    One Year Live for LST!

Today, September twenty-first marks the one year birthday that LST has been live! What started as a thought and some talk amongst friends for some months turned to a dinner meeting to buying a domain name to one month of building content, then going live has turned into one year later with all of you........who would've thought! The site has grown and new features continue to be thought about and how we can make this relationship between tattooing and the internet a better, more positive, & productive one as it is a relationship here to stay. As Scott has said, "the internet is the new tattoo shop waiting room". So lets make the tattoo shop internet waiting room better than what has been available...... We hope you will continue to support good tattooers and good shops. Because this is foundational! Once you find a good tattooer throw them your idea and let them work their magic....they are the artist and know variables that will make it work and not work so trust them. Shopping around for the cheapest price is not going to give you the best tattoo and may even end up costing more in the end (laser removal, cover-up, etc). LST is here to help and entertain.....the site would not be what it is without all of you, LSTers, so thank you!! I would lastly like to thank The Sylvia's and the Vong-Wright's for being a part of this! To many more years to come.....welcome and thank you LSTers!!!

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

@jade1955 - dude, that Dietzel piece from Chad is gorgeous. How long did it take him? (guessing 20mins/half an hour? haha) and your lady got some beautiful work also, very jealous! How did your appointment go today? @Tim Burke - that wolf is tough, nicely done I finally got photos of the rest of what I had done in Kyoto, not the best lighting but better than nothing for now :) two more sessions should finish it up me thinks ^^Sorry for the crappy photo but I really like these finger waves and wind bar

  10. Yeah, you guys are pretty cool ;) Seriously though, thanks to everyone who set the forum up, and for everyone that contributes and makes LST what it is. Wish I was in the bay area to actually meet peeps, but alas, Australia is a tad far. One day though... thinking I might have to make a trip to the San Diego convention in the near future... Here's to the next year and all that follow!

    First tattoo

My first tattoo was some kanji. Yes, I can admit it lol. It would have been 12 years ago and I got this in a local biker shop near where I grew up. The place was a classic walk in shop. Flash covering the walls (not the best flash but everything they needed for their clientele) The guys in there where rough as guts, but to their credit the shop was pretty clean... even if they where smoking up a storm in there. I had got it thinking it meant "Good Luck" or "Good Fortune"... I was wrong... (kinda) As most kids are, I was stoked with it and went around showing my friends and all was going well until I showed my chinese friend Alex. He asked "What's that say?" to which I replied "Good fortune", to which he simply replied "No it isn't." and starts laughing until he's almost in tears. I asked him what it meant and he refused to tell me. He said "if you went and got a tattoo without doing the research then you can live with it". Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu At the time I worked night shift in a internet cafe/online gaming centre which was rarely busy, so for the next 3 nights straight all I did was try and find out want it meant. That and trying to convince Alex to tell me. Third night, it's 4am and I am loosing my shit. I could find one or the other character but not the two together. (I admit I probably wasn't looking on the best sites but eh). Anyway, its 4am and this cafe was below a few English language schools in the Brisbane CBD. There weren't may people in there but I noticed that there was one asian guy sitting playing Counter Strike so I walked up, tapped him on the shoulder and just said "excuse me, are you chinese?". Poor dude shit himself (not literally) and cautiously answered "y...yes". "Awesome!", I pulled out the chair next to him, sat down and said "whats this say?" He breathed a sigh of relief, smiled and tried to figure out how to explain it to me. My heart was in my throat thinking the worst all I could think was this is going to be bad - Alex was laughing so hard its going to be really really bad... The young chinese guy looked up and said "it means 'Better Life'... its a really good symbol. we say it at new year and for luck". My response was "so its a good symbol? its ok??" he smiled and nodded. I was cheering to say the least. I gave him his time for free on the machines, and then went upstairs to see Alex who was working in another shop. And told him what I'd just been told. He looked at me and said "I know. I just wanted you to shit yourself for a little while until you learnt your lesson" So kids what have we learnt? Your chinese friends can be real assholes sometimes ;)

  16. Oh man, getting tattooed by Zuck was definitely one of the best tattoo experiences I've had. All-around super awesome guy. I'm really excited to be starting my back with him in November. I don't have a picture of it, but I also got a really awesome rose from Tomek who was guesting at Name Brand. He's also a really rad dude and enjoyable to get tattooed by.

wasn't in town long enough to take healed photos at the shop - this one was taken here at home. i'll be in town for the SFO show again this year and plan on stopping by blackheart so scott can get some decent healed pics...

