    Scottish tattoo history

I have been an observer of this forum for a few months now but this thread compelled me to register and actually post. I too have heard and read many time about how difficult Richard Pinch is supposed to be but my experience of him could not be further from that. I found him friendly and I could not be happier with the work he did on me. So much so that I will be back imminently for several more hours of his company as he he has drawn me an awesome fu dog that is soon to be on my back. I also think it is brilliant that if you really want to get tattooed by him you don't need to make an appointment months in advance. All you have to do is get up early...really early. I was outside his shop at about 7.15am the other day and went home as there was already so many people there waiting. Overly chatty he is not, but bloody good tattoos he does do! I know whats more important to me. Good forum by the way...

  2. What about non-tattooers selling all of us tattoo equipment? Some will speak strongly against those who don't tattoo owning shops and swear off ever giving them money, but then will make an order with a non-tattooer owned supplier and unknowingly act hypocritical. I think in tattooing these days, in my opinion, we need good people who care about the business and who bring something positive to the table of tattooing, tattooer or not(although tattooer preferred). I just came back from working at Frith Street Tattoo in London, I watched a bunch of very well known and respected tattooers work there in the last two weeks, not to mention the incredibly talented crew that are residents their. The owner, Dante, is not a tattooer, but he is a good human being and cares for his employees as if they were family. I am proud to say I worked there and as far as Dante(the owner) goes, I would take a bullet for him.

    Phoenix Tattoo

I think that's a decision you will need to make as it will be on you. How much do you care about remaining traditional and respecting cultures? I'm sure you can work with your chosen artist to create a badass chicken head if you wanted. My memory is fuzzy and could be wrong so someone correct me, but I think a Japanese/Chinese phoenix is a mixture of several specific creatures like a chimera. So if you change what's supposed to be cocks comb/pheasants head to an eagle then that might seem odd to some people. I'm sure most people wouldn't even notice though. That being said I want to add that you should remember there is actually a difference in meaning between an asian style phoenix (ho-o) and the phoenix in the western world. If it's the image you like sans KFC head, cool, but if you are trying to represent a certain mentality, meaning, blah, blah, blah to it, then make sure you get the right type of phoenix tattooed. I've heard/seen plenty of people with a Japanese style ho-o and their LA Ink sob story is actually refering to the Greek or Egyptian Phoenix not the east asian meaning. At that point I sigh, and imagine smacking them in the back of their head for not researching and reading up on mythology. Also to be honest I do favor traditional japanese work and cringed a lot during the 90's and early 2000's when I saw horible faux Japanese work walking around everywhere.

  9. thats real nice of you to say tim, thank you. the shop i worked at before Frith st was owned by a non tattooer and at the time, i left with a real sour taste in my mouth. i wasnt sure about dante since i didnt know him but all i heard was good things from well respected tattooers and really, i was stoked to work at frith st, even for the one day a week i was started on. immediately i realised that this man knew and cared about tattooing more than i did then and probably even now. He has been part of the tattooing 'scene' for many years now and well respected pillars of the scene call him friend. i'm proud to work there, to call him my boss and to be his friend. there's always an exception to the rule and as a shop i do feel we are one. I've been long trying to buy my tattoo supplies from either people i know care about tattooing and from tattooers themselves. everyday is an ethical matter in tattooing, every choice you make affects tattooing and i have learnt to pick my battles carefully so to speak

  14. Hello, I found this pretty cool stop motion video in three parts on youtube for a half sleeve 'nerd' tattoo described as follows: *I didn't want to just do a one-off thread, so thought to just title it 'Tattoos on Video' so other people might want to post similar videos, if they like. I am not sure, but I do not think it has any real 'how-to' applications to it. If so, apologies and please feel free to remove.

  15. @Jaycel Adkins, I probably feel the same way. I dont know that I am disturbed by someone like that as much as I dont understand it. I see and know a lot of tattooed people and see and know a lot of people who have a very non-mainstream style of dress but I dont often see and dont know anyone with the huge implant stuff. I mean, I see some strange piercings but those horns are certainly a statement. I like to think I am more and more open to differences the older I get but that level of modification baffles me. Maybe I am old enough to be accepting but too old to understand.

