I had the chance to go to the Bay Area Convention of the Tattoo Arts today and I now consider myself spoiled silly. Backpieces and bodysuits! Not only was I able to purchase a copy of the impressive 2 vol. Bloodwork: Bodies collection, which documents some outstanding pieces, but I was also able to attend Horitomo's presentation on backpieces. I don't know about others who may have attended today but I found it very enlightening. Essentially addressing a variety of Horitomo's own beliefs on how a traditional backpiece evolved to it's current state since the Edo Period, his belief on traditional composition, what makes up a "completed" backpiece, the differences between pieces for men vs. women, even the traditional belief that the bacpiece should be the bearer's first tattoo prior to adding sleeves. In my own account this was the exact opposite of my own planning, where I'd started with my arms. Jill, had mentioned this to me, and there are many examples of this in Japanese tattoo magazines, but I always assumed it had to do with the traditional idea of hiding the tattoo behind clothing. It was then interesting to hear Horitomo giving examples of how adding sleeves first was potentially detrimental to the composition of background in an artistic composite. Even an artist's signature added to the tattoo, which was debated in another post was discussed. It was a great opportunity for me to look into the traditional Japanese tattoo mindset without having to question the authenticity of the source as there's so much "exoticism" sometimes applied. There's another seminar tomorrow and I'd recommend it. Besides it also comes with Horitomo's new book too. Bonus! Anyone else's thoughts about it today?7 points

I had the honor of getting a Peony tattooed by @Stewart Robson last night at SFO. What a great guy (and obviously world class artist)...awesome time talking with him. Amazing experience sitting there being tattooed while artist after artist came up to greet Stewart/Valerie and check out what they were doing. I was being tattooed by Stewart right next to Valerie tattooing a girl while watching Mike Rubendall and Henning Jorgensen tattoo about 10 feet away. Insane! If Stewart doesn't put something up, I'll try to get a good picture when it heals.5 points -
Someone just posted this on Facebook and I figured some of y'all might enjoy it. Ugh those dudes have some real shitty tattoos. They also said they chose the name "just because it sound cool and we're cool" I want to fucking punch them. I don't understand when it switched from liking music because it is good to liking a band because they look cool/are ironic. I don't care how fucking ironic it is to listen to a shitty band, they still suck dicks. I should note I've never listened to this band other than that video, and I didn't like what I heard. Their attitude towards making art is bullshit. "We don't try to evolve and do something different we just make the same thing we made before" Take your hipster accent (obviously not every european is a hipster but i can't help but think their accents helped them get popular here), your shitty ironic t-shirts and get fucked.2 points

Trying to pass well constructed and executed professional tattoos as his own, while still leaving a few of his kitchen concoctions there for people to see is laughable. There are not to many people that specialize in Realistic Black and Grey and badly drawn boomboxes with stars. Passing off other peoples work as his own is probably not necessary, when your clientele consists of those looking for an inexpensive tattoo that they can get in a mouldy apartment so the guy hustle up some rent. Seems like this guy and his clients are probably made for each other.2 points -
Besides the thievery and praying one of my 18 month old twin boys never get something from a piker like this, this shit is so under any talented artist it should't even be on his/her radar. This is some piker bullshit and not worth the keystrokes. Non of these "customers" are smart enough or willing to spend enough to get a real tattoo. So they are really not taking money out of your pocket. If anything these pikers will eventually learn something about tattoo culture, quit and become a paying customer. Every field has it's pikers. These guys are not on your radar and should not get under your skin. With respect, George2 points

As some of you know I visited San Francisco recently to get tattooed by Scott Sylvia, Tim Lehi and Grime. If you haven't seen it already you can check out my travelblog here: http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/blogs/iwar/232-oslo-san-francisco-travel-blog.html My Scott Sylvia piece is as good as healed now, so I thought I'd start by sharing that one. The rest will be posted here as soon as they are healed and I get decent pictures. All I have to take photos with is my iPhone, so please excuse the mediocre quality.1 point -

exactly, when you put your efforts into positive things and pursue the path to promote the good you do see then all this nonsense fades away. you'll also find yourself in a better mental state when you aren't getting distracted by the garbage that will continue no matter what laws, websites, or complaining can stop.1 point

When Rubendall was flipping through his art, I saw a Pushead print I've been chasing for YEARS. And he hasn't even framed it. The horror. The horror. Re: The Corbin episodes. Can't wait. I dropped off some old video of him to the VICE offices for use in the episodes and chatted with the producer about "what comes next". Not to give anything away without permission, but they HAVE shot footage for what could be season two. I had heard about it while getting tattooed earlier in the day; not sure Chris would have told me if I didn't mention it. But it will end up being iconic footage, and if they don't use it... I'll drive back to brooklyn and demand he at least leak it on the internet.1 point -
It's people like him who make is necessary to start having laws and licensing for tattoo shops and tattooers. If someone like him was faced with a possible say $10,000 fine for tattooing without a licence then maybe he'd weigh that against the maybe $100 he would make from the tattoo. The main problem is people like him do not realize that real tattooers put their entire life into their art and that is why they charge the prices they do. Would he try to do discount plumbing for people with no training? Probably not, and he'd probably be breaking the law by doing so if he did. Fuck this dude and every one like him. I hope he gets his hands broken.1 point

Ok fools, he put a photo up on his blog, so I suppose I'll share it here as well. Buffalo head on the shin, by Bailey H. Robinson. Shiny photo. There's a skull hiding under there, too, and will almost definitely add some stuff in a few months. Tatonka.1 point -
I like that picture...you are both laughing. It looks like a fun time. Its one of my favorite things about getting tattooed...that really unhibited feeling at the shop, off color jokes, pretty much nothings off limits to laugh and joke about...everyone's pretty equal with their ass hanging out getting tattooed at the shop.1 point

real "in the trenches" tattooing, that's what it's about. you never know what's going to come through the door, awesome. for smelly people, they either get an accidental splash of green soap in the neighboring area that is causing the odor or if thats not possible a little swipe of dettol across my mustache before the tattoo does the trick.1 point

MadeIndelible reacted to Lance for a topic
Paying for a tattoo with a credit card?! That's just weird to me. I don't know why, but it just feels odd. Paying with cash has just part of the process for me. You suck it up, cut down on spending elsewhere to save some cash, and after finally saving enough I get an awesome tattoo. Afterwards as I hand over the cash thinking, "hmm I could have vacationed in Hawaii with that. Eh, whatevs.". Seriously though, I'm so used to paying cash, I was actually surprised when I realized some shops actually do accept credit cards.1 point -
