This tattoo was done on my boss Ross Ferrie by Pinky Yun in 1982. Ross always tells this story of getting this dragon along with many others of Pinky. Pinky basically dipped a toothipick in some black ink gave himself a few reference points and just started tattooing on his arm. Ross admits he wasn't so sure at the time but the end result turned out. The other photo is Ross and Pinky in 1982 and a painting our friend Ashley did for Ross shortly after Pinky's death. Note Ashley painted this while in New Zealand only from what he remembered it looking like.6 points -

Oh, man...two British Stoos (Stuart Cripwell from Wales and Stewart Robson from England) absolutely crushing this thread. The Robson Pharaoh's Horses that Kyle just posted is one that I've ogled many times. It's entirely too good. Whipshading at its finest and not at all out of place. I'd still give him a wedgie if I ever met him, provided I was wearing a cool guy hat, but Robson's stuff never disappoints. The ability to pull off extra-tough Americana classics AND do jawdropping large-scale Japanese work is a rare skill combo, and he seems to have it in spades.2 points

Thanks to everyone who shared their opinions and experiences, reading some of the posts was reassuring for me. I've only been on this forum for a short time but i just want to mention how great i think this forum is, because of all the cool and helpful people here who are willing to share and be respectful. so, i booked time with my tattoo artist to have the work done. he's a talented and respected tattoo artist in SF (i've also seen his name come up a few times on this forum and its always in a positive light), and he knows about the scar and is ok with it. i'm so f-ing excited to get a tattoo by him. the appointment isnt for a while, but maybe if im not too shy i just might post a photo of it here after it's done.2 points

The way that i see it, it seems like a very challenging animal to draw because of the shape of the face and all the different definition and where the muscles are and so on. i havent seem much that has impressed me and im hoping that other LSTers can guide me in the right direction. Though having just said that, some of the stuff that has been on my mind has been work by Bailey H. Robinson. I think his work is pretty awesome. what also comes to mind is the picture of Amund Dietzel in "These old blue arms" he has a pretty amazing horse chest piece! i wish i could scan the image from my copy of the book but i dont want to upset anyone by doing so. its pretty cool, you should go buy the book!! :) also if i could find it i'll repost, but another member by the name of Nickypapers posted a picture of the tattoo he has on his stomach of three horses very similar to the Amund Dietzel tattoo.2 points

I've never had kids so I don't have large stretch marks so I don't know from being personally tattooed. I have seen many many many people get tattoos to cover stretch marks and it seems to work pretty well. It really depends on the severity of the stretch marks and how good the artist is. As long as they arn't very deep or very discoloured you should be o.k. When you go into a tattoo shop, make sure to ask if the person has done this type of work before, and see if they might even have a photo they can show you. The best thing is to just make sure the artist is really experienced. They should ask to see the affected are before they agree to do the tattoo. Don't be shy, just say hey I have this issue can you help and if they are a good artist they will ask to see the area and then help you make a decision.2 points

the guy is standing in front of a tribal background, the tattoo doesn't match the pattern in the background. I love this forum but the responses to this thread remind me of another shitty tattoo forum that I found before LST. Who are we to clown the tattoo that this guy wants? As people with more tattoo knowledge than the average TLC watcher, its our duty to help people, especially noobs, to get good quality work, not make them feel dumb for wanting something that we wouldn't necessarily get. I know that I have tattoos that others wouldn't get but I really don't give a shit, they're MY tattoos. Just because this dude wants some tribal doesn't mean the rest of us have to Maybe he's a troll, maybe not but I do know that they're trying to make this forum grow and with that growth is gonna be more people asking questions like this. Maybe that growth isn't the best idea for this crowd. If Crafty wants to share where he's from maybe someone could suggest a local artist that won't fuck him up.... Sorry for the rant but shit...... arrogance and tattoos don't make a pretty picture, IMO....2 points