  16. Okay today I found a new favorite tattoo on myself. I forgot even getting this because it was just some little thing I got while I was getting a larger tattoo. On my leg it looks like the eagle and a panther shark are about to pounce on the little guy but he remains defiant till the last minute.

  17. I have met Mike a couple of times, and he was always really cool. About eight years ago I went to him about doing a religious black and grey sleeve based on an old art print that he had done a couple of years before. He told me that he wasn't doing that stuff anymore, and was focusing on Japanese style work. He was very cool about it, and he ended up tattooing a good friend of mine, but not me. In the Inked interview that he recently did he talked about having some clients that he has started doing that style of work on, and that he is glad to be doing it again. I suppose timing is everything. I also met Frank Romano at the Seattle convention a couple of years ago, and he is a wild dude. Very very funny, and he had some great stories. I have tried to add the link to the flash that I wanted. Hopefully it works.

Classy, classy guy. My dream would be to have a shop like that in my hometown. I sometimes wonder do you (mostly americans) know how lucky you are when you have that kinda artists around you? In your towns, where you can take a 15minute drive and be at the shop. Must be fucking amazing. You can easily book appointments when you have time. And if you miss it, have something else to do, fuck it, because the shop is so close, you can just book another appointment! And you can go and get like 2 hours work at a time if you want to. Fuck, I would have to save just for the trip for 3 months! Living the dream. Bastards...

  35. I've known Matt for a good few years now and as much as I like him, I think it's a shame that he's becoming the 'spokesperson' for tattooed people. Part of me is pleased for him that he's found a way to make a living as a mostly respected academic/writer, even with visible tattoos. But I don't want a spokesperson, especially one who solely views the world from the halls of academe or maybe the fetish club. While I enjoy and agree with most of his writing, I can't help feeling I read it all somewhere before... maybe 15-20 years ago in TattooTime or International Tattoo Art when Shaw was editing. Ed Hardy already proved to the art world that tattooing wasn't just for sailors and whores. In an age of high-rating reality shows about tattooing with celebrity tattooers I don't think we need to justify tattooing to the 'mainstream' anymore. No matter how well written or researched it may be. Some of us want to take tattooing back underground, some of us want to take the high-profile ball and run with it. Whatever people do, it's gotta be more interesting than regurgitating the same tired articles. What's next? "Women can be tattooers too?" Yawn. As a side note, Mario Desa said (via twitter) recently "Those who call tattooing 'fine art' know nothing abut either."

  38. I was just watching some of the videos on Stewart Robsons blog and of course hes in some of them and you can see his arms have some blackout work and for some reason i was watching the video and thinking that the blackout looks so much more intimidating then getting any other skull or scary object(cant think of anything else right now, its late!) tattooed on oneself.

  39. Every tattooer EVER has "ripped off" other tattooers. Actually every artist in the history of forever has ripped something off. Sailor Jerry wasn't the first person to put a banner on an anchor and call it a tattoo. All those images came from somewhere. Bob Roberts, Ed Hardy, Jerry, insert any tattooers name here all have done re-paints of other people's flash. I've done it your done it and now this dude with his painting has done it. He can ask for whatever he wants for his painting. It likely won't sell but that's just because no one know's who he is. It's not the best painting I've seen but man I've seen people who actually do tattoos who's painting are pure garbage and still they sell. The main point for me is this: make art if you are truly driven to make art. Be inspired by what strikes you. Take those things that inspire you and make them your own. And when you are finished your masterpiece ask whatever you want for it and hope it sells. If you stay with it eventually people will notice you for your talent and want to give you money. I'll finish by saying of all the 'art' I've made in the last ten years I have sold or traded far less then half of the things. As for the rest, I don't care if it's sold or not. I make things because I'm driven to, not for money. The money is just a really rad added bonus which hopefully one day it will be enough to support me.

  40. I don't think you should be apologizing for going to art school. Fancy or not. Nor should you have to explain yourself or your family situation. Playing the 'who's more oldschool' or 'who's more deserving' game is pointless.
