on the hunt for a cute dress

alright, alright, i know i might get some slack for this, but at this point i'm feeling kind of desperate. so ladies (or men who are knowledgeable on women's fashion), have any suggestions on where to find a cute dress? nye is the 2 year dating anniversary (yes, we're 16) for Jackson and i. i know it's not a huge deal, but it's an excuse for us to celebrate, go on an actual date (we have really different schedules, so our dates tend to be cuddling and watching a movie at 10pm), and enjoy so

SF Tattoo Convention of the Arts 2010, My recap!

Well, first off I would like to preface this by saying two words: THANK YOU. To Taki, JIll, Colin, and the rest of the crew at S. O. G. , thanks for having us out, it was my first time as an actual participant, and I was stoked to be a part of such an event. It was like being in a room with all the people you have heard, read, seen in print, but never in person... I knew names, not faces, and I know peoples work but again, I am not so great with names... But it was cool to see all the talent in

First Blog

It's 7 in the morning. I can't sleep. It's a sunday and I've worked 24 hours of the last 48 with little to no sleep at all. I think it's time to hit the whiskey and hang out with the pitbulls. At least it was a productive weekend. I did my first collaboration on the shop manager/apprentice friday night. We started at 9pm and ended at 4 in the morning. Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we partied our ass off during this tattoo. Its okay though because it's fun to kick back and tattoo a tattooer wit

Literary Tattoos, pt. 1, Cormac McCarthy

There's been a little bit of discussion on song lyric tattoos from a post on Ms.Rad's blog (here:http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/tattooforum/entries/19-song-lyric-tattoos) and I mentioned something about literature-themed tattoos. So I thought I'd share. After pulling out a few books, I realized I'd marked up so many pages that I'd have to do this in parts; Part 1 is all Cormac McCarthy who is, in my opinion, one of the greatest writers of the 20th/21st century and possibly one of the greatest

Halloween Tattoo Flash or Flesh

I know for us in the Bay Area for awhile Freddy Corbin and other tattooers at his shop Tattoo 13 in Oakland on Friday the Thirteenths would have tattoos for $13 that you could choose from flash the tattooers made. I know many other shops elsewhere now do this as well, does anyone by chance have the history/tales on this? Anywho, this has now taken a new spin around here, SF Bay Area, over the years and there are Valentines Day tattoo and Halloween tattoo specials at various shops. So last nigh

Josh Arment Interview by Cody Miller part 1 of 2

I am not really sure when I first actually met Josh Arment, but we went on a very memorable journey right before my daughter was born. He had arranged for us to go shark diving with great white sharks off the Mexico coast at Guadeloupe Islands. There were seven or eight tattooers on a boat for five days with some really, really big sharks. One of the highlights for me was when I got to high-five a 16 foot great white shark, it was pretty awesome. Unfortunately for Josh, he shared a room with a s

Hanky Panky's awesome new book

ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR THE ART AND HISTORY OF TATTOOING BY HENK SCHIFFMACHER, AKA HANKY PANKY I believe my first true encounter with Henk was at the last Amsterdam convention in 96. I had met him before, but never got the full experience. I had flown to Europe with Jeff Rassier, it was my first trip there and I was stoked. We got to our hotel, threw our shit in the room and headed straight to Henk's shop. The red light district was full of dirt bag tattooers roaming about, lurking on the hooker

Eye Candy: Urban Ink's Pinups Archive

I'm a huge fan of Urban Ink -- I don't know the people behind the magazine, but they always have the hottest pinups. I was just about to do a writeup on the new photo book -- Howard Huang's Urban Girls (it's amazing) and I got sidetracked in the complete Urban Ink pinups archive and thought I'd share the link here with the community because it's not that easy to find. So hot. (Link is not safe for viewing at work if you have a "normal" job.)

Finding more time

I've always used most of my spare time for work. I like to go out here and there and unwind a bit but mostly I like to sit home and get prepared for work. But I always get frustrated that I never really could catch up to the point where I can work on artwork for myself. Well I started cracking down the past week, drawing for appointments after work, going to bed early and waking up early and using my morning time to actually paint, and it is fucking awesome! I'm not a morning person at all, I'm

Tattoo Party @ Speakeasy today!

Today we close our doors for our 2nd annual staff tattoo party. We fill our fridge with healthy, water heavy foods, beer, ciders, and other tasty drinks, order a whack of Indian food, lock our doors, and hang out all day making tattoos on each other. The rule of anyone attending is you have to tattoo at least once, and be tattooed at least once. Last year was a lot of fun and this year should be the same. Despite the fact that we often stick around and just tattoo each other like this, it's

My 3 most hated tattoo requests of the moment

...mostly because the fads are growing so thin I can't take it: 1. OWLS jesus christ stop asking me for owls. Go to urban outfitters and get your fix, PLEASE. 2. Animals with flipped up brims. GUH 3. The same as it's been for years. Trees. SO hard to make fun or interesting or different if you do like 10 every year! Alright. Phewph. Let's hope another one doesn't come through the door the minute I hit "post now."

this week has been a weird one

and this weekend will be busy as hell. so far this week: - witnessed a meltdown at a curatorial committee meeting - was rear ended on my way to work (both me and my car are ok, i'll end up with a free, brand new rear axel and bumper) - overheard another meeting where i was suggested to be THE curator for the bod mod exhibit (we'll see what happens) - being brought on a non-work related secret project with someone who i admire - feeling exhausted still from my trip, school, and life in gene

Shadowed In A Tourist Town

Living in a tourist town has had more disadvantages as an artist, and trying to be noticed. I have lived in the Panhandle of Florida for about 14 years, and having been tattooing for about 8. When you think of tourist towns , you think of terrible chop shops and insane tattoo prices. Well most of this is true, but not entirely. I work at Black Cat Tattoo, in PCB. we have always had a strong crew and put out clean original work. We have tourists who want flash, but we still pretty much draw ever

Pinky Yun - My Freehand Dragon Tattoo and other musings

I turned 18 in 1988 and got 6 tattoos that year. I was like a junkie who got hooked on the first taste and as we used to say back then about a lot of things... one is too many and a thousand never enough. Somehow by fate I ended up at Pinky Yun's Dragon Tattoo in San Jose for all but one of them. I wish I knew how I first ended up there, but memory fails me on so many levels. I had no idea what direction my tattoos were going back then, knew nothing of different styles or that you could even ask

Frustrations of a youngin'.

So many things about trying to come up in this business are so frustrating. Getting chops up without help or guidance, trying to make connections, trying to build a clientele of some sort. I'm getting so frustrated and feeling like all the hours I put into this are for nothing. I love what I do. I gave up so much for it. But days like today I just want to throw in the fucking towel. I'm only 4 years in... so I can see that I am where I am supposed to be. But fuck, I get so discouraged. Not with

art art art

this site makes me want to get back into making art hardcore. i need a push to stop being lazy (and to clean/finish unpacking/organize my room) and to start actually making a game plan to do things again, so i'm hoping this blog post will do that. i have a few ideas already in the works, and i'm going to lay them all out here so i do not forget (and maybe someone will push me forward): - (work in progress) a series of portraits of people who have inspired me (family, artists, theorists, histo

Celebrity Tattoos

I concur... We as tattooers should make some things sacred again... If that phrase was not coined and spread to non tattooers we'd still be doing piece of cake areas rather than a psalm/small novel in 1/4 inch script over stretch marks... Our actions create the shit we deal with... If someone doesn't tattoo they should not be in on anything about our business... As we have already created a shit storm...
