with my arms. Jill, had mentioned this to me, and there are many examples of this in Japanese tattoo magazines, but I always assumed it had to do with the traditional idea of hiding the tattoo behind clothing. It was then interesting to hear Horitomo giving examples of how adding sleeves first was potentially detrimental to the composition of background in an artistic composite. Even an artist's signature added to the tattoo, which was debated in another post was discussed. It was a great opportunity for me to look into the traditional Japanese tattoo mindset without having to question the authenticity of the source as there's so much "exoticism" sometimes applied. There's another seminar tomorrow and I'd recommend it. Besides it also comes with Horitomo's new book too. Bonus! Anyone else's thoughts about it today?

With all the shops and people not having money I'll be happy if a taz comes in the door..lol. Honestly if someone has an idea that may not make for a good tattoo I enjoy helping them make it in to something that will stand the test of time.
