Dumb Hipster Tattoos

Love away. I find them annoying. It's what people in my age group do; hate people younger than us and thinking their trends are stupid. And sure- I had said before that at some point people in this thread would get butthurt because something would hit too close to home. I ride a track bike. I LOVE my track bike. It's really light, was cheap and gets me where I'm going. I wear the same outfit literally every day. (black logo-less tshirt, jeans, new balance sneakers; when I dress in the morning I don't have to think about it; I just grab a clean shirt and pair of jeans and cut out the entire decision making process.) I have a beard. Some, if not most, of my tattoos make no sense. So sure, someone could call me a hipster. that's fine. As long as I'm washing my hair every day and not dressing like a total ironic douche, I don't mind. I still hate hipsters.7 points -
Occupy Wall Street
Avery Taylor and 5 others reacted to dari for a topic
The Occupy Wall Street movement has come up in another thread, but I thought it deserved it's own. I thought it might be interesting to post some of the images and quotes that have struck a cord in us, whether it's a picture or a video from a mainstream media source or any type of social media. My first contribution isn't uplifting or even current, but I believe these are relevant words from a master-6 points -

I would say that it is only within the last year that I have finally found myself, at the age of 38, in a job that I feel is the career I want to pursue. I don't think it is a coincidence that my desire to get full sleeve work is in response to that. I feel like I am old enough, ugly enough, and focussed enough to know that tattoos which will be occasionally visible to colleagues and 'customers' will lead people to make judgements but ultimately will not hurt my career. Much. Fascinating thread.3 points

Number 13 Tattoos. Anyone Else Got One?
Patriot Ink Tattoo and 2 others reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
I have 3 "13" tattoos. Each tattooed by Valerie on a different Friday 13. 2 of them are the same as the ones other guys at the shop have. That time I was walking through the Tenderloin in SF and that crazy-looking, face-sleeve wearing, South American, gang-banging motherfucker was fucking staring at me across the street... I bet it wasn't because he could see the three small number 13's, between the tattoos on my arms, under my shirt and jacket. I've never been mistaken for a member of a South American gang because of my tattoos. As a side note, friends of mine with finger tattoos and visible lettering have been asked, by airport security, about gang activity when visiting the States.3 points -

Tattoos and the workplace
Johnny and 2 others reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
I've known Matt for a good few years now and as much as I like him, I think it's a shame that he's becoming the 'spokesperson' for tattooed people. Part of me is pleased for him that he's found a way to make a living as a mostly respected academic/writer, even with visible tattoos. But I don't want a spokesperson, especially one who solely views the world from the halls of academe or maybe the fetish club. While I enjoy and agree with most of his writing, I can't help feeling I read it all somewhere before... maybe 15-20 years ago in TattooTime or International Tattoo Art when Shaw was editing. Ed Hardy already proved to the art world that tattooing wasn't just for sailors and whores. In an age of high-rating reality shows about tattooing with celebrity tattooers I don't think we need to justify tattooing to the 'mainstream' anymore. No matter how well written or researched it may be. Some of us want to take tattooing back underground, some of us want to take the high-profile ball and run with it. Whatever people do, it's gotta be more interesting than regurgitating the same tired articles. What's next? "Women can be tattooers too?" Yawn. As a side note, Mario Desa said (via twitter) recently "Those who call tattooing 'fine art' know nothing abut either."3 points -

I had my side line work done yesterday...so I experienced all kinds of new pain...ribs are really painful. Pelvic bone...PAINFUL. What was done on my butt hurt, not too bad though. Upper ribs under my arm was brutal. What was done on my stomach was crazy too...the whole thing hurt basically except the fat around my waist (first time ever I am glad I cant seem to lose the "love handles"). But the area by my nipple...excruciating. I seriously thought I might start crying. Cant wait to go back to have it colored. :D2 points

I was hoping Sarah McLachlan was going to pop-up at the end of that video, holding a Juggalo "Call or join online right now and you'll be set-up with a subscription to Tattoo Age on VBS and a link to Last Sparrow Tattoo Forum. Right now, there's a tattoo artist who's willing to help-your call says "I'm finally ready to pay for a decent tattoo""2 points

