These are by Horitsune II from Osaka Japan. The first is on his pupil Miyazo and the second is on tattooer Rob Admiraal (The piece on the lady is one of Robs' clients/his work) ^^ So friggin good!!! I tried to find a better photo of Robs' backpiece, but good luck finding much if any of Horitsune IIs' work online. There is a series of videos though called 'Onko Chishin' and are well worth checking out, so do it ;)5 points -
Anybody Got A Good Explaination For This Question?
David Flores and 3 others reacted to dari for a topic
Once I was out to dinner, actually sitting at the counter in Chow where we had the last LST get together. I was with a girlfriend who was maybe 22, very cute, with huge iris' on her chest. An older man came up and said, "Can I ask you a question?" He never even said the word "tattoo," she yelled at him with great disgust, "no, go away, I'm trying to enjoy my dinner." At the time, I thought she was over re-acting, now I don't. She was young and hot, and this dirty old man wanted an excuse to talk to her and stare at her boobs. Tattoos are not invitations. On the other hand, on the last long flight I was on, I ended up talking to two people who will never, ever get tattooed, but they were so nice and so respectful that I even let one take pictures on her iphone for her son. Seriously. (And I'm sure he was horrified to learn that his mom was taking pictures of someone's tattoos on a plane for him.) I think it really depends on the person's motivation and their approach, and how burnt out the person is who's being asked. When I lived in SF, I was so tired of people asking me for spare change that I started telling every one of them that "change comes from within." As far as asking about cost, that super annoying. The last time I got tattoo questions was about 2 weeks ago at 7:30 am when I was pumping gas. He said something like "Blah, blah, blah, tattoo, blah, colorful, blah, nice, blah, how much did it cost?" I just want to stress that this was at 7:30 in the morning. I might often be more polite or helpful with my response, but I just said, "It was free." This was the wrong thing to say, because he then offered "My girlfriend's cousin's friend" (yes I'm serious) "is going to give me a whole half sleeve for only $200." "Oh yeah, where?" "At his house." "Dude, don't do that, go to a real shop." "No, he used to own his own shop, just doesn't want to deal with paying rent and all that anymore." And then I realized, it's 7 fucking thirty in the morning, why am I having this fucking conversation? "Okay, dude, good luck." What I'm saying, is that for me, I really try to take into consideration the sincerity of the person asking. I've also been on the snub end of the question side. At the beginning of a workshop with a visiting yoga superstar, I noticed tattoos on a guy in front of me for a couple of reasons. One being that he only had three, they were all the same bird in different flight positions, and the placement on his body was cool. The other reason was that they looked familiar, and I had a vague recollection of Scott drawing a similar bird, and I thought perhaps my husband had done them. I asked something like "Can I ask who did your tattoos?" He curtly and dismissively replied "We'll chat after class." Okay, nevermind, you don't seem like the kind of person I'd enjoy chatting with. I wish I had thrown in "Peace out, homo," but I had not yet heard the wise words of Sir Blaze A Lot.4 points -

The other day I was looking at Shiges' site and saw this photo I then realised that this client must have the same concerns and considerations for his artist as @hogg does ;) Shige to client "Lets get a photo of your chest piece and sleeves" Client to Shige "Just let me take off my pants"... lol. (yes I am aware that on shiges' site you can see that the same client was getting photos of his backpiece at the same time... but for the purposes of hilarity we won't acknowledge that)4 points -
Speaking of Miyazo ;) http://www.miyazo.com/welcome.html ^^ wow. just wow. In the series I posted above, Horistune talks about how important the background is, and how when a client comes to him with an idea its the first thing he thinks of. Well, I think he has passed on those ideals to Miyazo perfectly - every time I look at his backgrounds I could get lost for hours3 points

I was guilty of tattoo snobbery a few months ago. I rarely take the bus, but it was rainy and I didn't want to bike, so I'm heading north and this old timer starts chatting me up about my tattoos. I was brisk, answering but not being overtly chatty. Turns out he had work from Crazy (Philadelphia) Eddie and Jack Dracula. We ended up bullshitting, and by the time I realized I should be taking pics, it was my stop. I hope I see him again, and it's a lesson to not be so much of a prick, which I tend to be.2 points -

Today I got the other half of my back outlined and some shading. Next session *possibly* next month. The guy being tattooed next to me got a rad Buddha head on his neck from Hua. (The pic I've linked to was taken by Hua and is part of set on their open Facebook page. Some good shots of Belfast in general in there, murals etc) Relieved to be done for the week.2 points

