  5. Oh man...I have a coworker who has four tattoos (that I've seen) of pretentious Latin phrases in a Roman font--all upside down. Two on his forearms, one on each foot, and I'm sure a few more that I've not had the pleasure of seeing. Homeboy's starting to look a little "Memento." I don't know why shit like that gets me so heated--as my wife pointed out, they're not my tattoos, so I don't have to like them--but god damn! It just makes me think that he doesn't actually like tattoos. /rant

  10. "Half bodysuit"? You mean like half, vertically? Right side tattooed, left side empty? That's not a bodysuit, it's a terrible idea. If you want a bodysuit, get it from one tattooer, or 'family' of tattooers. Mostly you don't get to plan it. You have an idea of what you want where but it may be that the relative proportions of animals/flowers will be fucked up. Take your tattooers advice. Your tattoos will be better for it. If you want a body full of Japanese style tattoos from different tattooers, just start with one guy/girl and get a bit at a time finished then move on. It won't be a bodysuit, but you'll be covered in tattoos. If you go to good tattooers and choose well, they will be sympathetic to each other's styles and choices. Once you start with a good tattooer, you'll notice more and more options and subject that are suitable or that appeal to you. Don't worry if you don't have it all planned out. But really you should start by taking to tattooers who you will get tattooed by. In person or by calling the places they work at is usually more informative than via the internet. Remember that good tattooers think about this stuff all the time. Not just on their downtime in the evenings, but all day, every day. So they will probably have some neat problem-solving tricks and advice. Good luck.

    Phoenix Tattoo

Yes... I wanted a phoenix but I don't like chicken face (its cool, but not for me), so I asked Thomas to do mine and I am VERY happy. I love the all seeing eye even if they pop up in tattoos all the damn time....its a pretty universal image. http://thomashooper.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/eisen-flower-thomas-hooper-tattooing-014-july-21-2011.jpg?w=740&h=1110

  31. UPDATE: We're too broke to fly to the out-of-town wedding, so we'll be at the convention, where we'll be too broke to get tattooed, but at least we'll get to meet some folks. I'll also get to pick up my copy of the new Bloodwork Bodies book!

  32. I never mentioned anything about 'filler'. With large sale tattooing (particularly Japanese style) there isn't any 'filler'. The background is an important part of the design and certainly not an afterthought. Good tattooers will understand how the body can be divided into 'panels'. Then those panels can be joined together. Literally like a suit. Anyone thinking about getting large Japanese tattoos should check out Taki's book "Bushido", you can buy it pretty much anywhere. It's not too expensive and really informative. If you are feeling cheap, most public libraries have it.

    Planning a big tattoo(s)

@Stewart Robson I know what you mean about half a bodysuit. I guess I should not have called it that. You are right in what you said basically just a lot of Japanese tattoos that are tied together with filler. I guess where I should start is finding a tattooer that I want to start with. I get tied up with foolish details all the time, this may be one of those times.

  42. Oh, man. This hits close to home for me! I have a few spots left open: front of both thighs, one knee cap, and behind both knees (fun!). I already have plans for most of those spots, but then what? I have room for some small pieces down on my calves, but not much. I guess I could jam some things in on my torso, but I kinda like it how it is. I find myself living vicariously through others now, and offering (at times unsolicited) advice on what they should get and from whom.

  44. I guess there are unwritten rules in the industry, and for me, to many of them are about "respect". Lots of artists who have been working in the industry for 20 + years are covered in tattoos, but I would not let them near me with a needle, even though they are well respected. Some of the newcomers who put out amazing work have little tattoos, but receive little respect from the industry because of how long they have been around. The average customer does not hang around forums like this, they come in off the street looking for something "nice" from the flash. I do not think they care how long the artist has been around, how tattooed they are, who sponsored them etc. For them its about the "experience" .My wife is about to start her apprenticeship, and has only 1 tattoo. She wants more, but is cautious by nature, so when she knows what she wants, and who by, she will undoubtedly get more. But the artist she will be working under was happy that she had only 1 tattoo, so that she knew what it felt like. He was more interested in her artistic ability, which again, is what the average Joe is concerned about. So for me the answer is that I care more about the tattoo they are putting on me than the tattoos they have.

  45. I agree that lip tattoos are a joke and a pain. But i dont mind them as much since Dan Jackson showed me a trick. have the customer flip his own lip tight over a toung depresser. easier surrface to work with. and hammer it in.

  47. I've had an absolute rash of people lately who want nothing more than to narrate themselves with seemingly useless phrases and quotes. No flow, lousy font type and placed in awkward areas. We have one fake rapture and now the whole damn tattoo world needs to come in and get a bible verse (or 12) just in case the next one isn't a fire drill. I feel better now, thanks.

    Lady Heads

lately i have been really into how owen jensen, joe lieber, bert grimm ect. used to draw women. chubby and sort of off. it has a stripped down visceral quality to it. i really like the more fancy stuff everyone above has been doing as well but for some reason the older style stuff really speaks to me.

  49. Thanks Dari, tim Hendricks does some of my favorite rose tattoos plus other great tattoos! I just came across this blog with some great tattoos and tattooers plus some laughs: Chicago Tattoo Company Nick Colella and Mario Desa are on LastSparrowTattoo.com and have been contributing some great stuff that you can find in the forums or hit them up on their profiles. Would love for both of them as well as the others on the Chicago Tattoo blog to do some blogging nd pictures here! What do you say Mario and Nick?!?
