  2. this is what i did.. san jose convention probably have one of the best line up of artists i have seen. i also e-mailed a bunch of the artists in SF and explained my situation and most of them were able to work something out.. but i also just walked in to black heart and got tattooed by scott 2 days later.. i had one appointment booked from before so i tried to get everything else booked around that.. i was a bit lucky and managed to get 3 artist in 3 days.. but after 3 full days in a row of getting tattoed i was pretty tired to say the least hehe but fuck it was worth it.. im going back early next year.. first Tempe then SF and then over to NY. trying to get all done in a month ore so. i think that u should get an appointment with someone u know have a long waiting list and then build your other appionments around that date. and if u can,try to get them close to the convention.. and as always at conventions u should come early first day and book the all the ones u want before u start getting tattoed. in SF u should probably stay in the mission district... close to most of the shops and the best bars and people.. :) which artists are u planning to get tattoos from?

  3. Tattoo flash painting isn't really painting even if you use a brush. It's "illustration colored with a brush". I mean people didn't even really consider Rockwell a painter. He was an illustrator and his paintings(illustrations) were far better than what 99.999999% of us are all putting out. Outside of flash, and flash style paintings I don't really do that stuff much anymore. I did it for years before I was a tattooer so I'm going the other way that a lot of people are going. I'm not branching into painting, I'm leaving it alone for more tattoo based illustrations. Weird.

  5. matt howse, at spider murphy's in san rafael, did this eagle and snake for me. i also really like this eagle and all seeing eye done by grez, which is not on me. valerie vargas, stizzo, chad koeplinger, theo mindell, matt howse, owen jensen, and norman keith collins do and did some of my faves!

  6. All rad tattoos Lochlan. I could be wrong but I think that Snodgrass tattoo is a Cthulhu. That Mike Wilson piece reminds me of the one below by Scott.

  7. more or less how i see it is that if you can draw it, you can tattoo it. i realize that's not 100% applicable, but it makes sense in my mind. as long as you have a good artist, there's no reason you won't be able to make that work. so get what you love. i think there's no reason to feel stuck because you're worried it won't work. i have no doubt there's someone out there who can make it happen. also, some shameless non-rose personal shares. my most recent and unfinished floral piece. jatropha and clerodendrums:

  8. Richard and Clay Decker are who I have to thank for what I know so far... And Bob Roberts, "it's not painting if it's not outlined with a brush", he told Richard when he was using a marker to use for some fine outlining stuff... We no longer use sharpies for paintings... Um...and I have been using Oil Colors and doing landscape paintings since I was 8 years old... My Uncle taught me he was amazing... I just recently started learning to use Water Color... Transferring images some use: graphite, others colored paper, I won't say what we have found to work best b/c that's us, everyone is different: graphite is harder to erase from paper, and you only have to lightly trace over with a ball point pen, but once it's down, it's down... I like colored tranfers, easier to correct, and they don't bleed...Saral Wax Free Transfer Paper - BLICK art materials As far as laying down outlines: some like speedballs, nibs, or quills, but we use brushes, and it's a learning process. Paints, try EVERYTHING it's fun, and no pressure like skin... but tubes are the way to go as you aren't writing down paint recipes for drops of dr.martins, or other liquids, they may dry out but you still have that one color you need to finish an old project you left on the table 4 months ago, and can't remember what you used to mix it... I can't get the knack of liquids still... I am a "watch your dap" and make sure your brush is lubed type, so water into liquid freaks me out... (still learning). Blick is the best for finding paper... Rolls are awesome, but we have been finding good deals on big sheets, and as far as blocks are concerned, I always keep a block around for Richard, Arches... Usually Clay has a dude that comes by the shop selling blocks at like 20.00 instead of the 60.oo they run at a chain store... So he's been stocking up and I buy em off him. We travel so much, guerilla paint sessions usually happen on a block. The last time I painted anything seriously it was helping out Richard with the signs at Spotlight... We painted until 30 mins prior to getting in a cab and heading to LAX to catch a flight, Steve stayed all nite to lend a hand too... It's still not done but attached are pics. Being around the Man, and Decker are really huge gifts, they have soo much talent, and know soo much, I'd be using tempera and being lame if it weren't for them.

    Favorite Restaurants!

we should totally start a post your blog section...we are in the middle of combining 3 of our blogs so i will post soon... i am not sure if there is a huge taste difference. to me fresh lemon juice always seems to freshen flavors...just like a little bit of salt brings out difference flavors. we have a lemon tree that is loaded so we tend to use lemons alot in our cooking... going to roast some artichoke hearts that i got from farmers market in some lemon juice, garlic, chili flakes, thyme right now.

Make sure your nose is clean! It's easy to become self-conscious when someone is staring up your nose.