At the risk of sounding like a creep my favortire part of going to tattoo conventions is being at the late night party that ends up turning into a shirtless one. As soon as one dude starts showing someone his back piece or chest it ends up in everyone following suit. I've gotten to see a lot of amazing tattoos I'd never have seen otherwise. That dinner was a blast. Everyone on the board needs to move to california so we can have massive home town buffet dinners. Im sure everyone in the restaurant was stoked to see a bunch of people pulling up their shirts.2 points -
I see a lot of old men where I live with old tattoos. I've been to chicken to talk to any of them. The other day a guy came into my store with an old green hot stuff, it was awesome. Shoulda asked him about it. The most offensive thing I think is when people ask me how much my tattoos cost. a)none of your business how much money I've put into my tattoos. b)my fiancé is a tattooer so I often get good deals or free tattoos or trade artwork for tattoos so I don't want to tell someone 'oh i paid $100' when I know they'd have to pay double or triple if they just walked into a shop. c) if you love a certain artists and care about getting a good tattoo it shouldn't matter. It especially makes me mad when someone's like oh where do you get tattooed and then they go "oh i heard that place was really expansive, i only paid $25 for this one" Yeah you paid $25 and it fucking looks like it bro. The reason this tattoo cost me $600 is because it was done by a respected artists who's put years into his trade, you paid some asshole who knows nothing about tattooing or art to scrawl your baby's name across your wrist, and it's upside down. Basically, I just hate people and I don't like being talked to by strangers. I wish I had more run ins with people like Hogg and his cab driver.2 points

I'm the guy who often approaches tattooed people and asks who did their work. Sorry! I always try to make sure that my tattoos are showing when I do ask so at least there's a chance they won't think I'm a total asshole. Case in point: I just spent the first half of the day with my daughter at Fisherman's Wharf, and I saw a guy with a really awesome hannya on his calf. I asked him who did it and he said, "A guy in London named Alex Binnie." I replied, "Oh, at Into You!" I think I surprised him. He went on to say that London has so many great tattooers now, and I asked him if he knew of @Stewart Robson and @Valerie Vargas. He said, "I'm a cab driver in London--I drive them to Frith Street all the time!" Small world, and I'm glad I asked him about his tattoos.2 points

Wow, thanks everyone! We're in the middle of major home construction, my house actually got lifted up 15 or so feet off the ground for my birthday. Right this minute, there's a mini excavator digging down even further for the fittings for the new foundation. We were out for a few nights, including my birthday when we went to Gather, but we're now back and everything's re-hooked up. Cable/Internet guy just left 30 minutes ago. Having no internet or tv for 10 days was interesting, but I'm hoping not to do it again anytime soon. Love you all!1 point

Day before yesterday I had a weird urge to make a curry from scratch. I had a lot of time on my hands and I figured that seeing as I had the day off I might as well spend some time cooking a proper dinner for my other half, seeing as its usual me that benefits from her culinary skills (and rarely the other way around). Anyway, I used a Jamie Oliver recipe. I find him increasingly annoying and implausible as a human being, but for some reason his recipes make sense to me whereas when I crack open practically every other cookbook I see something that baffles me. Anyway - 'Peter's lamb curry' (This is supposed to serve 8 according to the instructions. Perhaps 8 midgets or small children, but at any rate... I think more like 4-6 people. We froze the surplus) GENERAL INGREDIENTS 2 tbs butter 2 14oz cans of chopped tomatoes 1 cup stock or water 3 1/2lb of lamb, diced 1 handful of chopped mint and cilantro/coriander 1 cup plain yogurt salt and freshly ground pepper lime juice to taste FOR THE CURRY PASTE 2 inches fresh ginger, peeled 2 tennis-ball sized red onions, peeled 10 cloves garlic, peeled 2 fresh chillies, with seeds 1 bunch cilantro/coriander FOR THE 'HOT AND FRAGRANT' SPICE RUB 2 tbs fennel seeds 2 tbs cummin seeds 2 tbs coriander seeds 1/2 tbs fenugreek seeds 1/2 tbs black peppercorns 1 clove 2 cardamom pods 1/2 a cinnamon stick salt and freshly ground black pepper Lightly toast all the ingredients for the rub in a pan over a gentle heat for the rub. Then I put it in a ziplock bag and smashed the hell out of it with a rolling pin to crush it up real fine. There may be a more intelligent way to do this, but I enjoyed the violence of it. Preheat oven to 170 degrees (not sure what that is in farenheit). Chop the paste ingredients and add the rub powder. The recipe calls for adding the rub and paste ingredients to a food processor and making a puree. To be honest I just mashed it up a little following a fine chopping and chanced my arm with that, adding some oil and heating gently. Then 'In a large casserole dish, fry the curry paste mixture with the butter until golden, stirring regularly. Add tomatoes, stock or water and bring to the boil. Cover with foil and place in the oven for 1 1/2 hours to let the flavors intensify. This is the basic curry sauce'. When the time has elapsed, the lamb is fried in olive oil and then basically you put that in with the curry sauce, mix, and allow it to simmer on a hot plate until the lamb is tender (an hour+ probably). Then to serve you mix a portion with the yoghurt, squeeze in some lime, chuck some coriander/cilantro and mint on top and serve with rice or naan bread. Slow, but relatively painless. Anyone got any other indian / curry recipes?1 point -

