Haven't seen a dedicated all-around art thread, and Hogg couldn't think of one either. Tattoo-related or not. Stuff you've done or stuff you like. Hobo Nickels: Appalachian History » Hobo Nickels Coin collectors today consider the hobo nickel a numismatic treasure, a tribute to long- forgotten folk artists who often literally carved for their supper. The Buffalo nickel debuted in 1913, but it wasn’t until the Great Depression struck that hobo nickel carving reached its peak. During this period, buffalo nickels were the most common nickels in circulation. The sudden scarcity of jobs in the early 1930s forced a huge number of men to hit the road. Certainly some coins were carved to fill the idle hours. More importantly, a ‘knight of the road,’ with no regular source of income, could take one of these plentiful coins and turn it into a folk art piece, which could in turn be sold or traded for small favors such as a meal or shelter for a night. In a community of generally anonymous drifters, two carvers rose to prominence among hobo nickel creators. Bertram ‘Bert’ Wiegand was born in 1880 and carved from 1913 to 1949. He signed his coins by removing L I and Y from L I B E R T Y, leaving only B E R T. He tutored the man coin collectors consider the giant of hobo nickel carving: George Washington ‘Bo’ Hughes (born between 1895 and 1900 in Theo, Mississippi). Bert met the young teenager in a jungle, or hobo camp, along the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio railroad line, and Bo’s first nickels appeared two years later, in 1915. Bo carved till about 1980, when he was last seen by his friend of 40 years, Williard Chisolm, in a Florida camp. Life as a hobo took its toll: the rigorous manual labor Bo undertook to survive during the money-tight, poverty-ridden 30s rendered his hands stiff and permanently damaged. Frequent beatings by ruthless detectives prowling railroads (where many hobos resided) in search of freeloaders and thieves compounded his dexterity impairment. Nevertheless, devoted to his craft, Bo worked through the pain and frustrating impediments throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s, but in 1957, while he was working on a nickel, his chisel suddenly slipped and struck his hand. The injury forced the once-great hobo nickel engraver to resort to a haphazard punching method. Bo continued his work, but with less frequency and diminished quality, and as America moved into the post-war era genuine hobo nickels became a thing of the past. The U.S. Mint ceased striking Buffalo nickels in 1938. Skull Nickels: Skull Nickels | Colossal A number of Hobo Nickel artists etched away the flesh of the subject to reveal these awesomely macabre skulls.4 points

dan's pretty right on with his analysis. every tattooer wants to be the traveling cool guy and loves the attention they get from the people blowing him at a convention or "guest spot". i remember when someone coming to do a "guest spot" at a shop meant a good ass tattooer was coming to work. now its whoever is willing to come by to sit and rape the town with 9 round outlines and dogshit ethics to make a buck. when we have had a "guest artist" at my shop, we have a good tattooer doing custom work on people from all around (scott sylvia, rassier, lehi, stell, hori taku, Higgs, whitehead, etc...... those are "guest artists". when i need someone to sit in on a shift, that aint a "guest artist", thats a working tattooer. and the idea of working at a shop whenever the hell you want and traveling whenever you want is mind boggling. i mean i guess its fun to do the same 5 or 6 tattoos in every city you travel to but dong the same shit everyday doesn't make you a great tattooer. how about paying some dues and actually doing what all those good tattooers have done instead of sucking each other off and riding each others dicks. but hey, to each his own. right?2 points -
I've only ever traveled to get tattooed...... well, the good ones. I got tattooed by Phil Holt in San Jose, San Francisco, and Tampa.... walk in tattoos in Oakland, and Brooklyn. last minute roses in San Diego, the LA area, San Francisco, and Chicago.... Made a lot of attempts to get tattoos in Cali (since it is only an 11 hour drive away), and been tattooed by friends in Dallas.... Got tattooed by Chris Dettmer in Germany w/appt once, got a Cape Town tiny party tat last year, and for the past 4 years I've been traveling back and forth to Denmark getting tattooed by Henning. The first 2 appts were for my ribs and a little over a year apart. For just over 2 years, we have worked on my back, so the trips have been more frequent. I never thought twice about traveling to get tattooed. No matter how far it would be.2 points

V and Gravity's Rainbow are for me the best two novels that Pynchon produced. Both took me probably about three or four goes to get through them, but perseverence pays off in the end. He is often compared to writers like Rushdie, Eco and Calvino in terms of post-modern, magic-realist styles of writing, but I find him to be much more in a tradition of American writers such as Burroughs and Vonnegut. I prefer him to Don DeLillo as well, and I don't really understand why they are so often mentioned in the same breath.1 point -

In about 6 weeks I will be traveling back to Japan to complete my sleeve and although there are some amazing Tattooers here in Australia (especially in my hometown) I thought it'd be cool to have at least one piece done by a Japanese Tattooer. It started off as a one point while on a holiday, and then figured it may as well be completed by the same artist. Once its finished, I'll have travelled approximately... 45,000kms (27963 miles) and 3 trips for one sleeve lol. I probably could have been a bit more efficient with time but eh, its just how its worked out and each trip has been amazing so no complaints here. And I intend to make a trip to the SFO convention one of these years ;)1 point

Cows smooze, people schmooze. Hard work and dedication to the craft always stands out in the end, while people seeking fame are generally recognized for what they are. I think it's okay that the masses are sometimes drawn to the less talented self promoters, not everyone deserves a great tattoo.1 point

I'm sure this has already been mentioned in the thread but HOLY SHIT i CANNOT WAIT for the monacled bowler hatted curly-mustachioed Tea-Drinking manhead tattoo to go away. I hope every dude or girl that gets one of those feels 10 time stupider in 10 years than anyone sporting desert chrome does now! What would possibly compel someone to get that shit tattooed on them I will never know. "Check out my tattoo of an imaginary, uptight, fey, rich guy who may, or may not have been an extra in the film Wild Wild West." ugh. WORST.1 point

Bridesmaids was filmed alot in my neighborhood. Movie reminded me of "the hangover" for women. Buuuutttt just as funny for guys. I ask because people here don't know corn about poop. I once worked with this fool. Actually ive worked with a handful but this one I never really cared for. This woman came tO the shop on my day off. Turns out she had a bob Roberts back piece. The fool had no idea who he was. Uggghhh there was a show that night and it just so happened I ran into her there. We strike up a conversation and we realize I worked at the shop with the dork who didn't know who bob Roberts was. She then showed me an amazing back piece AAAAAND her boobs. Moral of the story.....know your history kids. Knowledge gets you boobs.1 point -

Tattoo Cover Up Pictures, Before and After
Euchlid reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
I don't have any cover-ups on my body but I tattoo a hell of a lot of them. Most of the larger work that I do (bigger than 1/2 sleeve) usually incorporates some kind of cover-up. I started to make a point of NOT taking a 'before' picture. Sometimes I do, but I found that the cover-up requests got bigger and bigger the more cover-ups I showed. Covering a half sleeve sized tattoo with a full sleeve compromises the end product but I sometimes enjoy the challenge and the problem-solving aspect of it. This is one of the more tricky ones from last year or so, when I used to take 'before' photos: I got an email today asking if I could cover a full sleeve - with a sleeve.1 point -