  25. I was just watching some of the videos on Stewart Robsons blog and of course hes in some of them and you can see his arms have some blackout work and for some reason i was watching the video and thinking that the blackout looks so much more intimidating then getting any other skull or scary object(cant think of anything else right now, its late!) tattooed on oneself.

  30. Oh man...I have a coworker who has four tattoos (that I've seen) of pretentious Latin phrases in a Roman font--all upside down. Two on his forearms, one on each foot, and I'm sure a few more that I've not had the pleasure of seeing. Homeboy's starting to look a little "Memento." I don't know why shit like that gets me so heated--as my wife pointed out, they're not my tattoos, so I don't have to like them--but god damn! It just makes me think that he doesn't actually like tattoos. /rant

  33. I never mentioned anything about 'filler'. With large sale tattooing (particularly Japanese style) there isn't any 'filler'. The background is an important part of the design and certainly not an afterthought. Good tattooers will understand how the body can be divided into 'panels'. Then those panels can be joined together. Literally like a suit. Anyone thinking about getting large Japanese tattoos should check out Taki's book "Bushido", you can buy it pretty much anywhere. It's not too expensive and really informative. If you are feeling cheap, most public libraries have it.

    General Movie Thread

I think you are correct. I watched it this afternoon and thought it was really good. Up there with "Heat" and "Collateral" if you are into Michael Mann style movies, I think you can get into this one, definitely not "Fast and Furious."

Yes... I wanted a phoenix but I don't like chicken face (its cool, but not for me), so I asked Thomas to do mine and I am VERY happy. I love the all seeing eye even if they pop up in tattoos all the damn time....its a pretty universal image. http://thomashooper.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/eisen-flower-thomas-hooper-tattooing-014-july-21-2011.jpg?w=740&h=1110

  43. Then you've come to the wrong place. As stated in the Tattoo Newbie Guidelines thread: Do not start threads asking about specific tattooing equipment or techniques, LST is not here to teach anyone how to tattoo. Ask your own tattooer, the next time you are getting tattooed. Maybe they'll answer you, maybe they won't. Do not start threads regarding closely guarded trade secrets - this will keep LST a much more welcoming place for everyone, tattooers and enthusiasts alike. Do not start threads asking questions about "breaking into the business" of tattooing. If you do see threads like that, flag them for mods and try to ignore them until they can be deleted. We want LST to be a place that artists feel welcome, too, and those types of threads do nothing to foster that type of environment. Thanks.

  45. a bartender friend asked me to tattoo a mustache on her finger and her eyes got all big like it was such a great idea. so i got real excited and said "i gotta better idea, why dont we tattoo the words 'played out' on your finger instead"? she got mad but she also never got the tattoo done.

  46. Okay Dari you asked:) The skulls turned out alright in the end, but the yin-yang bear claw gave me no leeway. It just bums me out cuz that guy is out there, super happy with it, telling people who he got it from and it's awful. I sacrificed my integrity for the almighty dollar. Which raises a good question, when a client is so unwilling to let you make something better, should you just send them down the road? Or is that the one you just do to pay the bills? I have a great clientele, but I'm not close to the point where I can pick and choose what I want to do either. Insight?

  48. it's not so much that i hate it but i just don't get why so many young girls give me the ol' 'i want it facing ME...it's about ME' when doing their little wrist tattoos. now i just say 'cool, so you want it upside down then? ok'. hahaha

  49. hyena, i also try to just get a "zen" mindset going...focus on the actual craft and work of what i'm doing and not worry about the design or the money. and keep the smiles and banter going, do a nice tattoo and pay the bills. some people might not want to hear that...they want to think we always just dive in with our artistic expression blah-blah-blah and put our soul into every tattoo...haha...