When someone asks me what my tattoos mean I say "nothing. They don't mean anything I just liked it". It makes me kind of mad because even if they did mean something, it would probably be something very personal to me which means it's none of their god damn business in the first place. What if my tattoo symbolized when my baby died or I got attacked and lived or my house burnt down. If any of that had happened to me I wouldn't want to talk to strangers about it. I also get very very angry when strangers grab my arm to see a tattoo. I do not understand why anyone thinks it's appropriate to touch someone they don't know. I had a waiter do it once and I almost left the restaurant. When people ask about where I got them done and they do it nicely I will tell them because I like to give my friends business. You never know who's going to turn into a regular customer. My mom always says shit like "you did it to yourself and people are just curious" and I usually say something like "well fat people did it to themselves and I'm not gonna go grab their gut and ask what the meaning behind their food addiction is, or how they could do that to their body". In the end I usually end up wearing clothes that show as little as possible. Even on the hottest days in Florida I generally wear long pants and a shirt to my elbows. It's sad that a young woman can't walk around with tattoos showing and not get yelled at by guys in cars.1 point

American culture is in a super dangerous spot right now. Watered down, androgynous, over exposed, whored out, etc, etc. I have ZERO TIME for people who can't just be themselves. His work is ok, he's probably a nice guy, but I'd rather get tattooed by someone who doesn't give a fuck about what they're wearing. Contrived motherfuckers all over the place these days.1 point -

All of the above! ALso: The healthier you are the more prepared your body is for what's about to happen to it. Try not to come in hungover, get a decent nights sleep, eat a good breakfast, and lunch, essentially come in on a full stomach, by hydrated, and be relaxed as much as you can. I've been told that exfoliating the are you are going to get tattooed for about a week before hand helps greatly with the healing but that's more of a suggestion. Try to keep an open mind. Tattooers are professionals(for the most part, but not always so do your homework!). We have a wealth of knowledge we can bring to bare at any time for you, so take advantage of that. You will get a great tattoo. A tattooer who cares won;t talk you out of your idea, but might help you do it in a way that transcends your personal whims and trends, and will age gracefully, and compliment you as a person. Though it may be somewhat different than what you initially had in your head. Try to be a little malleable, and trust your tattooer. Try not to be some emotionally attached to every single detail. Remember: you aren't thinking like a tattooer. You think like a person who likes certain images and is used to seeing things on t-shirts, computer screens, and prints. Sometimes things don;t work in skin and we try like hell to make things work the best for you. Try to remember that as much as tattooing has become a main stream product for most clients, it's still a hand made craft to us. If you are expecting hospital levels of sterility, Professional attitudes and expert technique then see us, not just treat us, but SEE us as professional craftsmen/women. Most of us have your best interest at heart because we can and do see the big picture. We are looking at your tattoo in our heads 10 years into the future. At least. We just want to do a nice tattoo for you. So when a tattooer explains why an idea is too complicated at a certain size, or why there is too much clutter, or that outlining it pink may not be the best idea, pay heed to that. You are hearing the educated opinion of a craftsman. If you want a tattoo, don;t let your significant other try to do all the talking. Be plain, and straightforward with the things you want out of your tattoo. The less we have to guess, the fast we can get on the same wave length and make you happy. If you are on vacation and you plan on things like tanning, going to the beach, strenuous activities, swimming, hot tubs, etc. Plan to get your tattoo at the ass end of your vacation so there is less interference with healing(and we can't tattoo sun burned skin so take care of it!), but try to get to the shop at the beginning of your vacation to set the appointment up, or if possible call ahead. Many shops can accommodate walk in's at most times, but since you have a limited time, try your hardest to think ahead. Rush jobs at the last second may not be ideal especially if you want something more involved than a single sitting, quick tattoo. Avoid food that makes you fart before the tattoo. No one wants be sniffing your pooh ghosts while they work. Hope some of this helps.1 point

i'm also not a tattoo artist but here's my two cents (if they value at anything) ALWAYS TIP! sorry, but i'm a firm believer in this. there's a lot more that goes into a tattoo than just time, and non of it is free. don't be a jerk to the artist. yes, you comissioned them to create a piece for you, but that doesn't mean you get to be an asshole. if there is a difference in design or ideas, talk it out. if you didn't supply any ideas, then don't be a jerk when the design your artist comes up with is something different than what you expected. if an artist has gone up and out of their way, then show your appreciation. i brought cupcakes when i visited the guys at CTC because Nick and Mario offered to help with suggestions of places, directions, and just a place where i could hang out (considering i was traveling alone, and spending most of my time by myself). i thought that was really nice and generous considering i was a stranger. i always try to sit still, only really talk when the artist feels comfortable talking (i'm a pretty quiet person most of the time, except online), and i ALWAYS shower before getting tattooed (though i do sweat a lot and can get kind of stinky : / ). i also get gassy when i'm nervous, but that's another story...1 point
