The end of an apprentice - sacking your mentor.
mikevaladez and 8 others reacted to Scott R for a topic
I havnt been a member long, but as a non tattooer it upsets me that some of the artists are posting less because of us. I and most from what I can tell are grateful to be on this site with awesome artists and have no intention on doing anything other than getting good tattoos from good artists. I dont want to market anything or make money. I want to learn more so I am in position to get some great work and share it with the place that is getting me on the right path.9 points -

While watching the excellent Freedy Corbin tattoo in blog, my ears perked up when he started talking about his tattooed nun from Don Ed Hardy. I really like this design concept. My first exposure to it was in old Japanese woodcut prints of tattooed samurai from the Shinpen Suikogaiden I've seen Westernized versions ranging from the Greg Irons Edith Burchett tattoo: to cholo updates like this banger from Nico Acosta at Better Days in Santiago Chile: and this awesome Red Hot from Eric Gregory at Little Vinnie's Tattoos in Baltimore, MD: Anybody else dig this?6 points

It's easy to write off dissenting opinions as "hating" or "ego maniacal". Don't make that mistake here. Look at how you approach us instead once in a while. We are this harsh to ourselves, and each other bye the way. Not just in critiques. If you are looking for the "passive happy information machines" go somewhere else.2 points

I came to this forum to find other people into getting tattooed with knowledge to share. I found that and as a bonus some of the top tattooers in the world speaking freely about tattoos and other various topics. Before my son was born I spent six days in the week behind the counter of the shop and the other day getting tattooed at another shop in town, now i work only Friday and Saturday. So the rest of the week I interact with soccer moms at Target and the park. It's nice to have a place to come and chat during my downtime and getting a perspective outside the shop you have grown comfortable in. I would hate for it all to go away.2 points -

Some thoughts: If you start a thread, you are the steward of that thread, not just someone asking a question, so think about the following: - Are you duplicating another thread that is already out there? - Best to just ask your question and then let people trickle in with their replies, give it some time, knows it's the internet, but the people who you likely want to answer your question probably aren't watching you type your question as you are doing it. - Take Responsibility for the demeanor of your thread, set the tone, maintain it, if things break down (it happens) and you got your question answered already or not (think, is it honestly that vital?), say you are retiring the thread and don't post there anymore, after a while, all threads go into the void. - Be a polite host for your thread. Ignore posts that you deem to be rude, honestly, that's the best way to respond to them. Don't get caught in a back and forth of snark, it will immediately kill your thread and make people not want to post replies. - Honestly, be a bit too polite, since it's just too easy to take offense. - If this sounds like a lot of stuff, it is. Speaks from experience, I started a thread and it went sideways, quickly and within a few days, I retired from it very dejected and embarrassed for myself. Do the above, and hopefully you won't have a similar experience.2 points -

Bunny Switchblade and one other reacted to shaneenholm for a topic
well deb..I get it..since we have alot of mutual friends and that seems to be the subject amoung us as of late. I just dissappear for awhile...( I did it for the entire decade of the 90s well part of the late 80s too but some of that was beyond my control.so to speak)then I kinda step out and see whats going on...I am at the point where i feel like stepping off again, well i kinda have and i know it left some people puzzled but I (hopefully) got that straightened out. There,I guess was always politics in this just not so mainstream...but now more than ever that end is heart breakingly sad...Jack Rudy had an idea one time of starting "the tattoo tattler" a gossip column dedicated to the politics and whispers thereof...I only wish I had thought that up first. You know the thing is after many years basically all you know besides a few people have something to do with tattooing. And once upon a time it was harder to have those that were not in this relate to you..but it is so mainstream now that it does not matter as much anymore.I mean the whole world tattoos now...I miss the smell of angel dust in the shop...(not that I ever liked that shit)but just the fact that it was a possibility....etc..etc... I think you just have the blues..the regular old blues..what do you have 30 plus years in now....We need you more than ever...so dont sell your inversion table just yet...did you feel this way before you went to jax bch or after your return...? just wonderin...you got a great spot to lay low...so hang in there...just know you are not alone with those feelings.... you do not need me to tell ya this but remember that is not water some of these people think they are walkin on..after all it aint like we are transplant surgeons..we just put colored scabs on people...then it becomes kinda funny...from the sidelines anyway....hope you feel better2 points -

