Well, it's been on me for two days now and is healing nicely. I love it! My camera over saturates red for some reason, so the red looks much better in person. sorry about the hairy legs :p6 points

Trash Polka?

i was riding the tram the other day with a guy who had two full sleeves of this sort of thing. i think it looks good if the style is adhered to for the whole body, while it is not my thing and i did sit there being very critical of it in my own head. i was thinking things like, that red will never hold up, but he did have a portrait of a womans face in the work that did look quite nice in a technically well done way, and i am of the belief that all tattoos are going to look like complete shit in the future anyway. i try not to bash the work of other's who styles i dislike, because opinions are like assholes. i really don't like noon's work, but i shared an apartment with him and his son in new york for a few days, years ago, and he is a nice guy.3 points -

My personal problem with this stuff is that it doesn't deal with or derive from the basic motivations of humans or society. All the long-lasting tattoo imagery addresses or springs from some basic element of humanity. Which is why they've lasted a long time. My opinion is that this style of work (trash polka et al) is created with the main motivation to stand out from the crowd or be 'different'. The drive to be original, different or special, is fundamentally flawed and certainly short-lived. If tattoo designs derive from deep-rooted human drives and archetypes it's pretty much impossible for the concept to become dated. The execution is a different matter. In my opinion all the best tattoo imagery comes from or symbolises basic human drives, or the needs of humans in society. Skulls, pin-ups, powerful animals, flowers, hearts, religious imagery, daggers etc, etc. Most of the flash or portfolios (including tribal) in a decent tattoo shop will succinctly encompass the interesting bits of the human experience. That's why the work posted in this thread rings hollow for me, regardless of the difficulty of the application.3 points -

Scott's a damn nice guy; we had a chat about a fairly obscure subject back in 99 or 2000, and when I emailed him about the appointment he told me that my name sounded familiar, so he googled me; then, realizing he knew me, referenced the conversation from 11 years ago. Good people. I'll ask him if he's working anywhere in Portland.2 points -
It's similar to the "hot soak" method that's popular in Japan. About an hour after I get tattooed, I get the water as hot as I can stand it and either take a hot shower or soak in a hot bath for about 10 minutes. It usually hurts worse than the tattoo itself, at least at first, but the pain subsides fairly quickly. I've had great results with healing tattoos this way.2 points

Milton Zeis project
Shannon Shirley reacted to sboyer for a topic
Hello, My partner Kayla and I are teaming up to put together a Milton Zeis book. Its going to be a biography with examples of his machines, catalogs, books, commercial flash ect. We are in the process of researching and gathering source material right now and I was just curious if anyone had info or material they would like to contribute. Our goal with this book is to preserve his legacy for those that have come after him. We also want to have an accurate resource for people interested in his life and work and provide solid reference material for tattooers/collectors. Please contact me if you have any info regarding Zeis that you like to contribute. Thanks!1 point -

.....and......."in 2003 and 2004, the FDA received its largest cluster of complaints, more than 150, from people on the giving and receiving end of tattoos." so only 75 complaints in a year for the MILLIONS of americans that have tattoos. yeah, shut the industry down. fucking retards.1 point -

thanks Iwar. I guess this is the next step? Damn, I guess I like being a dinosaur. some of this stuff i can understand as art , but it is so odd to me that we are pulling so far away from the "primal", if you will, meanings and reasons of tattooing. from the iceman's possible ,medicinal? or ritualistic properties, such as the pea', or the ''shellback'', you got tattooed because something happened. I admit Ive gotten plenty because I thought it was cool,( although I don't feel I ever got a tattoo to make me cool , because let's remember, tattoos don't make you cool) or made me beautiful, but Ive got others to mark a change in me or my life. These ''Art'' tattoos seem to be making a pretentious statement. it seems wrong I think because a lot feel that tattoos should mean something. this didnt happen overnight or by just one person. We as a post modern culture have created the enviroment for this to happen. So I'm not gonna blame the pretentious tattooist ( it seems, although I dont know these people) or the narcisisstic client that allowed this to be done to them, so they can be the coolist one at the gallery. I guess I'm just not that cool. I have always enjoyed viewing and making art, but I see art in alot of unpretentious places. I don't think I'm gonna hang my pinky out when I sip my tea anymore. I love the heritage of tattooing, I have been involved in my own little corner of it's heritage. I'm gonna leave my wannabe jackson Pollack paintings on canvas. I think I'll stick to the standards, I got called an old school tattooer yesterday, It felt good. My mentors and father would be proud. It's not good or smart to show off, alot of times, just like your mom said, yer gonna get hurt.1 point -
Chad Koeplinger, Frith Street, 28th May 2010, cause i wanted a torch  (also the lettering was at the same time) the picture's backwards, as it was taken in a mirror. the stars and dots filler were done about half a year or so later when i was also getting some other things tattooed by him (Chad) again.1 point

