I was harassed by a cop here in Portland with sleeves was trying to catch people riding the train with no fare on 4th of July. I bought an all day ticket at 9pm to go downtown and came back at 1am train stops running at 230 hence end of day. He threatened to write me a ticket because it was after midnight and I was drunk enough to tell him he was just upset that he was stuck on bus duty and he was fucking wrong. Still not sure how I didn't go to jail that night or even got a ticket.2 points -

What the hell is a tattoo season? I've been tattooed all year round before, swimming or not, the tattoo still healed well and looks good. I don't like being tattooed when it's winter, mostly because you feel SUPER cold when you take a break. :)1 point -
Pre and post-tattoo rituals
David Flores reacted to pixxillatted for a topic
I use to make sure I ate about an hour before, and then after I'd head out to find a med rare steak or burger. A few nights ago I got my first tattoo since going vegetarian. I did not get a steak or a burger and I was hella grumpy because of it. Not a happy camper. Now I have to find some other after tattoo ritual. Seeing as beer is so highly recommended, I think I will start with that and build from there. I've also felt that pain killers were cheating, like if you had the balls for a tattoo then you should have the balls for a tattoo. I've had one artist use numbing cream once during the work, but I didn't see that it made that much of a difference. When I get around to doing my ribs I'm pretty sure I'll cry like a sissy and probably cheat any way I can and screw what I thought before. We've had a couple of highly medicated people come in the shop and they made me uncomfortable. I'd hate to have a medical emergency on my hands if they misjudged their dosing.1 point -
Pre and post-tattoo rituals
Duffa reacted to blessedmatter for a topic
I don't understand taking pain killers. It's mainly because I get tattooed spontaneously for the most part and I don't want to get used to something that won't always be readily available. Plus, I kind of think "no pain, no game." Man, when I got my stomach tattooed it was one of the worst pains I've ever experienced, but when I was done I was pretty pumped on having sat like a champ for it. It made me feel like I truly earned it, especially since it's a badass tattoo (panther fighting a snake). Fuck, once I saw a kid getting his area code tattooed on him in the shape of weapons, and he was fucking balling. It was very ironic and pathetic.1 point -

Best post tattoo care?
David Flores reacted to philip milic for a topic
hmm,, simple,, as long as your not over working the tattoo should heal on its own with out any use of lotion or ointment. may take a full week but not much more other than that. at my shop we all agree that you should cover your tattoo for a minimum of twelve hours(basically over night) as soon as you wake up take a nice warm shower (stings like fuck but its not destroying you)..... leave it dry for a day. 2nd morning and after use a fragrant free ,if needed for sensitive skin hypoallergenic lotion. use once to twice a day until healed.(rubbing lotion on like you just had dry skin not a thick coat),,,, the human body does a great job of healing on its own and putting greasy sticky ointments on a fresh tattoo can cause the tattoo to stay open as well attract more dirt than healing elements such as oxygen. as well if the greasy tattoo should dry up it can cause a lot of cracking from a soggy scab :( hence dont soak your tattoo. the reason we think covering a tattoo for at least 12 hours right after its done is because the skin is creating plasma for the first 12 hours which if the skin does get over worked in a certain area it will tend to scab less do to less plasma build up while drying. also it will be less likely to attract staff or any other bacteria you can pick up from the outside world like the club, your pets, public transportation or sharing what you may have with the outside world. after twelve hours under a bandage the tattoo will have sealed its self and should be done weeping. of course there are those with extra sensitive skin but all in all i was taught that if a tattoo heals poorly its 95 % if not more the tattoo artists fault. no room for excuses. weather your a yoga instructor, a construction worker or a person who sits behind a desk all day your tattoo should heal for the most part perfect on the first go. if your heavy handed to the point were you may be over working the skin a lot you really should give this method a try it cant hurt your tattoos are healing shitty anyways :) happy healing :) dont forget sex and laughter are good for the immune system which will make your tattoo heal quicker.1 point -

no tattoos.....no love.......fuck you in the face for thinking you can tattoo and not be tattooed, the trade involves a commitment a dedication to the craft. if you dont respect it or like it enough to get the product you produce on you then you are a parasite.....''robbing from the host." i think that would be the definition. as for boris i have no interest in what he has to offer. has anyone seen how many ink caps that guy uses. how many fucking shades of skin tone can you need? or does that weird rotary you take the tips of not blend a color. christ!!!!!!!1 point -
Tattooers with little to no tattoos
Shannon Shirley reacted to dari for a topic
I've never been tattooed by anyone that wasn't almost completely covered, and I can't think of any tattooer I know that isn't mostly all covered. Its like the analogy of hanging out in a barbershop, you're eventually gonna get a haircut. If you love tattooing, and you're around good artists, how could you not end up covered in them? If anything, I'd be weary of a tattooer who only had new and perfect tattoos. From what I've seen, a lot of amazing tattooers who've been tattooing for a long time are covered in kinda crappy tattoos (sorry, no offense), because they've been around tattooing for so long. Or they're under there somewhere, 2 or 3 layers down. Chrome bio-mechanical Virgin Mary, anyone? Of course, I'd never fault someone for being young, (or rich or thin or beautiful, for that matter), so young tattooers are exempt from this generalization, but I can't think of any 20 yr. olds I'd let tattoo me, either.1 point -