Great post, Perez. All they can do is ask, and all the pros have to do is not answer.2 points -
Well, ultimately it's up to tattooers to just not answer the questions. People are going to ask questions and occasionally step over the line, especially people new to this who don't know any better. Most of the time it's an honest mistake, it's no big deal and a gentle correction should suffice. It's when people start demanding to know things, like we owe them something, that there's a problem.2 points

Cat pictures? Yeah we've got those. Bullet is the all black mini panther who belongs to me and my girlfriend. Mortician is the huge black and white one who belongs to Lochlan. Each cat is 20 lbs give or take. They're both Hemingway Cats/Polydactyls. Bullet has six toes per foot and I think Mort has 6 or 7 on each foot...2 points

Would like to keep looking at this at work but sometimes I see people post stuff that isn't safe for work. I think it would be a good idea to warn people if it is or not. On a site I read...putting, NSFW in you're post or if you are "linking" something in regards to a reply back to a comment is pretty good idea to protect ya neck....and PLEASE Bubbleberry change your avatar please man, that shit is definately NSFW, thanks for gay ass every time I see you on here. Hi not trying to turn this into netmums but any other tattooed parents out there?
AlannaCA reacted to shaneenholm for a topic
Well that is an interesting subject..I am the father of 5 kids...ages 28 ,26,24,21,16.....and they grew up around tattooing. And only 2 of them have any tattoos and they are minimal and by 19(1983) i was sleeved and a parent. I think they look at it like that is their Pops job and not some cool thing.None of them wanted to tattoo ..though it was offered as a career to all of them..I am very happy they passed.Though i beleive it helped influence their creativity but I will never know for sure because I have no non tattooing family to compare it to...if ya follow me. I think because they grew up around it ..it gave them more of an open mind into not judging people by their appearances...i think it also helped them not care what others thought of their apprearance or their friends appearances, i was recently at one of their weddings and a friend of my daughters came up to and said he was always terrified of me when he was younger...which i wondered how that perception by my childrens friends of me may have affected them...but i am pretty sure it did not do as much damage as my parenting in general may have done. They have never asked me to cover my tattoos ,though one of the step daughters(2 of the 5) used to ask her mother to cover hers ( she too tattoos for aliving)...but that was early on. I think it is as much the internet as anything that has normalized tattooing in the eyes of the youth. I wonder if the whole premise that the generations revolt and do the opposite of their parents will be like in 20 years...they revolt as teenagers but beome their parents in their 30s and 40s...so i guess we will see.... What is it..that today a 15 year old in africa who owns an I phone has access to more information than the president of the united states did on the year of the the teenagers birth( long winded way of saying 15 years ago) THAT HAS TO HAVE SOME INFLUENCE ON EVERYTHING...INCLUDING OUR CHILDRENS PERCEPTIONS OF TATTOOING AND THIER PARENTS TATTOOS....NO?1 point -

I don't think that the idea of a tattooer only section is elitist Mario, although I would hate to see the tattooers on here disappear into that section of the forum. One of the pleasures I get is reading rather than posting (most of my posting activity is in the non tattoo section) and there's a good reason for that. Unfortunately some people join forums to seek attention and act the "Big I am". As someone once said "opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one". Unfortunately some people have trouble grasping the concept that unless a contribution to a discussion has some point or merit it's best to keep your arsehole to yourself.1 point -

Most painful spot to get tattooed
gougetheeyes reacted to David Flores for a topic
The second or third tattoo I got was on my sternum. I had no idea what I was in for, I had a tattoo or two on my upper arms and that was it. Was seeing some girl who wanted to get a tattoo and while I was in the lobby waiting for her to get done, I decided i was going to get one too, so I picked a skull inside a Maltese cross and said put in on my sternum. I don't think me writhing in pain for an hour impressed her that much. The girl is long gone but the tattoo is still there and funny enough one of my current best friends was the guy who put the tattoo on.1 point -

I think I spent five hours getting this tattooed on me a long time ago before i knew how to get tattooed and what to get tattooed. It still is just amazes me what the fuck i was thinking. Note the tattoo isn't even finished after the five hours, but I have to admit looking back I can't imagine trying to make sense out of the line drawing and what was black and what was skin.1 point -