I felt like blowing some life into this old thread. I got this tattooed in some random tattoo shop in Copenhagen back in 2000. The design is taken from my dad's old businesscard (he's a guitar luthier). The picture was taken two minutes prior to posting... Your turn!1 point

I saw those pictures on the bbc a few days ago. Was really interesting, it's just a shame that the first edition of the book is sold out. Hopefully it will get a wider release. Although I did manage to find a video of a guy flicking through the book slow enough so that you could see all the pictures in it.1 point -

I can't say I'm into this stuff. However, I think the people doing these tattoos are putting on clean lines and very solid color. It's no worse than some of the other " no outline crap" out there. I didn't even know there was a name for this style.1 point -

i finally get to add to this thread!! i've been waiting six months for this tattoo and for me it was well worth the wait! the long wait was not because the artist was booked up, but because i set a goal and the tattoo was my reward. i get it filled in October 21, just before my birthday.1 point

I got this little Purple Monkey done yesterday. I know its on the cheesy side, but I got it for my daughter. I've called her Punky Monkey since she was born and her favorite color is purple, I let her pick out the design (she's four by the way) and location. It is also on my left arm which I plan on using for totally random stuff. Damn camera phone sucks ass, bad quality photo.1 point -

My kids have always been big on drawing on themselves, I think like most kids. Unlike most parents, we don't tell them no, or to stop. It was actually one of my son's preschool teachers that decided my son could color on himself in any fashion, saying that it was our "family culture." That being said, my two yr old daughter's "tattoos," as she calls them, rarely look as good, placement wise, as that first picture.1 point -

One time in NYC, these Canadians who were friends with the friend I was staying with checked out of their room, and then came to ours for a little visit. Then then remembered that they left 10 lbs of weed in their rooms freezer. They actually decided to go question housekeeping, who happened to be Jamaican, who laughed and told them that they had thrown out their "stinky vegetables." They then went down to the trash area, where more housekeeping staff informed them that their "stinky vegetables" had been disposed of properly.1 point

First tattoo
gougetheeyes reacted to Bunny Switchblade for a topic
Let me say it is an honor to be the first post in this thread! I can only imagine some of the ownderful stories to come!!! First tattoo was a pachuco cross on my left index finger! Was done by needle and thread with india ink by a boy whose name i can't even remember! It has lasted 28 years and believe it or not cost me a promotion to a management position 17 years ago....back when tattoos were not as ""hip" or "fashionable" Would I do it again??? Yes....most definitely....although knowing what i know now.....it would have been professionally done! I got my first Professional tattoo 26 years ago by the lovely Juli Moon while she was still at Dragon Moon Tattoo in Baltimore, Maryland! It is a butterfly on my left breast which has since been incorporated into my chest piece! I am fortunate to have started being tattooed by such a wonderful tattooist right out of the gate and i know that now! I have made several mistakes over the years by being tattooed by people in the craft who were friends but less than accomplished tattooists but fortunately nothing that is horrible or couldn't be fixed! Why did I get tattooed? I grew up in an area where people had tattoos....not necessarily I guess the best area, and I fell in love with the art at a very early age! I am the only one of the three girls that walked to the door of Dragon Moon Tattoo that went inside that evening! It was more of a street shop then than a "studio" and I have to admit I was scared to death! But I did it and have lived with the outcome of my decision for 26 years now! What a wonderful decision it was too! I have some of the best friends and have met some of the nicest people! That decision 26 years ago has led me to have a wonderful collection of art on my body done by 49 artists to date! I want to have the best work I can have....by the best artists I can get to tattoo me! I am a collector of fine art now and my skin is the canvas!!!1 point
