Healing a New Tattoo

I just got my first tattoo yesterday and have one part of the healing process that I am a bit confused about.  After getting my tattoo I asked the artist if I should make sure to not let the tattoo get hit directly by the shower head.  I was surprised when he told me that he did want me to let it take water directly from the shower head and asked him a second time just to make sure I heard him correctly because I was surprised by his answer.

He works at a VERY reputable shop but I will not be naming the shop since I am questioning his advice.  So far I've taken two showers since getting the tattoo and  it looks like it is healing great and on the quick side.

Should I continue to let the water hit it directly or should I discontinue that?

Washing your tattoo in the shower is fine. What you don't want to do is let it hit the tattoo for ages and ages once your scab forms, as you don't want to soak it off (same reason you wouldn't sit in the bath). But his advice is sound!

Welcome to the forum! I think the key is that you want water to run over it as you wash it to keep it clean...not blast away directly at it like a fire hose.

Listen to what your artist says about how to heal and care for the tattoo and follow his or her directions.  If you have any questions or concerns, follow up with him or her.  Soliciting advice about healing on the Internet is a terrible idea.
