ChrisM - Many thanks. I too am a huge fan of the book and film, and Steiger is an inspired bit of casting. Henrik - I'm currently living on Anglesey, looking across at Snowdon. Very beautiful. Lochlan - Thank you for your welcome! I am living in deepest northern Wales, although I am actually a Londoner. I am getting work done by a not very well known female tattooer called Valerie Vargas at a little tattoo studio called Frith Street Tattoo. I am getting some tribal and a portrait of my dead dog (not really).6 points -

I was considering some of the ideas laid out in other threads on the board concerning social interaction and breakdown and started thinking about the idea of tribes. Tattooing and scarification were used to identify members of tribes that practice carries on today in more regimented settings (prison, the military, secret orders), but has that idea transcended those settings? For instance, board members seem to have a pretty strong idea of how a tattoo should look; we accept strangers who post that have tattoos that fit that criteria and 'give advice' to others that don't have those tattoos to get tattoos of a similar kind. From personal experience, I know that when I see people with the sort of tattooing I like (or deem 'quality'), I make inferences that the person is 'cool' or someone I'd talk to. Interaction on the board with strangers has proven that we share similar interests, even though we come from a variety of backgrounds and areas, to the point of meeting with out of town visitors. Is this a way of forming new 'tribes'? This is total jr. social anthropology on my part, so I realize I could be totally wrong about how tribes work.3 points

No, no.... When I was getting my back done by Jill, my wife was also getting a fairly large piece from Junii, so every time we'd go by Diamond Club, they'd ask to see the progress on my back. They kept laughing and saying, "Wait until she does just below your cheeks!" Then they told me that they stretch that area the Horitoshi way--with the client on his or her back, holding their leg behind the knee to stretch it. Take a moment to picture that, then be grateful that you get to lie on your stomach.3 points

My partner and I have tried recommending shops and artists to people according to what they say they want, but weve given up as they never get the tattoos or say theyll just go to the local shop.2 points -
@gougetheeyes unfortunately as @ThaliaCamille said it all kind of evens out. Our housing market is one of the most over inflated in the world, plus food is actually pretty expensive compared to say Japan and from what I've heard, The States as two examples. But working conditions are pretty decent and minimum wage is something like $14/$15 for services? but all depends on industry etc. Some industry minimums can be more - mining for example. @kylegrey (in my normal accent, although possibly strained to emphasise that Australianism) "Nah mate, shes fair dinkum, I wouldn't piss in ya pocket or have a lend of ya, thats as mean as cats piss mate!" ;) actually, it'd be more like this - "nahmateshesfairdinkumIwouldntpissinyapocketorhavealendofyathatdbemeansascatspiss!"2 points

Skirts, kilts, robes, loin cloths, gotcha! Ha ha, perhaps I can ask a nurse friend of mine to grab me one of those patient gowns that tie down the back :p Thanks all, It does make sense to call the actual shop to make sure what they prefer but they've been busy with the SF Convention coming up so thought I'd do some homework on the side. Bill and Junii huh? Is her backpiece by one of them? Is this the reason why she hasn't finished hers? Ha ha. Looney bin material? What are you saying? You mean it's not going to make me more appealing to SF FiDi women in power suits? C'mon I'm their dream date. The whole money and claws bit. Ha ha ;)2 points

Did I mention that the robe in question was fairly Lebowski-esque? And anyone that decides to tattoo his or her entire ass is already looney bin material. :)2 points

It is actually unfortunate though a part of the online world and face-2-face world as well that people disappear. We were just thinking/talking the other night how people sign up and never interact and/or disappear from LST wishing people would feel more inclined to stay active and participate humbly. We all start as beginners in any process and sometimes stay in that process longer than others. Shit I've got some terrible tattoos though I love them. Some friends joke I "have more terrible tattoos than someone locked up their whole lives". That is part of learning. Some of the best teachers I've ever had were those who were patient with me as I try and grasp a foreign concept, theory, way of life, etc.. Shit I still ask Scott and others stupid tattoo questions or what I deem stupid but they stay patient with me and the fact of the matter is I want to learn as much I can not only in tattooing but life in general. The only thing I know is I know nothing and learning never ends. Good topic by the way......1 point

first point - totally agree. second point - a couple months ago on the train this probably 10 year old black kid and his approx. 12 year old sister were having an argument two seats away from me about weather I looked hot or freaky. The boy thought I was hot and had been whistling at me which I thought was pretty funny. His sister was very adamant about thinking I looked freaky and that he was weird for liking someone like that. It was pretty damn amusing. It had nothing to do with their race, your comment just reminded me of it. Also, I thought Lil' Wayne was cool? I guess he's dropping in popularity these days? Either way his 'rebirth' album is awful.1 point

There was one rare occasion where I guess being tattooed worked in my favour in terms of the assumptions people make. A few years ago I was in the toilet of a nightclub I had never been to before, in a part of the city I would rarely visit. I was at a urinal at the far end of the room and it was about 3am. I turned around to head over to the sinks and then back out and found that about five guys had gathered, looking pretty pissed off with me. The guy in front said something to the effect of 'Yep, that's the guy - he arrested my brother, he's _____' and generally suggested I get a beating. I spread my hands and indicated my half sleeves (which is probably still a reasonable amount of coverage on show in Dublin- then at least), shook my head, and said 'Sure, I really look like a cop.' And rolled my eyes. They looked at each other and it was enough of a doubt placed in their minds that I was able to walk out of there while they were deciding.1 point

Different perspective, I may have mentioned before(?), but I won't get lots of black and gray/fine line work because of the Hispanic gang thing. My first tattoo was black and gray, but after that, I went with as much color as I could get with all my other tattoos. When I was in "Machete", I was cast because of my tattoos; it's another thing to look "the role" everyday ;)1 point -

Always tigers, roses, fudo myoo, Raijin & Fujin, japanese dragons, pre-1980s japanese bodysuits, daggers, skulls, pretty girls, well-drawn lettering, good black & grey portraits etc. But right now its old Japanese bodysuits with no animals or birds, just peonies, blossom or chrysanthemums and a large deity backpiece. - Blows my fucking mind.1 point -