Within the last year I've had work done that is only covered by long sleeves. For years I have run a large business with a diverse base of employees. I've always told people that they should be careful when placing a tattoo on their body. I would point to the bottom of the sleeve of a polo shirt and say "from here UP is the safe zone". I also told them that I don't care about the location as long as they covered up in front of customers and the executives of our company. I also warned them that I was the exception and not the rule and that people judge you on appearance. It's a reality people who don't agree judge harshly. I had enough with that grind, left that company, and went to a smaller firm. I now have a full sleeve and the back of the other forearm is complete. I wear long sleeves every day and I work in Phoenix and on 120 degree days I'm wearing long sleeves. I'm a professional at work at home and around town I'm myself. Many times I've ran into people (customers, business partners) outside of the business environment, when they see my tattoos they are amazed that I have them. Some have tattoos of their own that they hide. A younger guy, in my office, came to me and said he wanted a sleeve. He's about 20 years old. I told him worry about your career FIRST. Secure your future then worry about a sleeve or any tattoos. I do think that established people are judged less harshly than younger individuals. At my age I can always blame it on my mid-life crisis!!!!2 points

Travel and shop choosing?

So to resurrect a thread.... Now getting serious about traveling to the UK to get some tattoos (currently looks like by Stewart, Duncan X, and possibly one more). Planning plane, hotel, etc...all very exciting. The thing I am wondering if any of you ran into was how do you send a deposit? I am lucky to live in NYC, with a lot of great artists within a subway ride away, so I always bring my deposits in person. Also might hop over to San Francisco possibly in January-February (work/funds depending).2 points -

It is actually unfortunate though a part of the online world and face-2-face world as well that people disappear. We were just thinking/talking the other night how people sign up and never interact and/or disappear from LST wishing people would feel more inclined to stay active and participate humbly. We all start as beginners in any process and sometimes stay in that process longer than others. Shit I've got some terrible tattoos though I love them. Some friends joke I "have more terrible tattoos than someone locked up their whole lives". That is part of learning. Some of the best teachers I've ever had were those who were patient with me as I try and grasp a foreign concept, theory, way of life, etc.. Shit I still ask Scott and others stupid tattoo questions or what I deem stupid but they stay patient with me and the fact of the matter is I want to learn as much I can not only in tattooing but life in general. The only thing I know is I know nothing and learning never ends. Good topic by the way......2 points

Full Back Piece Thread
Jennifer Stell and one other reacted to Ursula for a topic
Just came across this today. It's my man's back done by Jeff Rassier. It's almost done now, the picture is kind of old. Also can't wait to see that backpiece Stewart2 points -
Well, I've done 12 hours on my back in the past three days. Six the first day, then a day of rest, then six today. I went in with the mindset that the back is one of the most painful places to get tattooed, and specifically the love handles and ass (Valerie Vargas' posts re clients automatic reactions sunk in). Probably because of this I was a lot cleaner in the run-up to this week than for anything else I've done. Very little alcohol, lots and lots of sleep all week. The end result was that the first day actually felt OK, a lot better than I expected. To me it felt like towards the end it was beginning to bite more because of the time involved than because of the location. Today was a little harder, it started to get sore around lunchtime. I figure that whatever stock of endorphins I had built back up by resting yesterday just didn't go as far. At the four hour mark today I was feeling like throwing in the towel, but then Ching sat me up (I'd been lying on my stomach) and this totally pepped me up - it was weird, I was feeling nauseous but just the change of position made a huge difference. I actually felt like the last two hours were OK... Although then again I was also getting my upper back worked and I feel like around the shoulder blade was easier than lower down towards the love-handles / ass. In conclusion: I'm a convert to the no-drinking-in-the-run-up approach, and I reckon as much sleep as possible is important. The only other thing I came away with is that taking the day off between the two sessions felt like a really good idea. I have no doubt that going straight into it yesterday morning would have had me wanting to tap far earlier. My girlfriend has been watching anxiously, because she's got a pretty gruelling schedule planned for next year. Four sessions in two weeks in Japan. I think, after this week, that it is do-able. I feel like I could get tattooed next week (if I really had to).2 points

Tattoos and the workplace
Johnny reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
At work, when people ask why their tattoos will make their chances of employment/promotion more difficult, I tell them that they shouldn't get the tattoo. It's a fact of life that not everyone likes tattoos. Some people who don't like tattoos REALLY don't like them. Wether you think thats wrong or right is of no consequence to the way they feel. There are plenty of places on your body to get tattooed that are not visible even with short/no sleeves and shorts.1 point -

I am currently going to school to be a paramedic. My teachers tell me that my tattoos are going to make it hard for me to get a job. What I really don't understant is if your dying because of a loss of blood, or you have severe head trauma why you would care what I look like?1 point
