Painful, swollen and irritated 6 month old tattoo

Hi all! 

Sorry about how gross it looks. 

I got this tattoo about 6 months ago from a mate who is an apprentice of over 12 months. 

The black in not too bad. I few blow outs. But the red shading is super painful.

What could it be?

Yeah - it could be a red ink reaction, and you'll find at least a couple of historical threads that dive into that subject. Nevertheless if it's painful even 2 weeks after it's applied I'd be having a doctor make sure there's no infection.
