Tattoos and the workplace
Turquoise Cherry and 3 others reacted to jade1955 for a topic
I work in an office environment with a small team working a nightshift and my workmates know I'm tattooed. All that is visable are the tips of an eagles wings on the back of my neck. The only reason I don't show them is that I always wear a long sleaved shirt at work, although once, when I had to pop in to work on my time off I was wearing a t shirt because thats how I usually dress when I'm not at work. At my age I couldn't care less about climbing the corperate ladder, never could when I think about it (never did like the idea of my tongue tasting of shit). The only reason that I don't have any tattoos on my hands is because you never know what is around the corner as far as employment is concerned and unfortunately tattoos still carry a stigma. During my last year at work, before I retire, I will get my hands done though.4 points -

So we've got a lady head thread, how about an entire lady body thread! Here's one that I've always liked! It's by Mike Wilson. And if you knew the guy in the photo, please know I mean no disrespect by posting this, he was a friend of mine to, and he had and did some awesome tattoos. I really like the simplicity of the design. The shading is so minimal yet so effective.2 points

suggestions for aiding newcomers
Jaycel Adkins reacted to Steve for a topic
There is some info in there that is specific to people who are new to tattoo's as well, so it seemed more fitting, and potentially more eye-catching.. Yes, there is now messaging built in to the initial registration pages, as well a notice that displays for any user with less than 6 posts - directing them to the newbie article. Thanks again for your suggestions and feedback - keep them coming!1 point -
Tattoos and the workplace
Jaycel Adkins reacted to kirkson for a topic
I work in a very conservative industry in a large office, and its just not an option to have anything visible. I know for a fact there a sizable group in the office is tattooed (wtf, its LA, right?) but all of us are very careful to conceal during work hours. There's no policy or anything like that, but it's just not a recipe for advancement, or even respect, in this environment. Anyway, as Kev said, I like the hidden aspect of it all. This actually came up just yesterday, started some new work on my arm and the design had to be adjusted to make sure it didn't come down too far. Frustrating, but the same job that restricts me gives me the freedom (read:cash) to get the work done in the first place.1 point -
I use to work for Chase in a corporate office, I was a foreclosure analyst. One of the VP's who was head of Bankruptcy had his throat and neck done, and top of his hands tattooed. I for myself when I first started wore long sleeves, or a cardigan, and noticed some more people with a random fore arm tattoo walking around once I learned about the policy and tattoos at any workplace. What it's boiled down to most companies is as long as it's not offensive or say "fuck you", you should be treated like anyone else. Eventually I was wearing polos or short sleeve dress shirts and nobody really cared that I had sleeves and parts of my hand done. If anything random managers or VP's would come talk to me on break and ask about the art, and asked which dept I was from...was a neat icebreaker to meet them if I wanted to ever in the future switch depts and try something else out. Currently, I work for a small office doing a hybrid IT job (includes researching for recruiting and working with databases). The owners are genuine people and do not care at all that I have tattoos. Fortunately, I could say I'm lucky, but also, the times are changing for workplace and it's beginning to be very common for employees, managers, etc. to have tattoos also. As far as my career goes, I free lance design/intern for design, and after my associates plan on looking into being a system/network administrator. Most IT jobs do not care about the tattoos and sometimes let you work remotely from home.1 point

First Tattoo Ideas & Advice: Goose
Jaycel Adkins reacted to gougetheeyes for a topic
Oh, to be 17/18 again.. Spend some time looking at reference material and then find a good shop where you can talk to someone. I remember my own grand ideas of what I wanted to jam into all these tattoos I would one day get.. sounds like you're over-thinking it. Nothing to feel bad about, but I bet the more you look at tattoos in general, the more you'll see that the simpler the design, the better it holds up. If you're planning more, why not just start with the simple, etching-style goose? Where are you located, maybe some folks on here can give you recommendations for a good shop. Or recommendations for good reference even. If you have a little cash to spend and the patience to wait on the tattoo, I'd order some magazines (Total Tattoo, Tattoo Life/Energy...jeez, are there any decent American ones anymore other than TAM?) and maybe a book or two (Tattooing from Japan to the west by Horitaka is a good overview, pretty inexpensive), to see what's out there and what's feasible. Hope that helps dude!1 point -

I'll second Theo Mindell as one of the top lady-headers. I'll probably end up with one from him sometime soon. Also, I didn't see Cris Cleen mentioned in here, but I love his ladies. ALSO, that Dietzel flash on the last page is soooooo good.1 point -

Recommendation for traditional style tattooer in San Diego
David Flores reacted to ian for a topic
Last I heard Luke had relocated to NY, this was about a month ago.. Dominic gets down as does Rob Benavides, I believe he's the owner of FP. Ben Grillo is also at FP a few days out of the week and though he's known for his insanely detailed B&G tattoos he's dabbling in some nice traditional as well... super cool guy too :D1 point -
La ink canceled
AlannaCA reacted to Jaycel Adkins for a topic
I'll be honest and say 'the inks' gave me an eye for what a good tattoo could look like, and sometimes a great tattoo. I've since moved on to blogs, books, and the forum, but at the start, it was 'the inks.' Too bad that all the apparently manufactured drama got in the way, which is kinda weird, I mean, was there tons of 'drama' on those other reality/work shows? So just NY INK now, which stumbled pretty badly out of the gate and kinda didn't recover for me, so much melodrama and sentimentality, the finale had this 'The Hills' vibe that was a little too weird. I would love to watch like a serialized 'hoop dreams' type documentary series about tattooing, but that's not going to happen.1 point -

If I walk by someone on the street who is heavily tattooed and we are both eyeing each others stuff I'll just nod or smile as I go by them. If I get in a situation say waiting in lone at the bank and there's someone in front of me with nice tattoos I'll just look and not say anything. If they start a conversation in a polite way I have no problem telling them what shops I prefer in town or who did a certain tattoo. I'll often ask them the same. Usually though I've found neither party says anything, just take a look and goes on their way.1 point

slang terms that make you cringe?
Turquoise Cherry reacted to Ursula for a topic
Oh god Gouge. I want to murder stuff when I notice some look at my tattoos and then start talking loudly about how they wanna get all tatted up. Usually it's dudes that are just trying to look cool in front of the tattooed chick and usually I laugh in their face 'cause that's how I roll. So I'm at work right now and someone just touched my arm and said "you're all marked up arnt you" I said yup I've got a couple. Her reply "do they come off?" "no" " you mean you're stuck with that forever!?" "yup"1 point -