Would you go to a dentist that had missing teeth? Would you go buy a car from a sales man that takes the bus? Would you buy a cake from a baker that does not eat sweets. How about a Fat Personal trainer? LOL I am having too much fun with this. All to be said that getting tattooed by an artist with little to no tattoos, makes little to no sense at all. But to each their own.1 point -

There are sometimes exceptions to any rule and I agree with Tim but I would go much further and use the term parasite. They are feeding off something and giving nothing back. I fail to see how any tattooer can understand what they are doing to people if they have no tattoos. Yeah there's the pain side. Mostly it's not that bad, but if you're tattooing ribs, chests, backs etc you should at least have empathy with your customer. But more than the sensation of being tattooed, there's the mental and emotional side to being a tattooed person. The way it feels to have made a deliberate choice to get a tattoo, placed a certain amount of trust in a stranger (usually) and to have the results with you every moment of your existence. To know what it's like to live with a tattoo, to see it age with your body etc. Not forgetting the social side, the way other people interact with you, either positive or negative. All these things cannot be understood without having tattoos. Being heavily tattooed is certainly no indicator of the quality of a tattooers work, but I have zero respect for tattooers with no tattoos.1 point -

I don't get it. I love tattooing on every level. Despite the changes in the business over the last few years, I still love it. I love getting tattooed even though I hate how much it hurts. I love putting a tattoo on someone. I love the bonds I have made from tattooing AND BEING TATTOOED. I'm not suggesting that everyone should have tattoos on their hands and neck like I do, but if you tattoo, I would think you might want to have some awesome work. My tattoos are constantly visible and I am proud of them and proud that I am lucky enough to be a tattooer. As to what others have said, I have learned tons from getting work done by great tattooers. I would not be the tattooer I am without having information passed to me by other artists. You can only learn so much by sitting in the same chair day in and day out. Also, I am never more inspired than when I visit another shop and get tattooed. It gives me an energy that is amazing. I often want to get right back into the shop and draw and tattoo better. Anyway, I love tattooing and can't imagine not getting tattooed while being in this business. It has never made sense to me but I guess to each his own but I wouldn't get tattooed by someone who doesn't have tattoos. Just my thoughts on the matter.1 point

I personally do not respect tattooers as much that have no tattoos either. Now maybe I'm being closeminded but fuck it. I wanna know that a tattooer is devoted to his trade; mentally, emotionally, financially and most of all physically. I'm not talking about being heavily tattooed but at least a forearm shot or two. If you're a tattooer and have not one single tattoo or maybe just one... You're just a tourist in our business, go back to selling real estate, there's more of that 'glory' stuff you're lookin' for.1 point -

Totally different imo. But, if given the choice, and all else being equal- I would be more comfortable having elective surgery performed by a surgeon who had also chosen to have elective surgery than one who would not. " It's just a tattoo, I don't think there's too much to empathize" --- That's definitely not how I feel as a tattooer and I really hope the people i choose to get tattooed by feel the way I do---not the way you do.1 point -

My last tattoo involved the ditch, and the first night was awful, especially since I was still all wrapped up in plastic. But I have had some hardcore training in sleeping in absurd positions as a mom. Even though I never have meant to share a bed with either of my offspring, still they end up in there, and moving/readjusting comes with the huge risk of them waking up and all hell breaking loose. We've just kind of learned to sleep in these crazy positions, hoping that we don't end up with permanent nerve damage due to lack of bloodflow to the area. But yeah, I can now sleep without moving around too much. For the nap, I usually drink a lot of coffee, but I made sure to only have a half cup that day to keep the headache away. After a very long, hot shower, I massaged in a tablespoon or two of good organic olive oil while my skin was still a little wet, (sometimes blotting it with a towel if I got a little crazy) put on a loose, soft long sleeve cotton shirt, and sacked out. Yes, I know, olive oil may sound weird, but it worked out great for me. Besides being natural and hypoallergenic, it has no weird additives, and has the antioxidants A and E which help stimulate the cells to repair the skin. It also lasts for a long time, once or twice a day is plenty. Just wondering, has anyone else had good results with Maxiline?1 point

I drink a 6 pack, and Eat a couple of bowls of chili beforehand. I make sure to put lots of garlic in the chili too. Then I drink as much coffee as possible during the tattoo, and take smoke breaks. This usually makes for a magical experience that I recommend for everyone. I also have a warm up dance that I do, but that is secret.1 point
