polliwog
I don't see what makes such a broad array of tattoos "hipster" other than that they're apparently all on young, conventionally attractive people with some sort of Instagram filter applied. - - - Updated - - - Though I'm pretty sure the dude with the giant thigh eagle doesn't look like a hipster. gougetheeyes, irezumi and Graeme 3 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/1330-dumb-hipster-tattoos/?page=22#findComment-87740 Share on other sites

Teamwilson
I am shocked at the stupidity and utter lack of thought by these people. polliwog
I was struggling to articulate what was bothering me about the hipster tattoos tumblr earlier, but I think I've figured it out. Of course you shouldn't always make assumptions about someone's motivation for getting tattooed from looking at a picture. Cumulatively, though, sites like the one linked above create or maybe just feed a perception that sex appeal should be paramount for young women who get tattooed, or that getting tattooed is chiefly a way to enhance it, above all else. It's like thigh tattoos, even the most beautiful ones, only exist in tumblr-land to set off the thigh's slimness and unblemished (white) skin. I'm trying to get over some sort of bullshit that's somehow lodged in my brain that says that women like me don't get certain kinds of tattoos in certain places - like our lumpy thighs - lest we draw even more attention to our bodies. I've spent my whole life trying avoid that kind of appraisal. Anyway. We're all going to have faded thigh tattoos surrounded by veins in 50 years anyway, whether we started out as tumblr-worthy sylphs or not, so fuck it. gougetheeyes, Zillah, SerenityViolet and 1 other 4 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/1330-dumb-hipster-tattoos/?page=22#findComment-87890 Share on other sites

Can I just like this specific part a googol times? I mean, I've always loved the look of tattoos, but being a fat girl used to think they'd be a waste on me. It was like, putting art on an ugly canvas was disrespect to the art. But that kind of self-loathing that I've gotten past is now turning into a tattoo design. Synesthesia
^ I agree, I hate how fetishized tattoos are. Not even just on women, probably half the pictures of guys with tattoos are the smoldering model types. Most of the time when I try to google certain designs, I feel like I'm looking at soft-core porn. I've always thought tattoos are more for the individual getting them (not in the upside-down "IT'S FOR ME!" way ), but this hyper sexual stance on tattoos makes it seem like you get them to get ogled by strangers. I feel more beautiful with mine, I don't need to dress like a porn star to express that. jetwash
^Couldn't agree more with that sentiment. Sometimes friends will mention that I don't get my tattoos out that much, or show them off, it's hard to explain that I didn't get them for other people to look at. By the same token it's an odd feeling to have artwork on my own body that I'm aware of, but not focused on most of the time. It does make me feel good, I know that :) SeeSea 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/1330-dumb-hipster-tattoos/?page=22#findComment-87957 Share on other sites
Tesseracts
I'm going to play devil's advocate here, I don't have a problem with this blog. I sometimes enjoy seeing model-types with tattoos, even if there is too much focus on the model's body and not enough on the tattoo. I think tattoos need to be seen on the body in order to be fully appreciated, and it's nice to see good quality photographs that actually put the tattoo in it's context. I see too many photos on the internet of great tattoos photographed super close up with and illuminated by the flash of a cell phone camera. I'm not interested in tattoos for the purpose of looking sexy either but I'm not going to judge other people's motivations for getting a tattoo or liking one. If they think it's just a decoration for their thigh, that's fine, as long as the tattoo itself doesn't look horrible. I've been an overweight female my whole life and I'm not a stranger to insecurity, but at this point in my life I can look at skinny photoshopped people without thinking I'm supposed to look exactly like them. It's funny - I don't disagree with you, but when I saw those thigh tattoos I was mesmerized. I had two thoughts - 1) I wish I was a lot younger so I could get a tattoo like that that looked so awesome on young perfect white thigh skin (although I didn't have those legs when I was 20!), and 2) maybe these tattoos are keeping these young kids out of the sun and there will be a lot less skin cancer! So odd that skin cancer popped immediately to my head as an advantage. Gettin' old I guess. polliwog
Hipsters don't really tan. Fala
I'm sitting here looking through the Fuck Yeah! Hipster Tattoos tumblr, and ask (my husband) why so many people get tattoos of trees on their arms, and also remarking that I saw a girl on the subway with "Agape" tattooed, upside down, in script, on her wrist today (it took me several minutes to figure out what word was tattooed on her wrist, it was super odd looking.) My husband comes over, looks at the computer screen, and says, "well, because they (the trees) fit the space really well. Why do you have two fish with fangs on your thigh?" Touche. Fala
In all fairness, I did say "people" not "hipster" ;) I know quite a few people recently who have talked about getting a tree tattooed somewhere - I find the correlation between the subject matter and us a society spending less time in nature (and destroying it) yet demanding personal growth and upward movement to be very interesting. polliwog 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/t/1330-dumb-hipster-tattoos/?page=22#findComment-88183 Share on other sites

PinkUnicorn
Isn't this criticism of other people's tattoos on a tattoo forum - because they aren't what some consider to be "proper" tattoos - something of a "no true Scotsman" type argument? No true Scotsman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I'd say it is, but there's also the criticism of tattoos that are just not very good tattoos. I still make the argument that good tattoos look like tattoos sometimes, though, because it is just what I think tattoos look like. Obviously a lot of other people are going to think otherwise, but as @slayer9019 put it, people are wrong! 10PieceNuggets
I dont get whats wrong with "model" type tattoos. Tattoos are art. Art is made to be appreciated, and theres nothing wrong with showing off your tattoos, or even being "commercialized". I feel its the older clientele that make this a big deal, somewhat an elitist point of view at times I might add.
