ligatortat
Is there a minimum font size that artists will do in general for writing or a minimum size that wont look horrible later on? marley mission
just the idea of such a question tells me your already thinking too small though there are plenty of people that seek out microscript tattoos and plenty of people that get them i cant stand them actually when on a cruise this summer i saw more than my fair share of micromess be careful what you wish you for polliwog and bongsau 2 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129160 Share on other sites

marley mission
@ligatortat same difference - i mean - go find a tattooer and ask how small they will go since that appears to be what you want - you'll find someone that will give you a super small 'font' tattoo - and then after sometime you wont be able to tell what the hell it says - but hey - go for it Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129162 Share on other sites
oboogie
You can ask this on one of your old threads. You don't have to start a new thread for every single element of your tattoo. Thanks! marley mission
@ligatortat i thought you were going with the atom symbol idea? i actually like those designs you posted in another thread as for micro text - this guy does them almost exclusively it seems http://instagram.com/jonboytattoo i myself hate the trend - if it can be called that Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129165 Share on other sites
ligatortat
I did get the atom symbol and now im already looking to add to it by getting some text under it (wife has confirmed that tattooing is addicting)- just looked at the link and im not looking to go that small - probably between a 20-24 computer font with a 5pt letter spacing Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129166 Share on other sites
marley mission
@ligatortat post up that new tattoo as for the text - man i just hate the idea of small text just remember those lines thicken and you amy end up super bummed especially since you are new to tattoos and this is on your wrist anyway - do what you gotta do - but bigger is better and to me - image beats words anyday when it comes to tattoos i have some words on me but i'm just saying Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129167 Share on other sites
ligatortat
I decided to go basic at the top of the wrist (im a public school teacher) - under it i superimposed the text i want - just deciding on the font and size at this point Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129168 Share on other sites
Fala
Wouldn't it be more effective to create an image that calls to mind "we are all star stuff" vs an upside down phrase? Doesn't the atom imply that we are "star stuff"? Lettering in tattoos does not necessarily age well... I'm talking aging 10-20-30 years down the line not 3-5 years down. polliwog and oboogie 2 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129169 Share on other sites
ligatortat
I can see what you are saying - The "star stuff" phrase was used by Carl Sagan and I think its the best representation of who we are and how we connect to each other - What kind of image are you implying? I am an elementary school science teacher and I think the phrase in that kid looking font denotes that part of my life as well Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129170 Share on other sites

Fala
I don't have an image in mind, just asking if you can stretch from a tattooed phrase into something else. marley mission
@ligatortat i like the tattoo - i'd say no on the text for many reasons but primarily because to go to a size that would be sufficient to add to this piece would leave the text overshadowing the image - a big no-no imo and for gods sake - if you forgo this advice and do get text - please not upside down (so its for you) i think if you have the itch for more ink - get another tattoo ligatortat 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129176 Share on other sites
Graeme
You're approaching this all wrong. Instead of asking what's the minimum you can do to have an acceptable tattoo, maybe think about asking what you can do to get the best possible tattoo. Either way, it's on you for life, so you might as well go for the good option. marley mission, Fala, ligatortat and 2 others 5 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129178 Share on other sites

Also, it shouldn't be where you can read it—that's upside down (as someone else said). You'll cover this up eventually if you decide to do it. It really doesn't look right next to your atom. As for the tattoo, personally, I think words are lame. Pictures are symbols and they speak to people. Adding a "meaningful" quote to it just sucks all the mystery and flavour out from it. Its like getting a tattoo of a sick dragon and stamping a big "LUCKY" ontop of it. Also, every person I know who has gotten "kid font" tattoos or "my child's hand writting" tattoos have regretted it, and it just looks awful. The tattoo design itself should never take back seat to the "meaning". Keep that in mind. And dont get it upside down. Ducky15568
Here is an example of what everyone was attempting to convey. With the font thin like that, it would take away from the tattoo as a whole. Get a tattoo that looks like a tattoo, I remember someone saying that once. marley mission 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/7235-font-size/#findComment-129197 Share on other sites
