  1. It will cost somewhere between the price of a large sandwich and the price of a house. But seriously, listen to David. also, that's one of the 10 pictures we see multiple times every day from customers, along with celebrity tattoos and the wonky outline-only tiny swallows. Let me guess, you don't want it as high up toward your neck, or as low down your arm and a little bit less across the stomach? I wished all the guys who used to bring this to me would bring Tom of Finland drawings instead. Usually the same motivation but much better designed, drawn and a hell of a lot more fun to tattoo and wear. The best advice would be to check out guys who specialise in large black tattoos and get them to design something that actually fits your body and works with it instead of this squiggly, ugly crap. - There's a tribal/blackwork thread here on LST somewhere. I know you're not going to read it.

  2. i think some of the things that should be addressed are the real basics, such as this forum isn't here to be a substitute for an artist. it's unrealistic for us to give anyone a quote or tell them how long something will take, as both of those are dependent on the design and the artist. also, having links to all the individual threads on the different types/styles of tattoos(lady heads, rose morphs, black work, etc.) would be handy. also, why we won't answer certain questions (like how to build a machine) and why they may come off as offensive to some. i'm sure i'll come up with more stuff, but this is a start.

  3. Here's the link to the blackwork tribal thread Stewart referenced. Plus there are some other cool tribal ish threads and pictures just take a look around..... I echo David and Stewart......find a good tattooer and let them have at it. Let us know if you decide you'd like some tattooer suggestions based on your location or upcoming travel..... As for the other stuff written in here, for a second I had to check my url to make sure I was on LST and not the other tattoo forums...... With that being said this thread/user does seems a bit fishy as this image is on every other tattoo internet site as their icon but lets try to stay positive and not scare off potential new tattoo customers or LSTers. Lets try to educate them so they can get good tattoos and support good tattooers all the while learning how getting a tattoo should be done. As to the new user ideas, Patrick/Gougetheeyes hit me up a few weeks ago with an idea that we will hopefully be incorporating sooner than later to help them navigate the site initially. If you have ideas on this please pm me or any of the other Team LST within the next week as we will be hashing it out at our upcoming meeting. Or feel free to use the LST Suggestions and Feedback area of the forum. Thanks everyone

    Who are you?

Hello, my name is John, people call me JB, I'm from Roanoke VA. I'm 34 years old and have been getting tattooed for 15 years... I'm an IT admin at a small private school. I'm also HFA (high functioning autistic) so I walk about with a blank face and dont really socialize outside of the tattoo world, where strangely I've become comfortable, probably because I've felt accepted. I bike alot on an old modded Trek 700 and am really into ancient astronaut theory and esoteric history. Aside from that, I have a wife (who has superior tattoos), 5 cats, and watch alot of bollywood and play too many video games. bonus pic:

  5. Thanks, but I wasn't talking about the language. I say 'cool' and other americanised phrases although I'm very English. I thought Marcus made a great narrator/guide and his mannerisms fit the style very well. I was more thinking about Dan's record/antique/coffee shop and hanging about drawing in a coffee shop. It's a very cool thing to do. I don't mean that in an insulting or negative way. If I wanted to be insulting i would have said 'hipster' but that's not what I wanted to mean. it's the kind of artsy hangout vibe that many people love and it fitted the style and approach Marcus has chosen to take, but it's the only small thing I didn't think was awesome because I'm kinda dorky and socially awkward. But that's tattooing in general for me, I'm just waiting for the tough guys to sniff me out, realise I'm an dork and give me a wedgie. You're right about Thomas' opinion on the power of tribal tattooing. I would extend the same thing to traditional Japanese tattooing too. Thomas knows his shit when it comes to the mechanics of powerful tattooing outside of the American style. I feel spoiled with all these cool documentaries and shows but even more spoiled because I've been fortunate enough to have had the same conversations with some of these guys face-to-face and often more in-depth. I feel like a kid being allowed to stay up past my bedtime and hang with the adults. I think that's really a more concise version of what I was trying to say to be honest. Marcus is a fucking cool ass tough guy.

    For darker days....

I threw up in a fire pit at my moms's cabin this weekend. It was their one year anniversary with the place and there were many neighbors in attendance. After fly fishing all day/drinking tons of whiskey I came back and had more. I was also apparently found in the bathroom with a spilt can of copenhagen long cut all over the toilet and not one but two open beers by me. My mother and I. Shes kinda proud.

  9. i was serious about my suggestion for a read me first page (or sticky?), that would be an easy resource for newcomers (or even regulars) as to when they have a question that can easily be answered within or outside of this forum. i'm willing to write it up, and that way, rather than bickering back and forth with someone who is new, we can simply just link them to the page if they have a question that can already be answered.

