today ,I got to listen to one of the people I work with tell his clientel that he thought the show would help the public understand what good and bad tattoos were....ha..ha. like his flash copies are comparable to the very qualified tattooers towards the end.

So i guess doing shitty money bags makes you a good artist... I mean I left bankhead hwy. (atl) for a reason. I thought that it was funny how he referred to tattoo artist being like rockstars... I guess thats why the show kind of annoyed me. Loose the fucking ego's!!!! but if tattooist are like rockstars, then consider me abba.

Second post for me. Can't start another thread yet. I really liked the show. Yes, it was hokey and the drama was dumb and they didn't show much of the actual artwork being done...but holy hell does it have me motivated to get another tattoo. I would love to get something elaborate like the stuff they did, but I'm a little concerned because some of the work on the show was just crap. I am no tattoo expert, but even I could tell that some of those guys were not great. And if those artists are supposed to be some of the best in the business, what kind of quality can I expect from my local shop? Just like every "reality" competition show, I'm sure follow-on season will have better talent.

Since I can't start my own thread yet, can anyone recommend a good shop in the San Diego/North County area?

You will find all the recommendations that people have suggested and maybe a few more.

From the article preview:

Okay, Dave Navarro! Why is Dave Navarro on the show? What does he have to do with it? Well, it’s a TV game show… You need a host and usually they wanna’ celebrity host, right? So who to choose? I think Dave is an awesome choice, coulda been some lame-ass Joe Rogan type, some pinup/porn chick or who knows what else?!

Heck, at least Joe Rogan is funny, doesn't take himself too seriously, and has some actual nice ink (although I haven't gotten a good look at it, it appears nice from a distance). IMHO, YMMV, etc...

TAM has also let me down by running full page ads for Dink Master. The name of the game here for everyone involved whether its a judge or a tattooer or a 'canvas' seems to be money>integrity.

Yeah I read Oliver's rationalization of being involved but hey I still reserve the right to my opinion and I still say suck it to the people involved. Color me a hater.

Oliver does make a point about Navarro. I mean for example Joe Rogan getting a sleeve by one guy is essentially getting one tattoo. Basically your scope of knowledge about tattooing would be limited to the one shop and one tattooer who tattooed you. Even if Navarro's tattoo design choices aren't in line with what I would get, spending 20 years getting tattooed by guys like Roberts, Negrete, and Mahoney among others makes a solid case for being a non tattooer judge. But if the question was who do you want to do smoke a bowl with and hit the Vegas strip with, I would say Rogan wins that one every time.

I don't know if I think these shows are "good for tattooing", but I can only imagine how bad they would be without guys like Hendricks and Peck. Would it be better to have people who are "the problem with tattooing" be the only representation of it to the public. I don't really expect too much from anything that airs on cable television before ultimate fight night and after some storage locker show.

I don't know how many times I've gone somewhere, and someone I don't know came up to me, grabs my arm, and says "I really like your sleeve." I think the criticisms are right, because it makes people think it is ok to just talk about it to people you don't even know. I almost got into a fist fight over it once because some dude came up, grabbed my arm, and was like "Sick tats bro." FUCK.

What is the greater good? Ok, a more educated public can be a good thing. But this is the same educated public who votes for people like Rick Santorum in primary elections. I know tattooing isn't "mine," but I still like to believe it is a little sacred. I like the idea that I know a little about something that other people do not. But, these shows are like when The Clash signed to a major label.

But, I digress...HATERS GONNA HATE.

He brings up a good point about signing up to get a tattoo for an "inkmaster" and ending up with someone like B Tat tattooing you, but on the flip side people too cheap to pay for a good tattoo get what they deserve. Sounds like his assessment of how the show would work out was pretty spot on and to not get paid for that wouldn't make any sense. I still think there is such a thing as a well rounded tattooer, but not sure a show is the place to prove that, but I actually like the idea seeing guys that have weird realistic styles that I would never get tattooed on me do stuff that looks more like what I would prefer in a tattoo.

I enjoyed the show, watched the first episode of Best Ink and its exactly the same show, but with better artists and the well scary Joe Capobianco

I caught the first episode of Best Ink as well and yeah it's the same show. I don't know about better artists , but I didn't see anyone of B tat or Al Fliction caliber so to some degree I would agree. Who is that girl that hosts that show, with the horrible lettering tattoo on her shoulder?

That presenter is one of the most annoying persons I have ever seen on telly.

I remember when I was doing my first tattoos early in my apprenticeship, Joe was looking over my shoulder. He and my mentor are friends. I can say this -- he's definitely a competent and vocal judge of tattoos and the people doing them. He knows his stuff in an objective sense.

I am bummed to see him tied to this show. I personally find it unwatchable but they've obviously chosen people based on their appeal to the reality/drama crowd.

They all say the same thing..."I've been tattooing for 2 years, it just kinda fell into my lap." right, so you've been tattooing since it blew up and someone with more love for money than tattooing gave you an "apprenticeship". If you've been tattooing for 2 years, stop chasing a camera and do the job. There's a toilet that needs to be cleaned, a floor to be vacuumed and those roses and finger waves aren't going to draw themselves. Perfect your craft. These people don't give a shit about being *good* at tattooing, they want to be *known* for tattooing. Best...pssh.