So I'm pretty much a packrat. And I have 1000s of hours of VHS video in various rubber maids around my house. Some commercially produced stuff. Some literally one of a kind transfers of old 8mm films that were left to me when older friends passed away. I found out last night that my "dazzle" video hub doesn't work with a mac, so I put an order in for a Apple compatible device. Soon I'll be transcoding old films to digital. I'll try to remember to post links to anything I put on youtube here, though some of the footage (Cliff Raven tattooing naked) may not be everyone's cup of tea so I'll use discretion. First up is some NON naked Raven, some classic Realistic Tattoo stuff with Hardy, Irons, Salmon, Zulueta and the gang. Just have to wait for the hardware to arrive!1 point -

suggestions for aiding newcomers
Jaycel Adkins reacted to MsRad for a topic
i was serious about my suggestion for a read me first page (or sticky?), that would be an easy resource for newcomers (or even regulars) as to when they have a question that can easily be answered within or outside of this forum. i'm willing to write it up, and that way, rather than bickering back and forth with someone who is new, we can simply just link them to the page if they have a question that can already be answered.1 point -

Tattoos in stretch marked areas
AlannaCA reacted to Gia Dobson for a topic
I'm going to say "ditto" to what Ursula said above and will add that I have gotten tattooed over stretch marks (from pregnancy) and it came out great... However I would double emphasize getting the tattoo from an experienced artist... Not only is it challenging because of the marks, but also it is a pain in the ass for the artist because that skin is more stretched (or stretchy) than skin that hasn't been slowly stretched to accommodate growing an 8 pound human being over a 40 week period... so it moves or "gives" a lot more and is just harder to tattoo on. It also depends on how big, deep and discolored the marks are. I would guess that marks from a growth spurt like you can sometimes get on the thigh or hip and easier to work on than the kind of loose skin and marks you see with people who lose a major amount of weight. An experienced artist will be able to tell you honestly what result is reasonable to expect. (Mine are the pregnancy kind and not too severe.) Im super happy to have the tattoo there because when I look in the mirror that is all I see.1 point -

That was just heartwarming. I feel really good now. At first the pace was little hectic, music blasting over Santoros and Marcus was talking over them little too much. But when they went in the Tibetan museum, it was like swooosh! Marcus was calmer and whole of the vibe shifted. You could just see when he talked that he had that warmth in his belly. That exitment. Love it. And when Thomas talked about the more complex patterns and how they link to the brain being complex... Yes. A cycle. And he explained the pover of Tribal tattooing to the teeth. Great thought about the black. And the scene where they all drew in the diner. I felt happy :) Little too loud music at times, but other than that it was lovely.1 point -
suggestions for aiding newcomers
pixxillatted reacted to MsRad for a topic
i think some of the things that should be addressed are the real basics, such as this forum isn't here to be a substitute for an artist. it's unrealistic for us to give anyone a quote or tell them how long something will take, as both of those are dependent on the design and the artist. also, having links to all the individual threads on the different types/styles of tattoos(lady heads, rose morphs, black work, etc.) would be handy. also, why we won't answer certain questions (like how to build a machine) and why they may come off as offensive to some. i'm sure i'll come up with more stuff, but this is a start.1 point -
So the OP writes that they finally found a tattoo they liked and its the 8th photo on the first page when you google "tribal tattoo. You don't think this person is a troll. OK Sanctamony & tattoos aren't a good mix either.1 point

I threw up in a fire pit at my moms's cabin this weekend. It was their one year anniversary with the place and there were many neighbors in attendance. After fly fishing all day/drinking tons of whiskey I came back and had more. I was also apparently found in the bathroom with a spilt can of copenhagen long cut all over the toilet and not one but two open beers by me. My mother and I. Shes kinda proud.1 point -

