Look for a program called Starting Strength, excellent for a beginner or intermediates. I'm still doing a full-body routine since my lifting is in the toilet right now. I have nothing to add regarding a vegeterian diet, I don't see how you'll get enough protein to help you out. I'm sure it can be done, you may have to dig for answers on that.

Regarding the vegetarian option I have a friend who at 53 is a bodybuilder and has carried enormous mass going that route,Andreas Cahling had a long professional bodybuilding career along with others such as Frank Mir -UFC heavyweight and not to forget Mike Tyson .

At 42, I am not trying to win any contests, but I do work out 5 days a week. Ive been doing it a long time, so I don't need to go extra hard nor extra heavy. I know what works for me, so I hate being offered unsolicited advice in the gym... anyway...

Most obvious question -how many grams of carbs are you having per day ?

I've always been the carb sensitive kind of guy, so I keep pretty low carbs even when I'm not doing contest prep. I honestly don't track my macros perfectly right now. I get them all set at the beginning of my prep, but they change depending on how I feel. I normally run pretty low, about 100-150g a day, all based around my workout. I do refeed days about once every 5 days of ~250g cho.

I also approach lifting on my own terms. Everyone's routine works for them and it probably won't work for anyone else. I very rarely give out any advice unless someone is about to hurt me doing something stupid close to me.

No offense, but going to a female vegan and asking for nutrition advice is a waste of time. Women rely on food for emotional support and very few understand how to put together a diet. If you are vegan, you do it for belief and not to live a healthier lifestyle, though many vegans will claim the latter.

And Andreas Cahling ate eggs; animal protein.

Ovo vegetarianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia They eat egs. But they arent vegan. The modern day with all the things with names :) Mac Danzig (MMA) is also vegan. Dont know what type.

Started a new cycle in deadlift after a rest week. Doing a 4RM and again taking 5% off. I was hungry and shaking, so my 5% was 10% :D Oh well... Also should have done press, but my shoulder muscle (or something in there) has been acting for a few weeks, so I skipped it. Dont feel nothing when doing deads, or when I rotate my arm. Certain upwards positions tighten it. Getting it checked on monday.

Just ran in my apartment in the 8th floor. Fuck me, Im out of shape. I was breathing like a idiot for 5 minutes. Then after 15minutes did 10 burpees. Then fuck it!

Had a Aikido camp this weekend. Great stuff! The teacher that we had is also a Rules of engagement teacher (I had to look it up what it is in English), so his aikido is soft, fast but oh so real life oriented!

edit. Hmmm. I guess the ROE isnt the correct term because he doesnt teach military, but guards etc.

The English wiki is a lot different than the finnish. In the english ROA they only speak about military, but in the finnish one also about police. And the police holds the trainings for people who want to teach the "Special forcible means" :) That is the term from finnish police website. I guess they just directly translated from finnish to english :P

So, I have no idea what the correct term is!

I would ask out of curiosity only, no way I'd give up my place on the food chain at this point.

You might be talking about SWAT or something similar. I understand what you're saying.

Cheers to that.

I post regularly on a bodybuilding website on my training with video and pic updates. I just did a good update today, and instead of copying and pasting, I'll just share the link out of ease.

Use of force / defensive tactics, I wonder?

Found this nifty piece on Ted Arcidi , although known as a bench specialist Arcidi was built like a mountain gorilla and had tremendous all round strength .This may be of assistance (wink) to guys trying to translate poundages from supplementary exercises to their main lifts.

added another 5kg to my bench, gonna see if i can keep up the 5kg a week weight raise

Congrats, but manage your expectations on that. That is a very sizable jump; most of us would be ecstatic to add 30 pounds to our bench in a year. Having said that, go attack those weights!

Sorry to be an old stick in the mud but at your stage its better to get familiar with a weight by repping with perfect form ,reps build muscle not 1 rep max's .Nothing kills motivation like missing lifts , always try to tighten everything up and move the weight better /stricter ,once you've completely dominated that weight then look to slap on poundage .Unrelated but I recently watched "so you think you can squat " by elite FTS on Youtube and think it should be made compulsory viewing .

@kylegrey I should have mentioned I'm not 1 rep maxing. I only go up if i can get around 8 reps with good form in. And so far i can add 5kg a week to my bench. Not getting up next week again though cause i struggled on my 7th rep on 55kg. O and i dont think i can squat. I've been told to avoid squats and deadlifts since my spine is messed up (it has a nice "s" shape to it. The presser of the barbell on my spine while squating could result in serious back injuries so I have to use legpress machines. Not ideal but it works

I have neck issues.. no squatting for me right now, when I was into it, I'd pad the bar with a length of "pool noodle". These are toys for swimming pools made of foam and have a hollow center. Just whack a few feet off one, slit it down the middle and it goes right over the bar.

  • 2 weeks later...

My legs were tight as hell for months and months. Quite the difference when your legs are better. I usually dont do that much leg presses, but I had old logs so I decided to try it, just to compare. Log from 28/11/2011 (when my legs were tight as fuck on the sides etc) I did 3sets with 4 reps with 150kg/330 lbs and it was like hell. Now that my legs are better and I havent done any leg training in a while (besides deadlifting, but I do normal, not stiff legs, so dont know if that would do anything.) I did yesterday 220kg/484 lbs 6 sets/4 reps. Then run to the 5th floor.

Not saying that it something amazing, just pointing out how much the leg muscles being tight as hell factor.

But I did like the leg pressing and will do it alongside the zercher squat as I feel I like to. Here is a good article

T NATION | Is the Leg Press Worthless?

And as Jim Wendler talked that how people knock guys who leg press, well, you put 800lbs on it, you are not weak.Of course if you can squat 800lbs, fuck me...

Its great for bodybuilders wanting hypertrophy provided you do higher reps ,15 plus and deep .Its not a heavy weight /low rep deal its heavy weight /high reps done in a constant tension style i.e. no lock out and is suited to high intensity stuff - strip sets etc . Look at how pros legs changed in the 90's cause most everyone abandoned squats ,everyone was walking around like Quadzilla but also a lot of people had turnip thighs that were huge but looked like shit .

I agree. But I have wondered about that. Squat is of course optimal to strenght etc. but is it because they compare squatting to leg pressing they say leg press isnt suited for strenght?I mean, if you have a leg prrss and dont squat, and leg press in order to gain strenght and start doing 200pounds as 1RM. And in 6 months you do 400pounds in leg press as 1RM, then you are stronger. Right. Of course if you were squatting you might have done 500, but still.
