  1. My "official" opinion is to deride and distance myself from it. As hard as I may try not to, I think it's cool. But there are a hell of a lot of things I think are cool that shouldn't be (and aren't) filmed, let alone uploaded to YouTube.

  2. It went unnoticed because there's so much on this forum to keep one busy for days, but I wanted to give a shout out to LST for their one year anniversary last month. Thank you for a great forum and a great distraction from work. Here's to many more years of Last Sparrow Tattoo!!! :)

  3. I wasn't going to post these until it was completed, but I thought "fuck it, why not" and now you guys can see how the cover up progresses  These are the best photos I could get after the first day in Kyoto (6hrs) I still have to get photos of the second day, which completed all the background on the upper arm. Everything is now nearly healed so I'll get some new ones soonish. Apologies for the dodgy photography but I'm pretty sure I was still vibrating haha

  4. it's the wearer's tattoo. if they're unhappy with the tattooer who started it, they have every right to have someone else finish it. if it happened to me, i'd probably be bummed for a minute and wonder why they didn't want me to finish it, but you move on. you can't be attached to every one you do.

  5. He's not a prison tattooer. The person getting the tattoo is not a con. Prison tattooers do not have the luxury of wandering around shops or finding disgarded VCRs, when gathering parts to build their machines. It's tattooed in a park. I assume Scott Cambell is not using prison type pigment. It dosn't look like a prison tattoo. But it does look like a load of pretentious tosh. Watching a tattooing sequence from the "The Mark of Cain" is far more interesting.

Thinking about making a week trip soon out there to get tattooed anyways (not sure who yet). Knowing that a lot of you guys/gals live in the area, any suggestions/tips/warnings?

    Should I move to Cali?

why not move to Oakland instead of SF? way cheaper and just a hop skip and a jump away from the city. i suppose it also depends on if you have a car or not, but i wouldn't trade living in the east bay for SF. then again, i'm east bay born and raised.

  16. Who the fuck is paying this dude $300 an hour? He is a good tattooer, but what the fuck. I guess that tattooing Sponge Bob Squarepants on famous people gets you a lot further in this world than it should. I don't want to be too much of a douche-bag about this, but I just don't get it. For all I know the guy may donate 90% of his money to charity. As far as the video goes I don't care much either way. I do not have any homemade tattoos, but I usually like the way that they look. I like the simplicity, and the roughness of them. What I don't like is poorly executed "professional" tattoos. Usually when someone is getting a homemade tattoo it is a memory that they are looking for, and not a great holy shit that is beautiful piece of artwork. When I see someone with a bad tattoo that they paid for then I feel like they were cheated, and that bugs me. Most people trust that if the city you live in felt confident enough to give someone a business license then that someone must be reasonably good at their job. The one thing about the video that I don't care for is the tattoo itself. I don't feel that it captures the rawness of a homemade tattoo or the quality of a professional tattoo. To me it comes across as an exercise in arrogance. But as the old saying goes "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one".

  18. I find myself feeling the same way about a lot of Scott Campbell-related things. The fact that he charges $300 an hour is insane to me, but then again, he doesn't seem to be hurting for business, so I guess he wins. I'd read a few years back that he had a $1000 minimum, but I'm not sure that was true. Speaking of money to burn, he's created several pieces of art using sheets of US currency. Seems gauche to me, but again, I read about it in numerous places, so he's getting the press he wanted. He also did artwork for Camel Cigarettes, which is not that cool to me, but seemed to garner him a lot of notoriety. And while part of me thinks that he's an asshole for making this video--and tattooing someone on a nasty ass bench under conditions that would shock a Tattoo School graduate--another part of me is very impressed with the end product. And that's something I can say about many of his tattoos: they're good. Really good.

  20. This is why I always ask people who want a tattoo "finished" who started the tattoo. In one case the girl couldn't locate the artist that had started a piece on her, because the shop he worked at no longer existed. When she told me his name, I actually had his business card in my back pocket for his new shop and he was able to finish the tattoo. The tattoo was all lined just needed to be shaded in so it would have been the easy to just have one of the guys finish it but not the right thing to do especially to a guy that was cool to me. It was that situation that taught me to ask because I figured the customer might not think to in most cases.

  26. Just writing this from the ryokan Im staying in while in Japan. A bit of a movable feast of tattooing-related holiday stuff over the past week.... Also laying the ground for some work next year. My girlfriend has been accepted by Shige as a client and will start her backpiece next year - amazing stuff, and I was slightly star-struck when Shige walked in the door of Yellow Blaze for her appointment. As she is planning a return visit to begin around this time next year, and because I know the dates we will be back over the next while (roughly), Im planning my own work around that. I am going to try and work in a few small pieces while when we are over next, and to that end I called into Harizanmai Tattoo in Kyoto today and spoke briefly with Gakkin about a piece next year. Also took in Horyioshi III museum in Yokohama and met his son and successor smoking nonchalantly at reception. Awesome trip so far!

    First tattoo

First tattoo was "RISE ABOVE" on my ankles. It was done by a Sureño who worked in the Applebee's kitchen while I was a host. Its obviously a Black Flag tattoo. I was also wearing a Black Flag shirt. I was 17 and stupid. Oh, it was in his studio apartment and he smoked the biggest fucking joint I have ever seen outside of the Pantera Videos before he started as well. I mean, if you are going to get a Black Flag tattoo... thats how it should be done.

    Milton Zeis project

we are still working away. research done for the most part. we have been writing almost every day. trying to fine tune everything. i want to have the books in my hand by jan so we can take them to the slc convention if all goes as planned. so far this process has been much slower than i expected so we will see. the website is under construction right now and we will have pre order available soon. looks like first 200 will get a limited print plus some other goodies. we have a video promo in the works as well. we were able to locate the game show footage from 1963 when Zeis was on to tell the truth.

I'll second Theo Mindell as one of the top lady-headers. I'll probably end up with one from him sometime soon. Also, I didn't see Cris Cleen mentioned in here, but I love his ladies. ALSO, that Dietzel flash on the last page is soooooo good.

  33. I recently had a young lady make fun of the awesome eagle on my chest. She also said that people with tattoos just get them to make up for their lack of personality. I told her to get the fuck out of my apartment.