Hello, my name is John, people call me JB, I'm from Roanoke VA. I'm 34 years old and have been getting tattooed for 15 years... I'm an IT admin at a small private school. I'm also HFA (high functioning autistic) so I walk about with a blank face and dont really socialize outside of the tattoo world, where strangely I've become comfortable, probably because I've felt accepted. I bike alot on an old modded Trek 700 and am really into ancient astronaut theory and esoteric history. Aside from that, I have a wife (who has superior tattoos), 5 cats, and watch alot of bollywood and play too many video games. bonus pic:1 point -
i think that i WAS very close minded and i couldnt fully appreciate what the atrists were doing. i also started out looking at tattoos as most young girls do "(*valley girl voice*) it has to be on my wrist, facing me because its for me, and it has to be in white so only i can see it" type of mentallity.1 point

There's tattoo shops in the malls in Jacksonville, FL. It's fucked because it's home to one of the best shops in the world and they've got 5 locations, yet people still go to the shitty mall shop when they could be getting tattooed by Mike Wilson for the same price and actually get a piece of art they can be proud to wear for the rest of their lives.1 point

can i just say that i had a smile on my face the whole time, and dare i say that i kind of liked it more that tattoo age? i guess it's hard to tell since there's only been one 12 minute episode of tattoo age, and this was 31, but it encompassed so much of tattooing that i love, at least from a customer's stand point. i felt inspired after watching it. coincidental that Jackson and i may be going to New York by the end of the year, now i have to decide is it worth it to sell my car to get tattooed while i'm there (because there's so many artists that i love!), or do i want to not get tattooed to go to new zealand. it's a honest to god deciding factor, and it may sounds stupid to some, but god damn i'll miss getting tattooed if i leave here. it's one of the main points for wanting to stay.1 point

Question for artists or anyone about tattoo etiquette
kingofcosta reacted to hawk for a topic
Hey Mask0311, First off, I would love to see everybody sportin great tattoos wherever I go but unfortunately there are fewer people out there "keepin it real" and if I go to WalMart I can see a store full of bad tattoos these days. As far as this guy "blowin you off", it's an old game, as old as it gets with "runnin' the scam", some will spot you and size you up to start something at a high price that they never intend to finish when they have a string of butterflies they can knock out and make more on when you may have already paid in advance, basically you will get shuffled to the rear like you got treated at the 9pm bell. NYC went crazy with those scams when it opened tattooing back up and on this subject I could go on and on. As far as the tooth hurting thing, RUN!!! should have been your instinct and this leads me to tell you that there are tattooers out there who relish a challenge of turning bad tattoos into good ones, so don't worry about having someone else drive over the mess you have started. As far as your expecting better treatment/respect for being home from the military, your absolutely right, the military has always been our staple in tattooing and when everybody's home and the wars are all over we will miss that amount of biz and it goes from steak to pork chops for us tattooers and this is not to mention that there are those of us out here that understand your service to Uncle Sam. So, as far as "keeping it real" and to prove that not all of us are like this disgrace to our trade I will fix and finish your dragon at no charge with the stipulation that you provide the steaks that I will personally grill for you at my country home where I have a rifle range that I will provide 500 rounds of ammunition for you to shoot through my legally owned and registered machineguns after we are finished with the tattooing, on this deal you have my word. Your only hitch is to make it by land sea or air to Illinois and provide the bovine. It can be fixed and finished and picture posted to this thread should you come through on your end of this bargain and I mean all of this most sincerely. I can't do this for every person that's received your treatment or I would work myself into the poorhouse but this is my offer to you. Thanks for your service and I apologize for the hack who misrepresented our trade and culture and I hope to hear from you. Sincerely, -Hawk- of Hawks Tattoo's1 point -

My boss (Jack Witt) used to zap at a couple of different spots on the Pike (Lee Roy's, Long BeachTattoo) and has a killer scrapbook of vintage photos and business cards. I scanned all of them the other day. Being an ex-HA(apparently not an easy club to quit) and working on the Pike in the mid 70s, he has a boatload of great stories. I can't give ALL of the gems away, but here's some decent ones I can post.1 point