  13. Here are some more religious/spiritual tattoo pictures I found recently: Freddy Corbin (Temple Tattoo)- Jesus Head with crown of thorns Derrick Snodgrass (Temple Tattoo)- Jesus with I think character from Pirates of The Caribbean head???? Freddy Corbin (Temple Tattoo)- Chest piece with praying hands, roses, script, banner Freddy Corbin (Temple Tattoo)- Rosary, check out the cross....so amazing! Heath Preheim (Temple Tattoo)- Cross with skull & crossbones, roses...something about this tattoo just sits with me really liking it and I can't pinpoint it.?????. Mike Wilson (Inksmith and Rogers Tattoo)- Skull Guadelupe....the robe she is wearing is radicool. I always enjoy when tattooers put their own spin on the robe of this popular tattoo to make it their own. Mike Wilson (Inksmith and Rogers Tattoo)- Sacred Heart

  15. Here's a list of people that I find waaaaaaaaaaaaay under rated. Clay McCay Lizzie Renaud Mike Bruce Josh Mcalear and motherfucking Dan Troccio. I know he had a TAM interview a while back and he's in New York, but I just feel like he gets slept on. He's a real low key guy, but honestly one of the best out there IMO. Get tattooed by everyone on this list and make the world a better place.

  16. i first saw peter lagergren's blog a few months ago, and i was blown away.....couldn't beleive i have never heard of someone that good until now. that backpiece on ben grillo looks crazy. i could mention a few people, one would be steve moore from vancouver, i know some west coasters already know about him, but out east anytime i show some my work from him, they have no idea who he is.....he keeps it low profile on the web and has only done a few articles. but if you get to check out his sketchbook and the photo book he carries around, it's insane. one of the best artists i have ever worked around, he did a few guest spots when aaron still worked with us. matt rinks and brady duncan are two other dudes who a lot of younger tattooers don't even realize that alot of shit they are copying are heavily influenced by stuff they were doing a whle ago. neither of them hae a while lot to do with computers, though. i used to work with this dude named jef mcgreevy a while back who could draw, paint, or tattoo almost anything, not even sure if he's still tattooing now. would have been really well known if he did a few more mag articles back then. he's been getting some press nowadays, but cory norris is a another artist that has been pushing it for a long time.

  17. im a huge rose fan, they are so full, so versatile and can change the mood of a piece by changing a few things while still looking like a rose. they also fit great in odd spaces and help solve so many cover up dilemmas. i never get sick of tattooing them. i love peonies and chrysanthemums also but never do many of them at all. i do prefer tattoos that have more traditional flowers in them.

  19. Im not sure how much exposure he has had but ~ Tom Moser - at Goldrush, wow is all I can say, all the pics of his work are insane but a few that stand out to me are the blue yellow and red cobra that goes from the guys waist line to his chest, tiger head on the guys hand, panther on the hand, and the tiger at the end on his portfolio. I looked at most of the other guys pics at gold rush and they are all incredible, looks like these dudes are top of the food chain.

  20. good points, i'm just too lazy and post all my pics from my iphone these days, as my camera gathers dust. on a side note, i see a lot of hacks making laughable tattoos watermarking their photos, as if anyone would want to steal them! these are the same guys who write on their websites "DO NOT STEAL OR COPY!" hahaha...and they suck!

  21. If I were you I would wait until the San Jose Convention. It is a good way to skip waiting lists, and you can throw in some tattooers from other parts of the country and world. I would not recommend this for bigger pieces, but it is a good for smaller to mid-size stuff. You should probably contact the artists you want in advance. Some will be doing appointments and some will be doing walk-ups.

  25. I am going to stick with the all seeing eye in the pyramid, the flaming torch, and palm tattoos of any kind. I know that some of you will say that those are so 2010, but I think that they will keep up their dominance through the first half of this year. Quotes from pretentious novels will dominate the fall and winter months.

  26. My biggest pet peeve is how everyone now specializes in tattooing because they have happened to see an episode of Miami Ink or LA Ink... I still have no idea what I am doing yet they do... Fuck it... I have seen an episode of Dr. 90210... Anyone want a nose job or a face lift... Just saying... I am now starting to hold consultations for breast augmentations...

  27. For me it's the 90lb 18yr old kid who wants this huge detailed tattoo down his ribs, I say, "Man thats a big tattoo for your first one, you sure you can hang"? I proceed to tell him that maybe he should get it somewhere more tolerable. He says, "Aww yea man, I aint no punk"! So I say, "Ok Skeeter, lets go". In the first 2 minutes he pours sweat to the point the stencil is almost gone, so I draw it back on, do a few more lines and he says, "Man I don't know....can I come back later to finish this outline"?