  11. That was just heartwarming. I feel really good now. At first the pace was little hectic, music blasting over Santoros and Marcus was talking over them little too much. But when they went in the Tibetan museum, it was like swooosh! Marcus was calmer and whole of the vibe shifted. You could just see when he talked that he had that warmth in his belly. That exitment. Love it. And when Thomas talked about the more complex patterns and how they link to the brain being complex... Yes. A cycle. And he explained the pover of Tribal tattooing to the teeth. Great thought about the black. And the scene where they all drew in the diner. I felt happy :) Little too loud music at times, but other than that it was lovely.

  12. Best. Ever. just to clarify i didn't mean everyone who is heavily tattooed are some kind of crazy homicidal nut case.. i just mean we tend to be more on the rough side of life rather than whatever the opposite of that is.. in my experience it takes a certain type of person to be heavily tattooed.. i'm not talking about people with 1-5 tattoos i'm talking those of us who have a compulsion to become totally covered.. like for example when you see another person on the street you don't know who's totally covered in any kind of tattooing you already know a little about them.. I still stand by my statement that the reason we're covered in so many tattoos isn't because we're normal people...

  13. That's a pretty good start! I think it might be beneficial to put something short in there about the actual designs and pictures of tattoos that are online, telling those who are new to tattooing that if you like something, you should want your own version of that from a good artist, instead of taking pictures from this site to see who'll copy it. From what I've heard from tattooers I know, that's an issue that seems to be worse at the minute. Considering some people I know are sometimes surprised that tattooers don't just trace things from a load of books (or, good ones, anyway!) all day, I get the impression that those who are brand new to tattooing think that they can only get a limited amount of subjects and styles on them- just look at the thread that inspired this, the guy wanted a copy of a picture he saw online. I think it might be a good idea to remind people to state not only where they're from, but also how far they can travel and a vague idea of what they're after, before asking for recommendations on studios. Some just say, "where's good in the UK?", and you're left thinking, "how do I answer that?!".

    Who are you?

Well I must say I have enjoyed this thread. So guess its my turn. My name is Jonathan Rockel. I am 32 years old and I live in Ontario, Canada. I am a plumber by trade with my local union. I live out in the country as I can't stand having a neighbors roof overhanging my own, that and it would be hard to keep my 2 horses in the back yard LOL. I have a little 9 and a half year old teacup Maltese who is only 5 pounds of pure fun. I got my first tattoo back when I was 19 and I have been slowly over the years getting more. The long gaps are only due to not making that much money or other priorities. I have big plans for more but I am going to have my sleeve finished first before I have a new one started. As AlannaCA had said that she has set goals for herself before she can get another tattoo, I have been doing the same now for the past 3 years. I love having a project to do, whether its fixing something around the house or building something. I have the most amazing wife in the world!! who I have been with for almost 11 years now. We both love tattoos and the art involved. We are both involved with our local classic car club. We currently cruise in our '79 Ford Thunderbird heritage edition. Its basically stock except for rims, tires and exhaust. I love to treat others as I wish to be treated, Kindness goes a whole lot further, giving others a sense of hope for humanity.

  20. By finally found that image, do you mean Googled tribal tattoo and found it on the first page. If you really want this tattoo I would suggest going into a shop or a few shops and talk to a tattooer about pricing. But I can tell you it will be expensive and take multiple sittings.

  23. I've never had kids so I don't have large stretch marks so I don't know from being personally tattooed. I have seen many many many people get tattoos to cover stretch marks and it seems to work pretty well. It really depends on the severity of the stretch marks and how good the artist is. As long as they arn't very deep or very discoloured you should be o.k. When you go into a tattoo shop, make sure to ask if the person has done this type of work before, and see if they might even have a photo they can show you. The best thing is to just make sure the artist is really experienced. They should ask to see the affected are before they agree to do the tattoo. Don't be shy, just say hey I have this issue can you help and if they are a good artist they will ask to see the area and then help you make a decision.

    Suits: NYC

You might as well invest! From a perspective of wearing them, you can tell the difference between a well made/tailored suit and one that is not. Brooks Brothers has nice ones but yet to buy one there as I try to find nice ones for cheaper due to $$$. For those in the Bay Area at the Great Mall in Milipitas you can score designer suits for very very cheap and sometime buy one get one free at Off Saks and other stores. Three pieces and bow ties are sick but haven't done it yet......

