Chemical Composition of Tattoo Pigments
JohnBentrup and 3 others reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
This is sadly very true. The day we are forced to use pigments that have passed a safety test is the same day we tattoo with food dye. Six months later, your tattoo will look like shit. Maybe it will seem to someone that this is a good idea - just pay for regular touch-ups, but it isn't. keep tattooing the same patch regularly and it will be an inflexible scar in a couple of years or so. It hurt enough the first time too, thanks. The reason tattoos are permanent is because the ink is NOT safe for the body. The skin protects the body (organs, muscles etc) by holding the ink/pigment where it entered. Yeah, we don't want to use pigment that corrodes the skin and we don't want to use ink that's contaminated. But I like my tattoos to look good. I know they are not 'safe', I paid someone to break my skin and draw skulls, tits, devils, dragons an' shit. Sadly, in mainland Europe Shawn's scenario has began to be real. Certain brands of ink are blacklisted and approved brand's bottles must have batch numbers and expiry dates etc. An un-announced visit by the health board that discovers blacklisted ink can result in your shop being shut down. The brands are not blacklisted because they make shitty tattoos, nor because they are dangerous. Almost anyone reading this will have some of that ink in their skin. Personally, as a tattooer, I like the idea of a craftsman using tools and materials that are the result of another craftsman's passion, experience and expertise. Some of the highest quality materials in tattooing (ink, machines, grips, pens, power supplies etc.) are made by individuals or at least 'cottage industries'. I love being able to speak to the guy who made my equipment and buy it directly from him. Giving him/her feedback about it improves the product too. Demanding that your tattooer use government approved equipment will harm the end result. Not to mention inflate the price drastically. Lets not even get into the discussion of working across different states, countries or continents with 'approved' equipment. Jeez. I need to lighten up and post more one-liners.4 points -

Looks great, I'm excited. I was actually a little dissapointed that no one listed Freddy Corbin in their top 25, especially since influence on the industry of tattooing in general was a consideration on some of the lists. I'm glad to see he's getting his props in this new show. Here's a link to Scott's interview with Freddy in case anyone missed it: Freddy Corbin Video Interview with LST3 points

Seems to me like it's an online thing. Judging by what my producer friend says about the internet (he never shuts up about YouTube), I think that's a really good thing! I can't remember why, but it's great. Plus, it's good for us too, because we'll be able to watch it for free, and won't have to lend it to a friend who takes ages giving it back, haha.1 point

change in pain threshold
Scott R reacted to tattoojeff for a topic
I for one dont think that its age. over the years of tattooing people, and im sure many will agree that. it seems like when the biggest badest looking young buck comes for ink. alot of the times its a young healthy man. who turns out to be the biggest pain in the ass. needs a smoke break, then bathroom, then a drink of water etc. i remember after a session from hell that taxed a massive amount of extra time. i sat down with a clip board and pencil. trying to crack the code. so i could spot these people before hand. so the price will be right for the time. this was 20 years ago. i may have failed figuring that out. but i wrote a poem that most tattooers dig. its called tough customer, and i submitted it online to a contest and won a real nice plaque w/ silver engraved etc. TOUGH CUSTOMER This tough acting dude walks into my place, telling tall tails, like he was an ace. i want a tattoo, all black and real big. the small ones look wimpy, but the big ones i dig. I been every where, ive done every thing, when i come to town, all the bitches would cream. cuz im big and im burley, and talented too. but if you believe that. then you dont have a clue. cuz when he was finished,... the talkin part done. he flinched like a bitch, when i fired my gun. when he turned to look. his face was all geen. i laughed to myself, and thought oh yeah, you mean. his sweat was a flowing, his jockies were wet. he was singing the blues fo his home you can bet. but we made a deal. and the cash was up front. so when he weenied out. i told him real blunt. when you want a tattoo. you must be the man. grit your teeth or do what you can. but since you cant take it and act like you should. two quarter inch lines never paid so good. jeff etzel1 point -
Artist Uniforms
Mel Noir reacted to Hugh_Bastard for a topic
Ive known artists that worked in suits... kinda seems odd to me to risk splashing ink on a 300$ suit just to give off the impression that your shop is ultra professional....and there is the other problem... its unfortunate to see a holier-than-thou attitude come from wearing a certain vestment ... There is one shop in town that have kinda labelled themselves as a "calm spa like environment" for their customers, and they all wear hospital scrubs... the general consensus around town is that most of the older clientele appreciate it, but some more "traditional' clientele is alittle put off by it.... To each their own i suppose...1 point -
And regarding "safe" inks looking like shit and fading, I have some experience with this in relation to "permanent make-up." A lot of people think that the same pigments are used, but they're not the same, the molecules in cosmetic tattoo pigments make up larger molecules than traditional tattoo pigments. When cosmetic tattooing began, the pigments were designed and administered by doctors only, and they did take "safety" into account. The woman who tattooed on my eyebrows ($800) learned from a doctor as doctors were pushing to make it legal for "licensed" practitioners to do it, (licensed by them) because it was not proving to be profitable. (Weird? Who knew someone could make more money practicing medicine than tattooing?) Anyway, the larger, "safer" cosmetic tattoo molecules push themselves out of the skin, so even if you liked exactly what you had, it will be gone in 5 or so years. The lady who did my eyebrows was the best, and she included 3 free touch-ups BECAUSE the pigments almost always CHANGE COLOR in your skin. The taupe brown turned reddish orange in me, and now it's faded to look like the color of a faint scar. I didn't go back after my first touch up, fuck it, like Stewart said, "that shit hurt enough the first time." I'm cool drawing on my own eyebrows everyday, thanks. Hopefully, we all get tattoos that are superior to what we could draw on ourselves quickly each morning, we certainly don't want them changing colors and disappearing in a few years. (Or if you do, that's a whole 'nother issue.)1 point

Worst Tattoo You've Witnessed
MadeIndelible reacted to Mel Noir for a topic
Worst I know of is my ridiculously thick ex boyfriend. He actually had some really good linework on his arm for a sleeve until we broke up and he decided he didn't want to go back to my friend's studio (or pay him the money he owed him), but that's another story... The idiot, of course, is stupid enough to own a tattoo "kit", and decided to get the word "HOPELESS" on his knuckles. Trouble is, he got mixed up when he was doing it and ended up with "LESS HOPE". I really do know how to pick 'em.1 point -
i wonder how many times he's been stabbed in the face before he decided to get that tattoo.1 point

I'd like to know why there are at least 3 pictures of the dude being taken at the same time. Was there a line behind them with everyone in the ER getting there cameras ready? Oh and as far as a story, he is accident prone and this sorta thing happens to him monthly bases. After a few years he got that tattoo, still holds true... so far.1 point -
