Best military jackets you can get are from The Real McCoy's , Buzz Rickson and John Lofgren - all Japanese companies specialising in this stuff , super good and super pricey just depends on where you live and how much you are willing to spend .

Otherwise deadstock originals come up on e-bay from time to time although people are asking silly money now probably a lot less pricey if you are in the U.S .

The originals aren't going to fit like the one in the picture without taking them to a tailor. And, they really don't keep you very warm. Too many places for wind to get in. Almost as non-functional in today's world as a 13 button square fly, open v-neck shirt with a big flappy collar, or a white hat that doesn't keep the sun or rain off and won't stay on your head in sea breezes. Very functional 200 years ago, however!

I have a military wool coat similar to that, yet I manage to wear my collar down...

Got a totally legit one from Burlington Coat Factory years ago. Works fine if you're all layered up, I actually remember being surprised how warm it was when I first wore it out. (Although I was 25 and it was my first real 'winter' coat in probably 10 years..)

But seriously, you can go the Army-Navy/thrift store/ebay route. If you want the real deal, it's Sterlingwear, Schott, or Fidelity, which is what I have. (Not quilted on the inside which is good for Cali.) They come in suit sizes (i.e. 42, 40, etc.) -- very trim, no tailor necessary. Real Melton wool is very rough. J. Crew & Ralph Lauren make a more refined version, but pricier.