  27. guys, it shouldn't be a shock to anyone that tattooers/tattoo people arn't normally the friendliest 'leave a smile on your face even thought i think you're a moron' type people... we tend to be 'i will show you with my facial expression and my words that i think you are asking a dumb question' type people, even to each other... so yeah... i don't think it's arrogance, i think it's a large group of people who have always been outsiders in some way and those type of people tend to be a little less friendly than your average soccer mom or that chubby nurse you see walking to work every day with a huge smile on her face... there's a reason we're all covered in tattoos and it's not because we're normal happy people

  30. I think arrogance and tattoos have been working pretty well together since the emergence of youth culture in the 1950's, probably earlier. I think it's fine to poke light hearted fun at laziness and trolls. As long as constructive suggestions and criticism are also offered. I don't think anyone here made fun of him because of the tribal. It was because of his laziness, the terrible design of the photoshopped reference and the troll-potential. The good advice was for the benefit of anyone else who may check out this thread and on the off-chance Craftybigdog isn't a troll. The difference (for me) between LST and other forums, apart from the fact it was started by people I respect, is that a hell of a lot of people here know what they are talking about and can offer rock-solid advice. The tribal thread had some amazing tattooers suggested, with links to galeries and info on getting in touch with some of those guys. For me, suffering fools and tattoos are like chalk and cheese. Of course it's photoshop. He's not standing in front of anything. He's been terribly masked or cut out. SOmeone tried to add some depth-of-field by blurring one of his arms and shoulder. The design has been laid over with a transparency effect. Someone did put some effort into designing the shapes and where they would be placed, but they didn't know shit about tribal tattoos and the way muscles move. Some of the things that make it obvious that the dude in front of the camera had blank skin are, among others: the curve nearest his neck would crease and wrinkle when his head was turned that way and the the same is true of the tiny point peaking out from his armpit.

    Large Tattoo Gurus I have a ?

the guy is standing in front of a tribal background, the tattoo doesn't match the pattern in the background. I love this forum but the responses to this thread remind me of another shitty tattoo forum that I found before LST. Who are we to clown the tattoo that this guy wants? As people with more tattoo knowledge than the average TLC watcher, its our duty to help people, especially noobs, to get good quality work, not make them feel dumb for wanting something that we wouldn't necessarily get. I know that I have tattoos that others wouldn't get but I really don't give a shit, they're MY tattoos. Just because this dude wants some tribal doesn't mean the rest of us have to Maybe he's a troll, maybe not but I do know that they're trying to make this forum grow and with that growth is gonna be more people asking questions like this. Maybe that growth isn't the best idea for this crowd. If Crafty wants to share where he's from maybe someone could suggest a local artist that won't fuck him up.... Sorry for the rant but shit...... arrogance and tattoos don't make a pretty picture, IMO....

  32. There is a client of the shop who is in his mid 50's been getting tattooed since he was a teen and has quite the collection of good tattoos. Not only does he not have a back piece because he can't see it but he swears once he turns 60 he is done getting tattooed. Considering he is almost out of space on the rest of his body I have a feeling he will end up with a back piece eventually. His dad on the other hand had one tattoo done during the war and was subsequently shot in the same spot a few weeks later. He came got his second tattoo which was a betty boop with the name Betty below it (for his new girlfriend) at the age of 82 earlier this year.

  33. This is pretty much the only foum i check regularly. I've been using Forum Runner for a few weeks now on iPhone and iPad. Like Alanna, at first it felt a little clunky, like maybe I was going to miss out on something, but once I got used to the way it looks and feels, it's actually easier to see new posts than with a web browser. Direct messages work great too. The main thing lacking is a 'like' feature. I still prefer the browser version for over-long, tense, snooty and sarcastic rambling posts though.

Prices can be a funny thing. I notice a general parity in terms of price in the UK and Ireland by the bottle ... Around 50 pound or 60 euro for a 'good' Scotch. But then hop over to Spain and France and they may actually be cheaper again. Typically I buy my Scotch in the airports when I'm over in the UK- more for the selection they tend to have than the savings. Bourbon can be all over the place. I've seen Maker's Mark for sale here for 65 euro and then down the road for 37 euro.... I should have picked up some stuff coming back from the US last time I was over there, saw some Wild Turkey single barrell, 2 for something like 40 dollars. Islay whiskeys definitley appear to be the ascendant, which says a lot about the changing perception of them now versus in the past. I read in an old whiskey miscellany that the Scots used to believe they were medicinal or 'outdoors' whiskey, too elemental to be drank indoors. I guess what appeals to me about them is the sheer weight of the smokiness. Something like Uigdeail tastes like a cross between engine oil, iodine and a burned down woodshed. Somehow that's a good thing... A final recommendation on Irish whisky - How could I forgot Red Breast 12 year old....? Fantastic.

    Old tattoo photos

Heres a couple of mine. These were done 1970/71 when I was 15/16. The skull, my first ever tattoo is over 40 years old. The reds have gone from both of them but they are in pretty good nick considering. The artist was a guy called Steve who had a shop in the city of Bath, England. I think it was in Broad Street. Don't know what became of him. No appointments or bringing in artwork in those days. All walk ins. You just sat and waited your turn. The clients were bikers, skinheads and low lifes like me. I remember him tattooing and smoking rollups.
